Yes to laying down a straight laced basis of a tune before you go crazy on the changes. You have all the choruses you can handle to blow but please present the tune the composer laid out. At any tempo, let me hear the song as it was written, then show me your creations over the framework of the song.
Perhaps you’re like me and have loved this tune forever, believing that it’s a great vehicle for improvisation. Perhaps you’ve heard Ella, ‘Trane, Bergonzi, Flanagan, ……… perhaps you walk about, singing the tune in a variety of ways, with a variety of nuances both rhythmic and melodic. Perhaps you’re like me and can’t ignore the distractions of those who can’t but help to say stupid/vacuous bullshit, thinking they’re somehow adding value to the discourse. Collectively we need to raise our game, don’t bring-in the worthlessness’s of the consumer capitalist man-made zeitgeist. Should that have any value-added substantive thing to it at all ….is even doubtful.
Thank you for posting Hey, Open Up!. I transcribed it around 30 years ago, and a couple of times since I can't manage to hang on to my transcriptions. It's always been one of my favorites.
Thank you for posting these videos. They are very useful. I’ve had your DVD about triads for some time and plan to buy your books. I hope we get the opportunity to improvise together sometime. Be well and keep inspiring us!
