My name is Mary and I'm a content creator here on RU-vid and a Twitch broadcaster. On this channel I will focus on reaction to movies and tv series I've never seen before!
I hope you enjoy the ride together, through all these amazing new experiences!
Yes, everyone already knows they are prisoners, or at least they heavily suspect it, so they don't want to test it because of the possible consequences. But even though everyone implicitly knows, so far Ishido had a plausible response to give if anyone suggested otherwise "No one is a prisoner here, everyone is free to leave if they follow the norms of the city". and no one can say that isn't true, because no one has been willing to test it. The one regent who opposed him on a meeting ended up being murdered by "bandits", which sent a clear message. So there had to be one person who was willing to test it out in the open, in front of everyone, to make it impossible to deny. When Mariko did it, Ishido had to concede in the last moment, because letting her die would be admitting she is a prisoner. But he couldn't let her leave either, so he tried to have her kidnapped. That way she couldn't leave but also wouldn't die. He did that because if she died the night before leaving, everyone would suspect it was Ishido's doing, even if they couldn't prove it. But if she lived, then Ishido did nothing wrong on paper: he gave her a permit to leave, and she isn't dead. Mariko knew that, and when they came for her and it was obvious Ishido wouldn't let the prisoners leave, she knew she had to die during the attack, so that the right people would blame Ishido for her death.
Mariko's character is one of the bravest ever. Her death was devastating. When you mentioned the plans for 2nd and 3rd seasons, I didn't say anything because of this. The only way to have another season with Mariko, is if there is a prequel. How can you have Shogun without Anna Sawai?
I really appreciate your commentary. I read the book in the 70s and watched the 1980 series, watched this series twice and reread the book recently but your insights have added to it for me. I'm going to rewatch this series. It's that good.
"Hell is no place I haven't already known, let it from your mind" .... what a fuggin great line. Anna Sawai gave an outstanding performance in this show. This show is a poem from start to end, beautiful.
3:33 "Ajin-Dono" Dono translates to "Lord" or "Master". In the case of "Mariko-Dono" in 5:58, that translates to Lady Mariko. "Sama" is an honorific for an esteemed person. Saying Ishido-Sama is like saying "the honorable Ishido" or "the esteemed Ishido". "San" is an every replacement for Mr. and Ms. San is followed by some ones last name. San can also be used for animals. It's common to say uma-san (horse), ushi-san (cow), zou-san (elephant), etc., particularly when talking to children.
the Shinobi were there to capture Mariko, because Ishido could not let her to die or be killed without disgracing himself, so the plan was to capture her and contain her for the time till Toronaga would have to come to surrender. It is not very clear in the series and better explained in the book.
Yes he is but he's not a cartoon, a one dimensional brute. He is angry and cruel but he also in his own way loves Mariko but he can't understand why she won't love him because he saved her from death and gave her what he considers a good life so he lashes out in frustration. He is a talented and loyal warrior but he lacks any introspection on Mariko's motives.
Unless you are being sarcastic the shinobi weren't trying to kill Mariko they were trying to capture her. Ishido couldn't outright kill her as all the noble families would revolt. They couldn't let her go as all the other hostages would demand to leave so he chose a middle road; have her kidnapped by "bandits" so she is alive but sidelined bringing the other hostages to heel.
So much is beautiful because it is transient, exclusive, or limited in quantity: life, emotions, friendships, etc. We all know this. But the Japanese of the show's time took it to such lengths. Mariko has to take off her cross (set aside her commitment to her faith), nearly die by her own hand, before she loosens up enough to make love with John again. Their final night is a safe space for everyone watching the story to breathe, before it takes a final plunge. We're all wanting these two to make it and retire to a home together. But flowers are only flowers when they fall...
8:04 - "Is there a remake of The Thing? Not that I'm gonna watch that, because one was enough " - The movie you watched is the "remake" that they're referring to. It's not really a remake though. The Thing is based on a scifi story called Who Goes There. This story was first adapted into a movie in 1961, called The Thing from Another World. It omitted the shape-shifting, and infection aspects of the story and made the creature a conventional, humanoid alien. John Carpenter's The Thing is a more faithful adaption of the original story, although many people call it a remake. 11:11 - "Is Return to Oz something to do with Wizard of Oz?" - Yes, it's a long belated sequel to that movie, following a young Dorothy going back to Oz. 12:13 - "Is a silencer that silent?" - In real life, no.They can reduce the amount of noise a gun makes, but only in fiction is it that quiet.
Hello Mary, I started watching Stranger Things on RU-vid to see reactions of other people and it’s like watching it with friends. I was going to request a couple of Movies to react to. I don’t know if you’ve seen them and I just missed it? They’re oldies! With James Stewart 1. Shop Around the Corner 2. Mr. Smith goes to Washington 3. Harvey 4. You Can’t Take it With You These are my favorites; they’re heartwarming and funny! My name is Ann from Illinois. I’m older and love Stranger Things! My 19yr old daughter thinks it’s weird. I love watching the reactions with other fans that match my energy. I came across yours cuz it was a new face. Anyway, I hope you decide to watch those movies! I’m curious to know what your native language is. 😊
Loved your reaction to this episode!💜 The Netherlands is very much of celebrating all holidays or national celebrations..(I live in California now)Belgium is more on the “quite” side when it comes to celebrations! I don’t know if you speak the language? Maar leuk om te horen dat je in België woont!❤️🔥
The pistol shot was covered by the noise of the fair, and more importantly, the popping balloons. This time period in this location, even if you heard it clearly, your first thought would have been "balloon", not "gun".
I grew up in the 70s and 80s and you need to understand that it was a time when gays (and others) had a MUCH more difficult time of it if they came out of the closet. Except amongst the theater kids. lol. I had a friend in high school who was unapologetically OUT...but he was definitely the exception to the rule.
Anyone remember when we had a strong dislike for Steve? He's come a long way since Season 1. Steve setting up his confession and then handling the realization that Robin is into girls was beautiful, if unlikely, for guys living in that time. Plenty of entitlement and rampant sexism going around. That Steve is not hurt, not even slightly resentful... that's growth (and I wish we had that in the '80s). Then again, facing the dangers of the Upside Down and Soviet agents does tend to change a man.
I really hope you do a reaction to Return To Oz. Yes, it’s a sequel to Wizard Of Oz but it sticks to the original book more accurately so it’s on the darker side. Not scary but has some creepy moments similar to The Neverending Story. From the same era of film making.
The Gravitron, that spinning flying saucer ride is fun. The centrifugal force pins you against the wall, and you can like, sit on the wall. I get too anxious and motion sick these days to handle it, but I'm glad when I was a little more thrill seeking when I was 12, I rode that ride.
There are 3 versions of The Thing. There was one made in the 50's. The 80's one aka the one everyone knows and loves, is a remake of it... and I think a more recent one was technically part sequel or prequel. I didn't watch it. I knew it'd be CGI.
Well the carnival is super loud and he fired it at the same time as a baloon pop so normally you would definitely still hear a silent gun in a normal or quiet room
As someone who grew up in the 80's .. we had no idea how common being gay is. We thought it was just a few weird people here and there. Discovering someone you knew was into same sex? It was literally unthinkable. We didn't get it and knew nothing. I'm glad we understand the world better these days. Well.. a lot of us know better anyway. So much of the world still cling to living in darkness.
To answer your question: Personally I enjoy the “Gravitron” ride they went on, but results may vary. As long as you don’t turn your head, it shouldn’t make you dizzy… You just feel super heavy and can barely move. (Turning your head would likely make it snap to the side quickly, which might not be good depending how easily you get dizzy, but the apparent extra “gravity” from the centripetal force prevents your inner ear from sloshing much, so personally I found it minimizes any dizziness you might expect from spinning. The cool thing is that your perception of the room changes…. You feel like it’s tilting with you on the bottom looking to at the “top”, which is still just the other side, and the ride remains horizontal the whole time (it does NOT tilt). I just looked it up on the internet… apparently the Gravitron causes about 3Gs of force, so you weigh 3x your normal weight in the direction toward your back. Apparently that’s almost as much as when going up in an actual rocket. Great reaction as always!
No, sound suppressors are not that quiet. While there are many factors that go into it, a pistol suppressor with subsonic ammo would still likely produce about 120+ dB of noise - louder than a car horn.
