A useful comparison, but there are actually no reliable width fitting standards in the UK, which is extremely inconvenient for me and my very slender feet. I have just purchased Crockett & Jones suede boots in a 'D' fitting and found they were narrower than numerous old pairs of Church's leather shoes, all made to what I understood was my preferred and accurate 'C', which is incredibly hard to find anyware these days. There is unfortunately no substitute for trying on new shoes in a shop, especially at exorbitant modern prices.
According to Loake and Barker, medium width in UK is F (G is wide and E is narrow). In the US, medium width is D. This whole width conversion system is incredibly annoying. Brannock devices are all in US standards, since it originated from Syracuse, NY. Please do correct me if you think I'm wrong, but do provide some reference for your correction. I appreciate the OP for his efforts.
I agree. The Brits and Europeans seem to confuse this whole shoe sizing question instead of adopting the simple and strait forward North American system. Not to mention driving on the wrong side of the road in Britain! LOL.
Hello sir, I wonder what size did you go for on those black cap toe Alden 2146 shoes since they are on aberdeen last, and how would you compare em to Alden 975 in barrie last.
awesome video! full of great info. thanks to you i just realized that my RL loafers are made by crocket and jones so i guess i own a pair of C&J and didn't even realize!
Thanks for the video. Am i to understand that RL/polo branded Crockett and Jones boot/shoes are labeled inside with usa sizing? I.e. a RL uk made boot would be labled 10.5 but would actually be 9.5 uk sizing. Thanks
Your deer bone is so smooth compared to mine. I was wondering if I should sand and polish it. Oh I can see the jokes already. Mind in the gutter you bums!
what a great video thanks for all the information, i wear Crockett and jones size 6.5 uk 7.5 us E last 325 just like the last you have and im looking to buy my first Allen edmonds shoes unfortunately i don't have any close store or even in my country what shoe size you think i should buy from Allen edmonds?. thanks
Thank you for the video. Common teaching about shell cordovan care is to avoid using water at all costs. Rather than removing the newly-leaching natural fats, oils and waxes with a damp cloth, simply brush the blooming areas with the horse hair brush to redistribute and nourish the surrounding shell. Don’t remove this natural component of your shell. By doing so you are contrary to one of the very attributes which distinguishes shell from calf in the first place.
Thank you for the awesome video! Can you provide the sizes of your shoes? Specifically for the Allen Edmonds MacNeils, Alden 975s, and the C&J Pembrokes. I am in the process of purchasing some C&J Pembrokes in Whiskey Shell and I want to make sure I am getting the sizing right. For instance, I normally wear US 9D for all of my Allen Edmonds shoes, meanwhile I’ve had to size down a half size for the Alden Barrie last as recommended by Alden. I also own some Peal & Co. x C&J shoes made on the 240 last, and I had to size down to a US 8.5D to make that shoe have the better fitment because the US 9D was very spacious! Is it a safe assumption to use the 240 last as a reference and purchase a UK 7.5E = US 8.5D (what I have) for the 325 last? I would greatly appreciate the information given that you own other shoes that I can use as a reference to the Pembrokes like the MacNeils and 975s.
Great review/comparison. I like the in between vamp height of the HD's. I am not a fan of traditional beef roll or pinch penny loafers but it is very subtle and maintains a slim silhouette. The HD's and ALHS are imo the perfect loafer toe shape not too pointy not too wide or tall.
I just ordered a pair of these same Allen Edmunds in black. Very much looking forward to them. I hate broguing and don't love cap toes so this to my taste is the perfect versitle shoe design. Saphir is second to none in care products...
I am a Dinkelacker man. These are so amazing and different. Your Rio is great. This one is a dream of mine. One lucky day I will own a pair of those Dinkelacker Cordovans. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FOQ64gU5neo.html
Both companies make great shoes. Generally, AE looks better and Alden is more comfortable. Consequently, and I feel a bit shallow for admitting it, but I prefer AE.
Rev. James C yes, they aren’t available in the regular Shell Cordovan Collection. I been looking for those quite a while and found them on an Italian online shop borghini classic and italist.com. And you are right they are a rather casual style. I wear them with anything from Jeans to slacks. I would not wear them with a suit. Cheers
I am curious, why would an American ’shell' out for a pair of C&J cordovan, when he can pay perhaps $200 less for a very similar shoe - in terms of look and quality - from Alden? Or perhaps you don’t view Alden as pretty or as well constructed? Or you got these on sale and couldn’t resist. Thanks. :-)
Rev. James C Hello, basically you are right. But I am located in Europe, so the C&J in Shell retail for 750 € whereas Alden’s 990 go for 860+ Euros. I also own both Alden and AE PTBs but lately I came to the realisation that the C&J 325 Last works better for my aging feet;-) Besides that, I actually prefer the look of the Aldens. Which one do you prefer? Have a nice day.
ShoeMaster, Thank you for the speedy reply. Personally, I ADORE Crockett & Jones, owning several pairs. I have spent more than I should have in the past year on those beauties. However, I have yet to purchase any shell cordovan. Recently I went to the ‘January sale’ at the Birmingham Crockett & Jones. They had several pairs of shell cordovan shoes at a reduced price, though many were in the larger sizes, which would suit a 10.5 like you. Regards. :-)
Rev. James C oh, this Sounds very tempting! Here in the shops in Germany, they are hardly on sale. At least not the pairs I am looking for:-) Enjoy your C&J collection. I am hoping that one day, I’ll be abled to visit their factory outlet in Northampton. It’s a sickness, but it’s too much fun:)
ShoeMaster, It’s difficult when it comes to Crockett & Jones. During their sale, they seldom have the thing you REALLY want. I went to the factory shop also. That was a scrummage and a half. By the time I got in there, there wasn’t too much left... though, again, in the larger sizes, there was more of a selection. I ended up going for a pair of boots half a size down from my usual and discovered they worked perfectly with dress socks. lol Having a passion for quality footwear is definitely madness. :-)
Bought a pair of black shell cordovan C&J Bradfords on Jermyn St in London for £550. Hands down the best shoe i ever owned and worth every penny. They will last for decades, no need to apply any product, just give them a brush and they look like new. I have bought some calf C&J Bostons and Westfields after that, which have already been outperformed by the cordovans.
phototristan I would not do so. The Barrie Last, stormwelt and double-leather-sole is IMO too bulky. But on the other hand, I think that for 98% of people, all shiny black leather shoes would be fine with a suit. What do you think? Cheers
do you find any difference in the wear and comfort of the leather/under cork foot bed between the two? that's most important to me I choosing which to buy. thanks.
Daniel Kirschner To me, the AE footbed "breakes in" a lot quicker, but then in the long run feels a bit stiffer. Broken in well, Both of them are equally comfortable. But compared to AE, the aldens somehow feel like bricks on your feet. One may like it or not. I do!
