While since I've seen Steve Berry , as hyper as ever , mad as a ship's cat. Just the bloke to cast an eye of the superb Alvis. Agree as below, this video could of been longer. Great stuff.
Nice machine! Two quips, what are all the wholes in the windscreen chrome? And it would have been very interesting to see a vertical supercharger , if I heard that correctly.
No music. You're learning! ERA's are few and far between, so if you wanted the next best thing and you had some cash, i guess you'd build this. ERA would be marginally quicker, slightly more power, but this doesn't fall too far short. Sounds the same, must be a straight six. Rather nice. Preselecting gearbox?
Every time I see a Hyper, I always remember Tom Delaney and his amazing record of racing at Brooklands in the early 1930s to well into the 21st Century...in the same car! (IIRC it's now in the Coventry Museum of Transport).
Plenty of methanol racecars that start cold with no assistance. Or a little bit of petrol down carby throats or injection stacks. Once started they are fine for the meeting. I know someone running a 13-1 Chev as a 'daily driver' on methanol. None of this farting around with plugs etc.
And then the driving video is full with wind noise and muffled exhaust noise... I have done better with a GoPro on a chinmount using the in-build microphone...
I'm wondering, with my 'standard' Riley Special, that even if it does have VSCC papers, isn't it just cheating slightly to pretend rhis is a 1930 Alvis? Although, that might also be in the "ethos" of competition!
I had a customer, a really nice guy who had two Alvis and they were a beauty to be hold. TBH I had never heard of them at the time but you could tell even though I knew nothing about them that they were something very special.
A sweet-sounding engine - and a fast gear change with a surprisingly short throw despite the long lever.. For a moment, I thought it still had the original preselector.
