This video made me curious about the copyright situation since I would have assumed that an animation produced by a USSR state company would have gone into the public domain (or already been in the public domain, having been made by a public entity) after the state's dissolution, but it turns out its not the case. Here's what i've found, for anyone else curious: The animation was made by the Ukraine SSR state film studio Kyivnaukfilm in 1986-1988. After the 1991 dissolution of USSR, the animation division was spun off into the state enterprise Ukranimafilm who inherited the intellectual property rights. Eventually in 2019 they went bankrupt and were merged into the Dovzhenko Centre, a state archive/culture center/museum, so as to archive and preserve the studio's legacy, although it somehow still continues to operate as an animation studio as well. The Dovzhenko Centre now owns the copyright. From what i understand from Wikimedia, as a collaborative work published after 1951, it wont enter public domain until 70 years after the death of the last co-author. if we assume only the director is considered an author then that'd be 2088. Interesting aside the Dovzhenko Center seems to be in danger: besides nearly being hit by Russian bombing when they attacked Kiev, there's real estate developers pulling on Ukrainian government strings trying push the state into restructuring them to sell out their land and building so they can build commercial property on top of it. They keep getting less and less funding so i expect they're going to end up sold out and possibly privatized sometime in the future. Anyway, I highly doubt anyone involved in this animation's creation is receiving royalties or anything. And while I admire the game's wild creativity it seems like the sort of thing that properly should have been released for free with the dev maybe asking for donations. However one should not exclude the possiblity that this game is being sold with permission: outraged by a Russian developer profiting from an Ukranian property the game has been reported to both Steam and the Dovzhenko Center for infringement by a Ukrainian IT news outlet called Mezha Media, who have also encouraged their readers to report the game on Steam, and yet the game continues to be sold. Its possible that the game developer and the center may have come to a profit sharing agreement, I think it makes sense for a poorly funded art center to try and collect royalties from the old intellectual property they inherited instead of just taking it down, and it makes sense for the infringer to pay them so they can keep selling it instead of getting their game banned off steam. it may also just be that Steam is doing a bad job policing infringers when the copyright holder doesnt have lawsuit money to throw around
You make a slew of very interesting points (for example: I had no idea what the history of the company who produced the original film was). Not every artist has the benefit of a stable government which can protect their rights to profit off their work. Also, Steam is notoriously bad at taking any action against asset flippers and developers who present the work of others as if it were there own. When Steam makes a cut off of every plagiarized game, their motivation to police such things decreases precipitously.

@@HamidKarzai Not many people know about the dark Steam underbelly because it's typically hidden in budget games where the stakes of going after developers seem low. You rarely see this kind of thing in games over 99 cents.
The characters you play as, as well as the pirates you fight in the game are all from an old Ukrainian cartoon version of Treasure Island, which came out when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union (which is something it will hopefully never be again).

To me It's still kind of strange to open the Steam front page these days and see God of War being featured there. That would have been unthinkable 6 years ago.
It's funny, but I've never played a God of War Game. I have most of them, I just haven't gotten around to playing them. But yeah, capitalism makes strange bedfellows. 90s kids would never thought Mario and Sonic would have a whole line of mediocre games together.

Yeah, I do “uh” a lot. I don’t tightly script my reviews because I like to keep it loose (as opposed to the “stick to the script and never vary” approach I’m tired of from other RU-vidrs). It’s something I need to work on when I’ve got time because it’s a hard habit to break.
Strikey Sisters is one of the few games that I have completed at 100%. I can definitely recommend it too. It's fun and sometimes even funny. But the thing is, with its own thing, that it really becomes its own thing... if you use your sword more often! 😜

I've never played Rastan, but I'm currently playing Abathor. Many people compare it to Rastan, but it has a 4 player co-op. It's really fun, you should check it out if you like Rastan.

Yeah, that's kind of a joke because early on people had trouble finding the channel because there are other similarly named Badger-related channels, so the whole "it's a gaming channel" helps you to know you're in the right place.
I used to deal with a lot of existential dread, and what mostly cured it for me was realizing that humans simply can't fully comprehend the universe. Causal closure is busted, existence is way more mysterious than death, but one objective truth is that feeling good feels good, so I try to focus on that and helping others feel good. Don't worry btw, that last vid didn't bum me out too much, I was just bein a little tongue in cheek like I like to be.
Yeah, the older I get, the more I'm like, "whatever you do to help yourself feel like you have the slightest bit of control in this sea of chaos is fine by me." When I was a bit younger I got all caught up in whether or not people used the same coping strategies I did (namely, staring at the yawning void until it blinks, which it never does), but I've gotten less strident in recent years.
Hello, Badger! Good to see you are still going, I havent watched in a while, but liked your videos on Steam sales and Budgetstravaganza, and entered into a giveaway a while ago. For you and others watching, given the subject of existential dread and coping, I just want to relay a hopeful and positive message on my end of God being real and that Jesus does save. We all have a God-shaped hole in us and while that didn't drive me to pursue Christianity, as I'm still a younger adult and there are plenty of distractions to cover it up, I know for many, finding Christ helps. Have a blessed day for those reading, and I recommend truly giving time to considering Christianity beyond the typical stigma around religion, the evidence is there, and a gift is awaiting you, you are loved.

You know, I wouldn't have done it without the fact that I have a friend who is trying to do this for the Gamecube because that's the console his kids are nostalgic for, and Gamecube prices are through the roof, which is where Switch stuff will probably end up eventually.
For the record: I didn't do anything illegal in acquiring these games. When I say there are legal proceedings I mean there is a current criminal case against the former spouse of the person who sold me these games. If that awful former spouse (who is staring down the barrel of heavy prison time) chooses to be petty and vindictive (which is doubtful, but not impossible) then there is an outside chance these games could be pulled in as evidence in a counter-suit, which would likely go nowhere, but would be a tremendous pain in the butt for both me and the former spouse. At present it really doesn't seem likely, but until that person is in prison (where they belong) I really shouldn't say more about it. Cue the jazz music to play over the things I want to say but shouldn't.
