I've had a Tribit Stormbox Blast now for several months and really want to love it, but just can't. Yes, it's loud and the bass 'kicks' in a 'punchy' way, but it's just not pleasant to listen to. So harsh on the ears, no matter how I adjust the EQ. Tried several devices and multiple different EQ apps, including the Tribit one. I've also got a JBL Boombox 2 (two, in fact!). The JBL is on another level - a pleasure to listen to, with super deep non-punchy bass that simple massages your ears, rather than assaults them like the Tribit does. If all you are about is affordable, loud music, then go for the Tribit. But if you appreciate quality and enjoyment, go the JBL. Cool video, by the way!
As a company, deciding how to tune a speaker can be challenging because the reality is, you have to keep your target customer in mind, which in this case, probably prefers a punchy and clear sound. Personally I don't find it harsh or fatiguing but it does indeed sound clear and sparkly. With some genres or recordings I can see it being a tad bright, but I wonder why you weren't be able to fix this with their EQ. One thing I would improve with their next version is the low frequency extension. While yes, the bass is solid, I think they could have made it go a bit lower in response, which would have made it even more awesome! Have you updated the firmware? Maybe they ironed out some peaks and made it sound more balanced. I've never listened to a Boombox 2 but it's understandable with their experience to achieve better results in some areas, but the price is also a lot higher. Thanks for watching and your comment!
Fantastic response. Really appreciate your thoughts here and certainly agree with much of it. I like the description of 'fatiguing', as that is how I feel when listening to music through my Tribit. I know many will be fine with the sound, but it's certainly harsh on my ear. I'm convinced it's simple the way it's made/tuned. And yes, I have the latest firmware installed. I wish it sounded as good as the Boombox 2, as I love everything else about the Tribit. It's a quality construction, looks stylish, feels great to carry and is far easier to pack into the car, unlike the JBL Boombox. There's a hack that someone shared here on RU-vid - where you can get the Tribit to hit deeper bass. I have done it with mine and can vouch that it certainly works. Unfortunately though, I still find the punchy end of the bass to be too much, as well as the highs being too much, even when adjusted lower with EQ. Tribit is great and I know many people love it. I am spoilt my my JBL Boombox 2's - and yes, it was worth getting two of them - they are exquisite when paired in stereo! By the way, here's the link to the bass hack: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c7-aCJFnfHg.htmlsi=x4xGpgwnfYnyyt8N
I've seen that video and plan to try the mod, but I'm not sure it will change the sound that much. Indeed that's basically how you tune a passive radiator, by adding weights, but the main issue IMO lies in the digital sound processor (DSP) and the high pass filter they applied in the tuning profile. If you do a frequency sweep with a tone generator you'll see that there's a steep roll off under approximately 37 Hz (the drivers & PR's no longer move a lot). Would have been nice if the roll off rather began at 25 - 30 Hz instead, then the mod would have had a much stronger effect.
Adding weights to the passive radiators won't help much because anything under 35hz is filtered out by the DSP anyway. Could probably get more output down to about 37hz though.
Test made with the speakers playing at around 35% volume. Stay tuned for the 75% where the Blast unleashes it's power and the Onyx becomes a JBL Clip 😁
Not gonna lie it's refreshing to hear bass that low from a bluetooth speaker. I own a jbl xtreme 4 and personally never really liked how much they cut off the bass when it gets below 70hz
Totally agree! Not only they high pass it quite high but even the bass that's left will be again reduced when you pass 65% or so volume. I mean I understand they want to squeeze as much battery life as they can but at the expense of nice deep bass at normal volumes? No thanks. And often they don't even drive the speakers at their maximum potential, they could be moving a lot more and still not distort.
@@AudioCuriosity I was lucky I got mine on sale brand new for only $99 USD and usually its $475 which is a crazy discount. It was only discounted on Harman's official website too
@@AudioCuriosity speaking of flip 6 my parents have one and I've made a few videos but I can't use it anymore because they think I'm gonna break it for some reason. Trust issues I guess but the store we went to when we bought it had brand new Xtreme 2's which was interesting
thank you for sharing. have you ever tried how much latency goin on with jack connection when dsp disabled? Im looking for low or no latency speakers in this size?
@@AudioCuriosity thank you I was hoping that way. Do you think is this can be usable as a playing speaker with daws? Im Ableton user I thought I can use my own DSP so without pushing to much it can maybe survive right? Also how about the Charge 5 , in my local 5 is more cheper? Have you ever tested?
Yeah you should be able to use your own sound processing without issues as long as it's not some crazy 24dB bass boost and high volume. Also, for better bass extension with dsp disabled, I recommend sealing one of the passive radiators, hear the effect in my video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FppU0COJ_so.html . About the Charge 5, I don't think it's possible to disable it's DSP like with the 4. Might be achievable something similar with the phone set to Mono output but I'm not sure. So if disabling the DSP is important to you Charge 4 is the right model.
Theoretically it should be possible to increase battery capacity simply by adding one or two cells in Parallel with the existing one. But it's highly recommended to use the exact same model as the original and also make sure it's genuine as well, not fake brand cell. It requires a bit of soldering and DIY but I think it's possible.
It's the first step into actually opening the speaker if there are some issues with it. Or to simply watch the tiny driver and passive radiator move :)
It can indeed cause damage if not done with caution, I mentioned this in a comment bellow which I now pinned! I just say low frequency mode simply because that's how this mode is known in the community.
Hi, I have 2 jbl flip 5 speakers that I use in stereo mode. I want to sell them and upgrade to a single portable one with even more bass. Would you recommend it or should I keep them? The thing is IDK if theres something better cause I tried the charge 5 and I honestly think my flip's 5 sound better together than a single one. The xtreme might be good but its price is too expensive and if it sounds the same as my speakers it would be a waste. Does anybody know what should I do? Should I bought a xtreme or keep my speakers?
I agree that getting a Charge instead wouldn't really be an upgrade. If size isn't that important then see if you can find a Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 7 or 8, I have the 7 and it's bass is really impressive and has stereo tweeters too. I've also heard good things about the new Go Play 3 but that might be too expensive. And look for Harman Kardon Citation 200 if you can still find one at a reduced price, that's also a compact bass beast.
of course it does.. use headphones and hear it yourself. for this to work your speaker has to be in LFM, play a bass boosted song and cover one passive radiator, you'll hear the difference in the low frequencies
How did you format the drive it to get those speeds ? Was it ExFat, or NTFS ! Did you try with different block sizes , do you know HOW to used DiskPart ?
Just checked, I get same speeds with both NTFS or exFAT which is 277 read and 35 write but on my main PC I get 254 read which is a bit weird. On both I use USBC connection directly, without an adapter. Also, not sure why in this video I got 304, maybe the heat tests I've made after this affected the drive a bit. What speeds do you get?
In China's Taobao app, merchants are selling nearly new Google Home Max devices for as low as $138, I bought one !But the serial numbers have been removed.
