Did I hear the funeral March by Chopin? It's beautifully done with the piano. The thing about Lauren is that she always managed to play it with such clarity which is a delight to the ears !
Brilliant preformence. Not just the music, but the knowledge and the verity of the program are amazing. The ballad of sweet William has similar lyrics parts from another old folk song Matty Groves. In sweet William she ask: how do you like your bed master, how do you like your sheets and how do you like your lady that in your arms asleep. In Matty Groves lord Donald ask Matty: how do you like my fether bed and how do you like my sheet? How do you like my lady who lies in your arms asleep? This is very interesting. The song 'Ho sailer boy' has similar music parts that reminded me Turkey in the straw.
There is some of the most exquisite pianism on display here. Zhang, the 2018 BBC Young musician winner plays Schuman’s Kreisleriana with fire and delicacy in equal measure. Some pianist over-exaggerate the difference between the two characters but somehow she is able to demonstrate that it is two poles of the same character with seamless phasing of the transitions and in the slower passages you can feel the pained expressions of Schumann’s self-reflecting masterpiece. The Chopin Bflat minor sonata is well paced and she can make the Steinway sing in the lyrical passages. As an encore we are treated to The E major Scherzo. Magical.
Brilliant concert, really enjoyed the vigour and energy of this young quartet. The Boccherini quartet was unknown to me and with its twists and turns and candenza for first violin made an impact. Bartok's sixth quartet is a tough piece like its companion the fifth, and I think this young quartet gave a good performance, perhaps with the influence of the Diotima quartet, so there' might be a new French interpretation of Bartok's music developing. Brahms' first quartet was played very warmly and in the way Brahms liked his music to move as nothing dragged or cloyed. This is the middle-years leonine Brahms, not the grizzle-bearded oft caricatured of later life. Anyway, a fantastic opportunity and many thanks to FUMA for sponsoring the event. More concerts on Sundays!
Would love to see accurate captions for the speech - sound is not clear, especially for those with hearing impairment. Thank you. Missing my live visits to the wonderful concerts.
Recital starts around 9 minutes in. I had the very great pleasure of attending this event - lovely voice (much "warmer" than the video sound quality here suggests on my computer), marvellous communication with audience, superb pianism, and an inventive and rewarding programme: equally delightful to hear such good performances of familiar fravourites and to hear the "English" (by language) works for the first time. Young performers whose careers I hope to follow keenly in the future. Diolch i chi'ch dau yn fawr iawn !
I'm curious as to where the lunchtime concert video disappeared to for the 29th October 2021. Any chance of a reupload of the full performance by Jill?
This is absolutely a-mazing! It brought back amazing memories of once being lucky enough to be a part of this... And makes me miss being able to sing! I am so impressed and love love loved seeing some familiar faces! Merry Xmas, Hannah Spanner X
