My names Ollie, Im a Disabled RU-vidr, Photographer, and Wheelchair fencer.
I spent 6 years studying architecture but then realised that wasn't for me. Now I spend my days training hard in fencing to try and get to the 2020 Paralympics with team GBR and making videos for youtube that address the stigma that surrounds the word.
Well done for making this video, not all people look the same. Im 52 but was disabled from 19. Alot of us who have blue badge have had same abuse. Stay safe .
Sorry to hear that you are experiencing discrimination from narrow minded people. This week someone shouted at me that "you ain't disabled" - A miracle, I thought! This behaviour is incredibly stressful for people who need a blue badge. These comments are somewhat fascist. Bundling people together with pre-conceived ideas about what they think disabled people should look like and be like. I am active and busy and have friends who are disabled and still cycle and do martial arts. It does not mean that we don't have difficulties or times when we can't take another step, or experience extreme pain trying to squeeze into our cars if someone parks too close. Thanks for making this video. It makes me feel less alone in my experiences and more empowered to improve life for myself and for others in my area.
As a blue badge holder. You're not supposed to park in a loading bay. I do agree with most of what you say. You also get none badge holders parking in disabled parking spaces.they actually believe they're entitled and get aggressive when challenged.
You have valid reason/s first having a blue badge regardless of what car you drive , F em that’s what I say , you don’t have to justify your car or having a blue badge to the public , it’s all legal
Great video, I had a bike accident about 6 weeks ago and have a tibial plateau fracture and had 2 screws fitted to screw the tibia together. I was inspired seeing you skating on crutches and wondered how safe this would be for me to do. I am still not weight bearing but dying to get out but don't want to risk doing any damage. I think I would be able to skate along a flat level surface like the seafront and wonder if you have any tips about skating on crutches. Thanks Dave.
If you are disabled and can afford what they call a supercar or even just a top quality sports car and are able to drive it or have it converted then why not buy one and enjoy life. I became disabled in 1984 after an accident at work and bought my own cars until 4 years ago whe l went onto the motability scheme. Getting the vare l wanted was painless and the garage staff treat me very well. You cannot see my disability but l have 14 areas of spinal damage and damaged legs after falling from a roof. I can walk a short distance, merely yards with a walking stick then have to rest for a while. I once made a supermarket security guard examine my blue badge card as he said l wasn't disabled. He did apologise. Recently on a visit to the drs a woman berated me for parking in a disabled bay simply because l had a big car. When l showed her my badge she at least had the coutesy to apologise. Not every disability can be seen and now that councils have taken over the isdue of disabled badges, obtaining one is more difficult as you are not dealing with medical professionals and in most instances it is done over the telephone to some nameless person who decides there and then if you are entitled unless you have the documention from the dwp. You should not be stereotyped into buying a small runabout car if you are disabled simply to please people who are jealous of you being able to park closer to a shop.
I use a wheelchair and have lost count of the number of filthy looks I’d get when parking a shiny white BMW that I’d worked hard for. What I would say is that as a wheelchair user I need the extra space of blue badge bays. I could’ve give a shit about the free parking aspect and not always free either.. I’ve had plenty of parking fines. Also it’s not always easy to find an empty blue badge bay as these days everyone seems to have one! It does annoy me that many blue badge holders don’t need the extra space when a normal sized bay would do them just fine. Many times when all the disabled bays are full I’ve had to park in the far corner of a car park so that I can have space to open my door and get wheelchair out without fear of someone parking right next to me. Being disabled and trying to park is way way harder than for able bodied drivers.
Fully agree with you, there's no connection between wealth and disability. The key work is need. My wife had polio, and the blue badge allowed us to park closer to the shop door, e g Ikea. Twenty years agoi I had a Porsche Boxster, then later a Morgan, but her walking was just getting worse: her last four years were in a wheelchair.
What I find really annoying are able bodied people that park in disabled bays, basically because they are to lazy to walk a few yards extra. I have had my blue badge over twenty years and nobody has ever asked to check it and that's the problem. Nobody ever checks that you are the genuine owner so people just take liberties as though disabled people aren't as important as them.
Joys if the world /times we live in . The ignorance and proganda of what is viewed as disabled, the lives we should have and how we should be treated.. to be viewed as disabled you need to be house bound, imprisoned in your own home, not able to do anything, no life, no quality of life. Look like hell/bad and poor. Your not allowed to have a life or quality of life. Cant even have relationships either without being judged and God forbid you have sex , disabled people cant have that either. Certainly not a nice car or nice anything. Disabled people of course dont work and certainly cant have a decent job. Those who cant work because of there health are scroungers and liars . Even those who excuse those who cant work due to health condem them in the same breath. Disable are viewed and treated as worse than criminals. Would quite literally be better of and treated better in this country as a criminal than you do disabled. People forget and do not comprehend or accept that those with disabilities do not ask, choose or want to be disabiled. Beither woukd we if given the choice but are punished for it anyway all the same as if we are /have and people truly believe its right that we are, that disabled do not have and should not have the same basic rights, wants or needs in life. We are just suppose to stare at 4 walls and wait to die nothing more. Or you have a visable disability but it has to be on show so people can actually see it and Of course visable disability are always automatically worse than invisible. Same with wheelchairs . This is slightly better than those with invisible but not really at the same time. Just more accepted. Blue badges and any disabled facilities or concessions are seen as benefits by everyone else and whether people want to admit or not there is jealously and envy there. People view it as disabled getting something they cant and it not being fair. That disabled get something for nothing even if its far from the truth . They dont see or accept that any concession or disabled facilities there is for disabled, we would happy rather not need or have access to it because the disability they have comes at a far far greater cost than any concessions or facilities give. Eg use your badge and you get ' aw your so lucky you have that and can park there ' its such a stupid comment but people truly believe it ." Yes so lucky i live life of constant pain, torture and hell , have no life or quality of it , losr everything people take for granted but i get badge and a parking space next to a door" . " yes im so lucky, i lost my leg but i get a badge and to park close to a door " " yes im so lucky , im confined to a wheelchair and never able to walk again . But i get badge and to park bext to door " 😂 and so on . As well as as dealing with verbal and even physical abuse every time use it . Plus theres always that part of them that believe disabled are scoungers and fakers because that is what is constantly pushed. Government likes the hate and divide they create as them the public supports them , encourages them when they take more of what little help there is left away . Common sense, logic and deceny are becomming a thing of the passed
Sorry but the blue badge isn't actually a legal document in mcdonalds, if the site want it used by others they can allow that, other disabled but non blue badge, or non disabled as its not valid
To add u dont have to be a driver to get a blue badge, so a person might be getting a lift in another person car which coukd be sports or limousine or anything
It happens to me regularly as i am living with Schumanns disease And regularly. I cop smack from people wanting to know what my Disability is. I even have had the police called on me.
It's jealousy. I have a Bentley Bentayga and I get ranted at all the time and they demand to know what my disability is because because I'm not in a wheel chair. The police are as bad and I often get threatened with arrest, I even got taken to a police station in Glasgow because I, "didn't look disabled".
if those people who like to complain about our blue badges and card we own wish to have my disability and my blue badge in exchange for their natural god given mobility then they would be quite welcome to it if it was possible i would gladly exchange it with them
I have to agree with the above.. Loading bays are for loading ,NOT for parking, blue badge or no blue badge, especially not to stop for a coffee. I think what has happened historically is that blue badges for people with disabilities were introduced as a sensible concession to allow disabled drivers or passengers go about their lives. But I have seen blue badge holders parking on double yellow lines and thinking they can get away with it. I see that you admit receiving lots of parking fines, so maybe you try to get away with it yourself ? There’s a reason for those parking restrictions, it’s to do with blocking traffic / dangerous for other road users/ in bus lanes / and the fact that you don’t respect that and show that you have received parking tickets seems to reflect a certain sense of entitlement. It’s not about being able to pay the fine, it’s about understanding the reason those restrictions are there. I do understand why elderly drivers find it distasteful to see young drivers parked in disabled bays in super cars. I have elderly parents who walk pretty slowly and with some difficulty, but they would never dream of applying for a blue badge, as they feel it is a special concession for those who genuinely need it to help them in their lives; not a carte blanche for an entitled young man in a supercar to park in a loading bay and go for a coffee. It’s a generational attitude of generosity which feel these concessions should be reserved for those in genuine need . It’s not about jealousy, it’s about respecting the feelings of those who don’t believe in taking advantage in every situation. I suspect this message will fall on deaf ears and seem old-fashioned, but the modern tendency towards ever bigger , faster cars seems to forget that roads , parking areas , etc are limited shared public spaces and therefore we should allow space for other road users, not want to take up as much space as we feel entitled to. It’s about a modern attitude of self-engrandisement and a complete loss of sight of propriety and, dare I say it, any sense of seemliness or modesty. (a virtue which has all but disappeared ) To park your Maclaren in a loading bay with a blue badge and going for a coffee is in very poor taste and I understand why it is offensive to some people. it comes across as just inconsiderate. As drivers with older cars are being penalised for driving in London’s Ulez zone , it is insulting to see super cars seemingly doing whatever they want, park anywhere just because they have a blue badge and those with older cars and blue badges having yet more concessions. What started out historically as a sensible concession has become an exaggerated sense of entitlement taking unfair advantage of a limited shared resource.
This video was awesome and really helped me understand my own internalised ableism about my disability. We need to talk about disability and masculinity more in society.
I just paid for my first blue badge, waiting for it in the post. I didn't know it meant free parking, I thought it just meant you can park in the disabled bays.. wow nice!
Thank you so much for sharing this. One question - I hope you don’t mind… is it really fifty fifty? Is it his opinion or fact? And if so: maybe it has changed now days so it won’t be so risky? If you at one point in life has so much pain you feel like an amputation is something you want to do? I don’t know how you feel today? Kindest regards from Sweden
People think all disabled people are poor which is not the truth. Yes people with disabilities are more likely to be poor. Some disabled people can work and earn the same as abled bodyed people they may need some suport to do so. People also dont relise how hard it is for disabled people.I can relate to being young and disabled. People dont understand that I have pain and can't walk far and get very fatigued esaly. I need a esay way home this can mean my friends or family diving me home, taxi or bus.
Ty Oliver…..Born with No hip, countless operations and I’ve jus had my blue badge revoked after 10 years…. Apparently I have to prove myself to the council……local council are now qualified surgeons!!

I love the fact that watching makes me realize there were more amazing adaptive athletes in the 80’s than I realized. I was a pioneer in paratriathlon back in 1986. We simply had no hero’s to emulate back then. All we had was a drive to push ourselves and the ability achieve amazing feats despite what some would see as our shortcoming. We adaptive athletes are AMAZING!
Not going to lie I'm absolutely terrified to park my car (not as nice as a 570S but it's a 370Z) in a disabled space despite having Muscular Dystrophy, I only got the badge about a week ago and getting in and out it's very clear I'm disabled but when the cars alone it's not clear!
A blue badge is about a person's disability not how much money they have. Also if they appear "not disabled" and have a blue badge, that's their business. All that needs to happen is one displays their blue badge. Sick of all this crap. I am waiting for the day someone tries it on with hubbie. (not because he has a posh car though lol, it is nearly a classic, its that old.) He is entitled to a mobility car, but we find we have more control and less stress having our own.
@@cliffordbuttle4529 where I live in West London there’s still a lot who get discretionary ones through the council, it’s said if you “know” the right doctor it’s easy 😵💫
Well I have the bike which is in the picture of my profile. 34 grand motorcycle but apparently I can't have a disabled badge because people who buy things that don't conform to people that are disabled therefore must have lots of lots of parking tickets every month when we have every right to use them. Just because I ride a motorcycle does it make me any less able. Ridiculous
