john looks like he came in late after a work related meeting, picked up his guitar (which was mistakenly left in the trunk of his 98' accord) and went onstage to teach gary how to perform a blues song
Beautiful footage and excellent sound quality it could and should be a benchmark for other concert recordings. Edit: How many hours did you spend alone or with friends watching music videos? For me the answer is countless. Imagine a music collection today of hundreds of HD videos like this one and just hitting play. In the future videos have to be HD or virtual reality. If not we will end up losing these great artists like footprints in the sand to time and tide. If the old videos can be cleaned up, restored, made whole into HD quality I think it’d be like mining gold.
Oh this is nice! Finally I can transcribe some more of this "Althea" Solo...and also the "Queen Of California" one is sick. He really plays/played best with that '64 Strat!!
I don't even remember how many times I've watched the original video in the past 10 years, so seeing this video with soundboard quality audio makes me incredibly happy. Thank you so much!
I was 9 when this show happened, and I've never been so upset that I missed something I wouldn't care about for another two years of my life. The first three songs off Try are the reason I am who I am today, and the Tabernacle is my favorite venue in town. What I wouldn't give to have experienced this tour, knowing that really there'd never be another one like it.
Shout out to Bobby Byrd for creating this amazing beat and “hook”. Also, shoutout to Jay Z for paying him an amazing amount for sampling Byrd’s “I’m Not To Blame” song. Very generous especially how James Brown cheated him for years
@4:43 John and Conan obviously have never heard of the Australian band The Angels (Rick Brewster) Though Conan is right on the money with his comment here. Guitar playing, in a rock/blues band, is all about being cool. And there was no cooler rock guitar player than Rick Brewster of The Angels. Standing almost emotionless, while belting out pure rock riffs and leads!!!! I have a big beef with guitarists these days, (youtube guitarists) making weird faces when they are playing, female youtube guitarists are the worst, like they are faking the look of them having the BigO, which IMO completely shifts the focus away from their guitar playing and the tone they are getting from their instrument. Its like, all real rockers of the 60s, 70s and 80s have spawned a generation of "Pornhub" guitar players. Anyway Conan O'Brien, knows playing a guitar in a rock band is all about being cool, being the coolest. And yeah, Rick Brewster beat you Conan!! By a good few decades!!!!
I have to comment one more time his singing is incredible on this song but you really have to pay attention to his guitar technique switching from fingers to pick he's just incredibly underrated as a guitar player because everyone views him as a pop singer because of his writing style but when you see him live he is just a different animal
