I have the same issue , my seal is torn too. so just ordered one. Hopefully it's a nice simple fix. Cheers for the video. Will update if it worked or not.
Hi, i wonder if you could help pls? I took this small first unit out of oir conservatory. Stripped it down, cleaned glass throughly and used clear mastic to seal before gaffa taping all around. I struggled to get all the beading back in, but it misted up AGAIN within hours! Where did i go wrong pls? Tks v much. John
Glad you made that point about using the correct grease... The amount of people that think that WD40 is suitable for every thing... When it's not... Its WD40...not WD41😉😉
Thanks for the video , wasn’t sure about what was going on with that crank pulley with the 4 bolts , obviously going into this without locking pins or anything special so was reassuring to see someone else do it 1st so I knew it wasn’t 1 of them keyless pulleys or something. Thanks again for the time you put into making this video 👍🏻 🏴🇬🇧🇮🇱🏴🇬🇧
A replacement unit would cost about £32 and comes with a ten year guarantee, taking in two tubes of sealant you can save £27 doing this yourself if you have a whole day to spare. Cutting the glass open is extremely dangerous often leading to slashing your opposite arm holding the glass which is why glass companies not longer offer this service.
Good video The Repairer, unfortunately today I have the same issue but all 3 parts of the lock mechanism (top, middle, bottom) are all stuck in the locked position and not sure what to do.......
@@TheRepairer It's a weird one, all lock mechanisms are stuck in lock position, you can lift the handle to turn the key both directions as if its locking/unlocking, but the handle wont move downwards which pulls all the mechanisms out of the frame to open the door. I can't figure out what has happened.....
Thanks for this. Glaziers should offer a refurb service themselves but I guess selling a new window is more profitable. Capitalism rewards consumption and penalises conservation. Throwing away perfectly good glass just because the seal has gone is nuts.
Fascinating, thanks! Really interesting to see how DG units are assembled. However, this definitely convinces me to always get a new replacement unit, this would finish me! Great job though, you've done. 🙂
That’s not a considerable amount of moisture, I had a blown window that had 6 inches of water between the panes, it was the clearest part of the window😂
Lawsuit warning! Sell your home without disclosing these kind of improvements, you are very liable. Per U.S. building code (your responsibility as the homeowner). Each pane shall bear the manufacturer's mark designating the type and thickness of the glass or glazing material. The identification shall not be omitted unless approved and an affidavit is furnished by the glazing contractor certifying that each light is glazed in accordance with approved construction documents that comply with the provisions of this chapter. Safety glazing shall be identified in accordance with Section 2406.3. Most Regulations suck but some do save lives. Many people died for us to live care free and oblivious of the dangers that surround us everyday. If someone got hurt by this window they will seriously take everything you own, and a % of everything you make in the future. The victim, glass manufacturer, your city/state/federal building code, your own homeowners insurance would sue. Lawyers would have a field day.
Interesting scenario I’m in the wrong jurisdiction but I am somewhat enlightened . I see the aforementioned repairs as falling under maintenance not an improvement. This begs the question does maintenance have to be disclosed at the point of a sale?
@@TheRepairer are you a licensed contractor? Does your jurisdiction have a building code? Are inspections required? Permits? Schedule an inspection if yes. I’d pay to see that video.
@bigbear2011b In the extremely unlikely event of me ever be placed on trial for my repairing actions in my jurisdiction you can count on me taking the Fifth!
Takes 10 minutes to replace the unit with a new one, this messing around with an old unit isn't cost effective, it will be the same in a few months, I have replaced thousands of units, why bother with this
They last for years that’s why I repair them and it isn’t a ten minute job. Here is how a DIY replacement would work 1) remove beading to accurately measure the failed DGU length x width depth. 2) Contact glazier for replacement prices and engage one. 3) Refit window beading and wait days on end for it to be produced. 4) Collect DGU unit from Glazier in a suitably sized vehicle. 5) Remove beading and fit the replacement unit. 6) Dispose of old DGU somehow.
It's my home and my window in the video, the repair has lasted 10 months. No one has noticed it was a repair instead of being replaced and tradesmen have stopped knocking on my door trying to rip me off.
Inject acitone between the silicone & metal frame. You will find the silicone just peels away. Agree you require to make edges & inside panes spotlessly clean. I also used white vinigar and baking soda, also glass cleaner. I clamped the pains together while filling outer edge with silicone. Moving one clamp where necessary to inject silicone. Note: do not over tighten clamp. Requires just enough to fix internal frame in position and hold glass faces in close contact while injecting silicone. Use old credit card or similar to smooth and spread silicone. Use good quality thick gaffa tape around edge to keep silicone in place.
I had an issue with a bolt coming loose and jamming the door but I didn't want to take my door off the hinges, indeed to do so was quite difficult. In the end I worked out that if I used two dinner knives with a slightly seated edge, one above the bolt and one below, I was able to screw the bolt back in quite easily and then the door opened. I then finished the bolt off with a screwdriver
@@TheRepairer . Ok, cheers for the quick reply. MOT is due shortly & I'm panicing slightly, I'll have a try tomorrow & see if its possible otherwise i'll have to do what you did. Regards from Dave B
Thank for your videos. Gave it a go and happy with the result. Just make sure you really clean the glass that will be inside the seal. Rinse several times to get all the cleaning chemicals off the glass or they may appear a couple of days after the unit is in the frame. This happened to me after the wife cleaned the glass and insisted the small streaks are not cleaning chemicals and that the glass is damaged. I will now repeat the repair on the same unit and clean the glass myself to see if the glass expert is right😂 I will let you the outcome when I get it done. The time v buy new isn’t the issue for me. I really enjoy the satisfaction of doing things myself and learning new skills. Once again thanks for the video one of the best on RU-vid on this subject.
Thanks for the feedback, I am wired that same way. I could buy new but where is the fun in that. I’m pleased that you have successfully repaired your window.
If it’s not draining well it will disable the spin cycle, it would be worth disconnecting and checking the drain pipe is totally clear of water . See if it will spin on the switched spin cycle first.
Thanks! I have power at the connector, and the tailgate opens/closes freely when unlocked. The lock mechanism has no free movement at all. The actuator piston is in the compressed position. Would it be best just to replace the actuator, or the whole locking mechanism? 🤔
Superb refit mate thorough explanation and a tidy finish, sat here looking at mine in the conservatory of similar size to your project. I’d much rather prefer to give it a try for less than fork out for a new one. How is it holding up 10 month on?? Thanks pal
WTF did you even let the air out. Take the bloody tyre off and apply some heat to relax the alloy before you destroy the thing please people don't repair your alloys like this.
Such an advisably chosen username - I could have communicated my intentions in this video but didn’t for some reason. The idea of the repair was to see if I could improve the rim enough to use it without paying for costly tyre removal and refitting. I could have deflated the tyre but given that air is easily compressible. I fail the see what difference this would have made.
@@TheRepairer If that rim split while you were doing what you were doing it could of killed you next time you want to do something like that take the tyre off it's really not that hard to do with tyre levers or at least let the air out take my advise it may save your life.
@mrgrumps3062 I think it may have had all of 30 psi in it at a guess possibly less as it hadn’t been used as it came in a job-lot of three . Are you in some way applying the dangers of an Hgv tyre and rim combination which are inflated upto 130psi in the case of a super single tyre. These can provide in the region of 2 tonnes of energy during an tyre explosion?
@@TheRepairer I am not trying to have a go at you but what you did was a very dumb thing to do a tyre letting go inflated to 30psi can and have killed do some research on it also when you try to reshape a bend in a alloy rim you should use some heat again do some research. If your going to do this sort of thing at least learn about it first.
We are obviously at opposite ends of the spectrum with this one and will have to agree to disagree but for the benefit of the many readers of this thread please point then in the direction of this research via a link if possible.
It has a locking tab to push in on the side next to the pink wire just push that tab in and pull the connector off. It doesn’t take much force to remove.
I'm utterly shocked to find this video was made 12 days ago. Im doing brakes on my 32 year old c25 this weekend. I really appreciate how comprehensive your videos are. I followed your coolant video earlier this week. Subscribed.
@@TheRepairer A genuine thank you for the informative videos. I don't mind turning spanners, but am not terribly knowledgable. I had to laugh, I just found your V70 playlist. I maintain both an 06 plate v70 and xc70 (as well as a 32 year old, new to me Citroen Hymer). You have very good taste in motors. 🙂
