My wife and I are VERY interested in buying a LR series IIa 109 to convert into something we can live in for 2-3 weeks while exploring Europe. My only worry is the engine power to move everything I would add in the back. Can you please comment on how fast (or slow) your series II is with everything you have? Can you cruise comfortably cruise at 80km/h - 90km/h on the highway and what kind of gas mileage are you getting? Oh, and how is the noise level while driving? thank you so much! btw, do you have a video going through your LR?
@foldinthemap
@foldinthemap 11 дней назад
Errrrmmmm short answer is, no not really, no one cruises comfortably in a series any faster than 60kmph. The whine of the gearbox and the engine/road/body noise is very loud. I don’t mind it but if you’re worried about being slow, it’s slow.. That wonderful little gearbox when you go offroad though… it takes that little tractor engine and puts a lot of torque to the ground. That’s what they’re best for. For long distance on road travel I’d go a disco 2 or maybe a Range Rover classic for the more retro feel? Td5 defender would go alright too. No not yet! Great to hear from you and thanks for your comment, it sounds like an awesome trip you have planned!

@foldinthemap Thank you for the reply! I was thinking of going crazy with sound deadening to make it quieter and try to remove the tin can sound. But it may not help too much. As for the speed, that might be an issue 🤔. By the time I import a series 2a into Portugal and factoring all the maintenance and build for the rear, it'll be around €20,000 +/-. If I want to go with a D110, i'd be looking at €30,000 +/-... The joys of living in Portugal and their crazy (and illegal) import tax scheme. But man, 60km/h is slow! Haha. 😬 but it might be worth us saving €10,000. Like they say, its the journey that counts, not the destination, right? Right? I thought about the disco 2 and RRC, but they dont have the interior space like the S3 or D110. I need to do some soul searching 🧐

Having done thousands of miles in an old Series 2a, I do miss the charming feeling of doing it 'old school'. It is makes you feel like a genuine traveller. I do not, however, miss only having 50-odd horsepower, leaf springs, and manual steering. My 60+ year old body is well past that. That being said, my 1987 LR 110 (pre-Defender) is still old school charming enough even with coil springs, power steering and 230+ horsepower. It still requires you to be a trail side mechanic to keep it going. They say that 90% of Land Rovers are still on the road...and 10% have made it back home. There is more than a hint of truth in that! ;-)
@foldinthemap

The series Rovers are brutally simple and it’s an absolute challenge to drive and work on them… but sometimes they just make you smile more than any other car. Wouldn’t mind coil springs and power steering though!

Greetings! Thanks for watching we hope to visit Ireland one day. The engine is very early series 2, only made from 1958-1962 if I remember right. That’s possibly why it looks different. I had a nightmare sourcing big end bearings for this as they basically aren’t being made anymore. The workaround is using TD5 bearings … so I guess it’s part Td5 now 😂😂😂

You will get in trouble spelling Scotch "whiskey". Strictly for the Irish and Americans. In Scotland it's whisky.
@foldinthemap
@foldinthemap 5 месяцев назад
Aren’t all whiskies exactly the same though? Bourbon whisky surely doesn’t differ much from a single malt scotch
@TheEulerID
@TheEulerID 5 месяцев назад
@@foldinthemap no, they are not all the same. Ingredients can vary, the number of times it is distilled varies between Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky (3c& 2 times I believe. However, that is not the most important thing, which is social, culture and tradition. Both the Irish and Scots are very attached to their particular spellings, and if referring to Scotch, it is always whisky, if it is made in Ireland, then it is whiskey (as it is in the USA too). This is not a matter of just the rational. The Scots have a particular reverence for Scotch whisky, which verges on the mystical. Single malt Scotch is also distilled from fermented malted barley, bourbon uses, I believe, mostly from corn fermented mash with some other grains added.
@foldinthemap

@@foldinthemap All societies need their myths, and scotch whisky is one of those key parts of Scottish identity. It's uisge beatha (or water of life in Gaelic). Calling Bourbon almost identical to single malt scotch whisky would be fighting talk in some parts. As far as the differences in distillation and the materials use, simply look it up. Barley has been a lot in Scotland due to the climate. There are some areas best not gone into, whatever science might say. This is a quoted passage from Tobias Smollett’s 1771 The Expedition of Humphry Clinker in which the young Jeremy Melford observes in comparison with the lowlander's favoured 2 pence beer... "The Highlanders, on the contrary, despise this liquor, and regale themselves with whisky; a malt spirit, as strong as geneva, which they swallow in great quantities, without any signs of inebriation. They are used to it from the cradle, and find it an excellent preservative against the winter cold, which must be extreme on these mountains - I am told that it is given with great success to infants, as a cordial in the confluent smallpox, when the eruption seems to flag, and the symptoms grow unfavourable." nb. the book is a comic novel, but Tobia Smollet was a Scot, and was writing with a certain wry humour about his fellow Scots.
