I’m always in and out of RU-vid but your videos are amazing and I wanna sincerely thank you for such wonderful warm teachings and wish you a billion blessings, definitely one of the greatest on here to do it right. Truly grateful! 😉👍🏽
So much unnecessary hate on this video, Brian! I found your lesson very useful and picked up some helpful stuff. I also found CAGED useful to help me visualize the fretboard and also as a way to learn the pentatonic shapes. I never realized there are so many die hard CAGED defenders out there though. Like anything, it should just be viewed as a tool to help someone learn. Maybe it works for you or maybe it doesn’t. Either way, thanks for the video man! Keep it up!
yeah, turns out it's a divisive topic. I've also had to look at myself and consider why it bothers me, because it does. To be fair, I rneed to do a full video about the caged system, tablature, and other Guitar based systems that enable--even encourage--people to avoid learning the notes on the guitar and actually understanding music. The system of music is already so incredible, and it's all you need. thanks for the comment!
oh no! there isn’t a c minor open shape I’m going to cry! Move the third down a half step and decide how to fret the notes based on the context? Is that just impossible in your brain?
yeah I don't think you understand what I'm saying at all, but if it's OK I can just answer directly in a video and tag you? i'd like to respond to the various… Interesting comments on this video .
@@BLazLessons I think its you that dont understand caged at all. It doesnt mean you cant learn inversions as well. The inversions are in the same shapes, but you can also use caged as a map for scales and arpeggios. If you are a good player you are using caged whether or not you call it caged. There is zero disadvantages to learning it
I changed the name from "CAGED is Goofy" to "CAGED is OK", because I do realize that it has helped people, so I don't want to invalidate that. BUT as a teacher (and CAGED is a teaching method, not a playing method, IMHO), I don't think CAGED is helpful ultimately, for reasons I will continue to elucidate on my quest to give people a more complete strategy for leaning the fretboard. We're all trying to learn at the end of the day!
caged doesn't fall apart with minor chords at all and you can still use inversions and other systems, which you should. I have never heard an actual good player argue against caged. It's almost always intermediate players who are to lazy to learn more than one system. It's like saying barry harris min6dim chord scales are better or worse than other chord scales. It just doesn't work that way. Caged is just a fact of the fretboard. nobody is saying it should be the only system.
You can count me as one good player arguing against CAGED. Caged falls apart with minor chords because the open C and open G shapes do not have minor counterparts. As you well know, we play G minor using either the E minor shape or the A minor shape if we are playing a full barre chord. If caged helps you that's great, but I steer people away from it because playing inversions, melodies, and all types of chords and songs up and down the neck is the real way to learn the instrument.
@@BLazLessons I am not sure i count you as a good player. You are not bad, but there are only pretty basic stuff on your channel. I think if you improved your knowledge of the fretboard you would see that there are no "bad" or "good" patterns, there are all just there on the fretboard
I agree. I find CAGED useless. I have no idea what people see in it as a benefit. The C shape is the same as the D shape. No one plays the G shape up the neck. CAGED is confusing to newer players and useless to more experienced players. The fact that chords and scales can be moved up and down the neck to change the chord or key is important.. The fact that you can make the same changes to the same shapes and get major, minor, suspended, etc. chords is important. People should promote that discussion. Not CAGED.
dude some of the haters on this channel need to fuccck off, this teacher s going out of his way to help people, so why be a dick! the cat knows his theory and has a music history from the road, as I myself as a touring musician. I bet not one of these cutting corner haters have been there even to try but only 2 criticize cos thats way of the gun these days. be grateful motherfuckerz... B Laz y doin a gr8 fucking job for free teaching some of these woke simps, crack on dude
There is a minor version of CAGED, as well as every other conceivable chord based on the forms of CAGED. For minor, you just lower the 3/6/7 down a fret in every case. It's not rocket science my guy
So for the C form, what do you lower? And the G form? If you have a good answer I'll correct myself in a short but I don't think you do. It sounds like you're talking about inversions, not CAGED. And I don't even know what you're referring to with 3/6/7. My guy.
do you mean the 3rd, 6th, and 7th of the chord? lowering the third makes a major into a minor, but lowering a sixth or seventh is completely different. also, there aren't 6th's or 7th's in major or minor chords anyway. CAGED does not include 6 chords or 7th chords. maybe you need me as your teacher! 😀
@@BLazLessons nobody said that lowering a 6 or 7 wasnt different from lowering a 3rd, which is what defines a minor. That doesnt mean 6 and 7ths doesnt factor in as well.
I just watched one of his videos about CAGED. He uses air quotes when he calls it a "system", says it's nothing new, it's just triads.says he's just going to call it inversions (like I do) and demonstrates the exact 3 note shapes that I do in my video. I would feel fine talking to him about it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PV9c2jXIEk4.html
@@BLazLessons I’ve watched ALL of his videos, and he constantly says that the CAGED system changed his life and his playing. It’s just a visualization method, and it doesn’t prevent one from practicing inversions. Calling it goofy is just, well, goofy. 🤷♂️
@@BLazLessons Disagree all you want. If you take out a fretboard diagram and plot out all your inversions on all your string sets, the result IS the CAGED system. It’s just a bird’s eye view of what you’re doing. A way of seeing the triads everywhere all at once.
@@BLazLessons Yes, you seem to have a knack for disagreeing with just about everyone who notices how goofy your stance is on this. Par for the course, apparently.
I agree that practically speaking, inversions are the way to go. But also, I would think any discussion would include where C-A-G-E-D came from. It is based upon the ROOT notes. So if youre playing a C chord, the basic roots are on 2-1(2nd string, 1st fret), and 5-3 ( 5th string, 3rd fret, etc..). Now if you take the 5-3 note, that becomes the root for the next chord in the sequence ( the A shape), the other C root occurs at 3-5 , which becomes the anchor for the next chord ( the G shape), the other C note in the G shape is at 1-8 (first string, 8th fret..). The 1-8 note now becomes the root anchor to the next chord form ( the E shape, or Barre chord). The other C notes in that shape occur on the 6-8 note and the 4-10 note(4th string, 10th fret..), the 4-10 note now becomes the root for the LAST ( yes, last) form, the D shape, which for the most part, I agree, you would almost never use. I agree inversions make more sense, but if you know where the root notes are (by looking at each form) it helps you to know your way around the neck. When I learned this, I would just play the 5 shapes for any chord, and try to remember where the roots are up and down the neck. I find it helps me to find fills when Im playing a given song. Just remember if you play any chord in its open form, you can easily figure out the root notes. Hope my comments helped , rather than confused anyone. Keep pickin'!
at the end of the day, whatever helps you helps you, but I just don't think about the fretboard that way. for example, I know where all the roots, 3rds, fifths etc are because i play a lot, and I don't think about how the last note in one shape is the first note in another shape etc.. I actually was making another video as well that really tears caged apart, because any "system" that falls apart with minor chords is just crazy. With inversions there is no issue with minor chords. If you really want to trip out think about this: G and C are actually the problem because they are the only ones that don't have a minor version of themselves. The true shapes in a good system would be E D and A. I would say don't get me started on caged but too late lol…
WoW,… This lesson with its patient teaching style has done wonders for my guitar journey so thank you… I’m now subscribed and ready for more.. NOODLES.. UK
I inherited my brother's guitar now that my mom recently passed. She had it in her room since 1992 when my brother died. I've had it now for only 2 days and I am happy to find your lessons! I'm watching and cannot wait until I get home from work and start! thank you!!!
I’m using your video as part of my therapy after brain surgery.its slow but a little bit at a time…..4 days to get the pattern but it helps if I work toghather with you every time for however long it takes… forever grateful
Thank you, your tutorials are very helpful i have 3 days practicing and i have never played before learning from zero . I am really enjoying it and i am determined to learn, you make it understandable.
