I honestly don´t want to be a hater - but they were never that great a band. They had one major "hit" song and a lot of extremely mediocre songs. When I watched the documentary, I honestly didn´t know if I should feel sorry for them or laugh. They got another 15 minutes of fame after the documentary came out, and mostly because people were caught by nostalgia. But please don´t tell me they are a great band. They are mediocre at best, and there is a reason why they NEVER really got any major success in the 1980s
It´s been 13 years since the movie came out and yes, maybe Anvil is still not playing in front of thousands or selling millons of records, but they play in ballrooms in front of hundreds of people who love them, they do what they love for a living and tour around the world, they promised they would play until they got old and here they are. Man i wish i could go around the world playing my music for at least a few dozens every night that is living the dream right there

There is a business aspect to the music industry. TLC sold 10 millions records during the mid 90’s. Then on national television, admitted to being broke because they signed “bad contracts”. And this was immediately after receiving their first Grammy.
This was in 2008 now 10+ years later and nothing has changed. They are still touring in a cheap rv and still living in the same place and still whining about the music business.
Lips taught me guitar in the 90's in North York when I was around 11 years old. He was doing group lessons at a local community centre and half the time we'd just be getting him to solo and to tell us stories about touring, partying, etc ... But yeah I remember him telling me the truth one time about what it takes to work hard for the dream and that's it's not all easy living and partying all the time. He told me he did food deliveries and taught guitar just to get by, because working to make it as a rock star takes sacrifice, dedication, etc. It was a reality check for me that nothing comes easy.
The whole Metal fraternity should bind together and promote them and have them tour our countries for a last hurrah and pack the fucking places out to the ceilings and give them the respect they deserve??? Fuck Metallica I'm over them whinging wankers
Sad things is, to reach the highest plateu, you have to be an asshole. Maybe these guys were to nice for sucess. I mean look at the superstars ... Those are not nice. Nice musicians lose. For every KISS, there are one million Anvils..
That's not entirely true. There are plenty of big rock and metal artists that are down to earth. In fact, they're the MOST down to earth, compared to other genres.
People call this inspiring bit out always strikes me as 2 idiots that are obsessed with becoming rich and famous. There's nothing charming about wanting to be famous. It's great that 2 friends can still write and jam together, but the movie is extremely depressing because of how many people think it's inspiring. What does it inspire people to do? Give up on developing any useful skill that could get you a decent job so that you can chase fame? The story of Necrophagist is inspiring. Muhammad Suicmez wrote 2 groundbreaking albums then left music to become an engineer for BMW. He has far more talent than everyone who has ever been in Anvil combined. He made it much further than Anvil, then switched career paths because he was more interested in being creative than being famous.
Bless them. At least they’ve got recognition for their belief in themselves and metal. I remember seeing their name at the bottom of the heap somewhere back in time such as Reading Festival or Monsters of Rock and thought only “ Weapon “ was a cornier name for a Heavy Metal band...after all “ Bad News “ were a genuine parody but Comic Strip could’ve thought of a more metal sounding tag....or Perhaps they’d have met with resistance or worse from an actual-outfit using a generic metallic description of their sound. “ Tank “ were great anyway . Love from Paul Wellers’ Plumber 😎
@Tom Powers the one time i could've seen them was last year but their gig got cancelled and the 2nd closest place was a 21+ venue (i was 17 at the time, 18 now)
