@@worldpro1493 1949 - Upcountry Tamils were disenfranchised and many deprived of citizenship. D S Senanayake introduced the Ceylon Citizenship Act of 1948, the Indian-Pakistani Citizenship act of 1949 and amended the parliamentary elections act in 1949. All Tamil MPs opposed the Ceylon Citizenship act, but GG Ponnampalam supported Indian-Pakistani Citizenship act to protect his minister position. All other Tamils MPs opposed this act as well. However as Sinhalese had majority in the parliament they didn’t have any difficulty in passing both Acts. As a result of GG Ponnampalam’s support to the government, SJV Chelvanayakam left the All Ceylon Tamil Congress and started the Federal Party which quickly became the main Tamil political party. Meanwhile the number of Tamil MPs in the Parliament were nearly halved. 1949 DS Senanayake commenced the Gal Oya Irrigation scheme covering a very large area in the Eastern province and settled majority Sinhalese in this traditional Tamil Muslim Province. This scheme increased the proportion of Sinhalese population in the Eastern province from 8% at independence to 23% in 2012. 1956 - SWRD Bandaranaike was elected on a wave of Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism. Sinhala was made the sole official language and other measures were introduced to bolster Sinhalese Buddhist extremist sentiments. 1956 - Gal Oya riots, was the first organised violent riots against Tamils in Sri Lanka. It began with anti-Tamil rioting in Colombo. The worst of the violence took place in Gal Oya valley, where the Sinhalese colonists and employees of the Gal Oya Development Board commandeered government vehicles, dynamite and weapons and massacred minority Tamils. It is estimated that over 150 people lost their lives during the violence. Total deaths in Colombo and Gal Oya was estimated to be 200. The aim of the riot was to push the Tamils and Muslims from Gal Oya. 1958 - The island wide anti-Tamil riots by Sinhalese mobs in many parts of Sri Lanka. This island wide riot against Tamils is also known as the 58 riots. According to some account about 1500 Tamil people were killed. Thousands of Tamils were displaced. 1959 - Prime Minister Bandaranaike was assassinated by a Buddhist monk. 1972 - Ceylon becomes a republic and changes its name to Sri Lanka. Buddhism is given primary place as the country's religion, further antagonising Tamil minority. The protection for Tamils and Muslims under article 29(2) of the Soulbury constitution was removed. 1977 - Anti-Tamil riots by Sinhalese mobs and police started when Police opened fire in the predominantly Tamil Jaffna district. It spread to many districts in the Southern parts where Sinhalese predominate. According to the Tamil leaders estimate a large number of Tamils were killed and more than 200 Tamil women were raped. 1981 - Jaffna library, the Tamil people’s treasure was burned down on June 1, 1981. It was organised by state sponsored Sinhalese mobs and Sri Lankan security forces. Some leading government politicians were also involved in it. At the time of its destruction, the library was one of the biggest in Asia, and contained over 97,000 books and manuscripts. There was also violence against Tamils orchestrated by the Sinhalese dominated police force in the North, East and upcountry. 1983 - By 1983 Jayawardene government had heavily deployed army and police in Tamil areas. Fledgling LTTE was trying to find its feet. The government was arbitrarily arresting and torturingTamil youth with the hope of stamping out the LTTE. LTTE retaliated by killing 13 soldiers. The Sinhalese government used it to kill, destroy houses and businesses of Tamils in nearly all parts of Sri Lanka. The Sinhalese mobs also raped and killed many Tamil women. Estimates put the number of Tamils killed at 3000. About 150 thousand Tamils became homeless.
