what makes this game great is the fact that if you're starting off trying to be as kind and as nice as possible, trying not to kill or sacrifice your people ecetera, but at somepoint the cruel reality will hit you. it's impossible to survive without doing some absolutely horrifying stuff. the game pretty much forces you to do it, there is no other choice, because the city must survive at any cost

-150°C. The closest thing we have to such temperature in the real world, is liquid nitrogen. You go out in this cold, your vital functions will end in seconds. Poke your naked hand out the window for but five seconds in this climate, and there will be no saving it, you will need to amputate it. At -150°C, even the CO2 freezes, on a city powered by coal. The very hot air from our chimneys condenses and falls to the ground as soon as it enters in contact with this cold. If a storm like that were to truly happen, it would even freeze the gasses on our atmosphere. Our very sky would begin to rain down on us. Let me make this clear: this storm is a nightmare. And no matter how you did it, if your city did not fall, you worked a miracle. If people can judge you, it means they're alive. You saved them, even if you had to lose yourself. Even if it demanded sacrifice. You made the tough choices no one else would, and because of that, the city, and humanity as a whole, have a second chance. If you've done everything well enough, the automatons will work the mines and the greenhouses when the storm hits; everyone will have a roof and four walls to protect them from the cold, and the houses will be insulated; the hospitals will function through the storm, because people WILL get sick; your stockpiles will hold. Laws will remain humane. The city will survive. If you made a mistake, a single mistake, if you spent on something out of turn, if you didn't call for that extra shift, if you took too long to find a steam core, if you researched a technology too soon or too late... a cascade will begin. The cold will find your weakspot, It will expose the cracks in the walls, widen them into fissures, and attack them relentessly until, one by one, the systems fail. It starts with production. Then, with your stockpiles. And ends with the lives of your people. Unable to keep the city running, the generator dies. And at this point, there's nothing you can do. Nothing you can build, nothing you can research, no law you can pass, no overdrive you can turn on, no prayer left, no hope to be had. All you can do is watch as the last fires go out. And the city falls.

I live in Siberia, Russia. I remember playing this game when it was -60 degrees Celsius outside. When the Storm started in the game, I opened the window and the cold Mother-Siberia burst into my room. I swore that I would survive the Storm with my people, because I am the Captain of this ship and I will go down with him if necessary. It was cold, supplies were running low, The City Must Survive were blasting on a full volume, and I was sitting in front of the monitor and freezing. I literally started praying for the Storm to end (so I could close the window, lmao) And finally... the Storm stopped. We did it, we survived, the City made it! I closed the window and started smiling. The City survived, though not without losses. As Captain, I thanked all the remaining citizens for their steadfastness, I apologized to the dead for not saving them, saluted the City and turned Frostpunk off.

funfact: we dont actually know the estimated temperature during the whiteout coldsnap, they dont know how cold it was because all of their instruments and thermometers froze over, alcohol thermometers freeze at -114.1c/-173.3f while methane barometric sensors freeze at -182c/-295.6f, both instruments froze solid. windspeeds were estimated at anywhere from 100 to 200 kph. it was so cold that even at overdrive their generators outer layers were literally freezing over (not too surprising since you're trying to fight a once in a hundred years mega-blizzard with coal power).

I am so bad at this game, but that made it fun. I'm probably the only person to wing this scenario to the point of finishing bare minimum just two days before the end while everyone was freezing and starving to death with no way for me to legalise cannibalism untill around 12 people survived and game ended. Truly a hellish experience.

What I haven't seen mentioned, and that really enhances the experience when one listens to this in one sitting, is how the change in the daily announcements say all that your really need to know. At a first glance, you see this one character, facing doom and despair. You don't know what's going on, nor the state of this universe's new London. Yet, the gradual change from "Work time, get moving To No time to waste! We've got work to do! To By order of our great leader, work shift is over, march to your quarters! " Tells you all you need to know. This simple detail highlights the absolute dire state of the city. Coal is lacking, food rations will only hold 2 days. Half the population is sick. Another quarter is gravely ill. The storm hasn't even hit us yet. The evolution of the daily announcements in this video holds so much narrative weight. You can feel the captain's crunch, his desperation at the situation. People are angry at the regime, the working conditions. Yet the city must survive. The captain will trade away his humanity for New London, for The City Must Survive This video is actually a masterpiece

i had chatgpt write about frostpunk... i wish i could write this well: A NEW EDICT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED! The city’s frigid silence is broken by the sharp crackle of the loudspeakers: “Attention, citizens. A new edict has been passed. Public works will now prioritize industrial efficiency over residential heating. Resources will be redirected to expand the coal mines and increase production.” You stagger through the snow-covered streets back to your quarters, each step a battle against the biting wind. The generator’s dim glow, visible through the cracks of your tiny home’s walls, barely pierces the enveloping darkness. Inside, your partner remains at the worksite, laboring tirelessly to fortify the generator against the relentless blizzard. The recent storm has left its mark with brutal efficiency: three of your neighbors have succumbed to the merciless cold, their bodies found too late to save. Four others lie in the makeshift medical facility, their limbs severely frostbitten and their chances of recovery hanging by a thread. The once-bustling shelters are now overwhelmed, the air heavy with the scent of antiseptic and the whispers of despair. In your cold, drafty home, the biting chill is an ever-present companion. As you prepare a meager meal over a flickering heater, the warmth it provides is almost nonexistent. The sparse rations barely suffice, and with the new edict in place, even the minimal comfort of heating is a rare luxury. Your children, including young Eliza, are out working with the labor crews. Eliza, only twelve, used to find joy in small things, but now her days are marked by the relentless grind of survival. Her best friend, Thomas, had been assigned to a particularly hazardous excavation site. When he finally returns, his face is pale, his clothes torn. Despite his exhaustion, he presents a small wooden carving he made with his spare moments-a token of hope for Eliza. This simple gesture, amidst the harsh reality of their existence, becomes a poignant reminder of their enduring humanity. The city’s spirit is visibly fraying, and the stark divide between the ruling elite and the ordinary citizens grows ever more pronounced. The regime’s decision to prioritize industrial output over essential heating reveals the harsh reality of life in this frozen dystopia. As the generator struggles to stave off the encroaching ice, the sacrifices made for the benefit of the few become glaringly apparent. In this harsh world, the cost of survival is measured not only in coal and rations but in the erosion of human dignity and the toll of leadership’s decisions. Yet, amidst the unforgiving frost, small acts of kindness like Thomas’s gift serve as beacons of hope, proving that even in the coldest times, the human spirit can find moments of warmth and connection.

8:50 "Sir! We've... News. We searched all the sites that were shared to us. Unfortunately... we... we were too late. They're gone, Captain. We're... alone. Completely alone." Says the scout leader to the Captain. The captain thinks, sighing. "What about the outpost teams?" asks the captain "They're returning as we speak. Our engineers reported about 3 days left until it hits... Or less.. I- don't know." "We have to prepare more... This isn't enough to survive..." says the Captain, worried. "Captain, we are already hardworking to produce coal and food. If anything, we will live. It's only a matter of time." "What about laws? What about the angry people? The sick? The amputees?" "Sir, open the Book of Laws. You have time." "Fine, dismissed. Return to Agatha for your check-up. She should be back by today." ----------------------------------------------- **The day of the Storm** "Captain. It's time. The storm. It hits. Today. Our rations have been collected and stored appropriately. 2 out of 3 outpost teams have returned. We are unsure about the last. They were last reported at the Fishing Village" the scout announces in a checklisty tone. "God... It's time. Report to the speaker immediately. Tell the people to stay at home. Work is cancelled. We are required to live off of our stockpiles. The generator... I-..." the captain answers nervously. "Sir, you have to relax. Our prognosis stands, we are expected to survive." "Fine. We have to fire up the Generator. I already have to heat a lot of houses due to the demand of the public.. God... I don't know what to do." "Captain, we already have steam decks, you can increase their.. Uhh, power." the scout replies, the idea coming to his head. --------------------------------------------- **Day 5** "Captain, a-all of us are freezing. Our coal ran out. What do we do?" the representative asks worriedly and anxiously. "There's only one thing", the captain sighed, before opening his book of laws, "unfortunately, the only way to keep running and surviving in this city... Is by having shifts go all day. Dual shifts. Of course, we need a lot of heaters but.. I-.. Guess it's worth the price." "The City... Must survive, even if it calls to measures such as these."
