Already got Rocky around 2 days after I posted this comment. I got him from mining coals, for woodpecker you could try cutting the low level trees for a good chance. I'm sure you'll get woodpecker soon. Goodluck! =)
Gold is a waste of time if youre trying to do smithing at the same time. Just mine crimsonite through silver and gold. Don't waste your time. You need 16 ore to make a nugget, you need 20 nuggets to make a bar and you'll get basically no smithing experience for the 320 ore you mined for a single bar.
