Someone commented same thing but want to restate, thank you so much for teaching me without making me feel stupid. I paid good money for instructors to try to do this but all they did was yell at people who didn’t understand. “It’s such an easy concept what don’t you understand guys?!!?” I swear I have ptsd from this class 😂😂 but lovely great video, to the point and nice instructor teaching on the screen.
First, this is a somewhat goofy metric for stability. "80% of the data points within 20% of the mean" comes from an article by some heavyweight researchers in the field, but it is really just a way to see how closely data points cluster around the mean. Your data shows us an issue; the closer to zero your mean, the more minimal your stability envelope becomes. A mean of 20 provides for a data envelope of 4 points (+or - 2 points). A mean of 2 provides a data envelope of .4 points (+ or - .2). This makes mathematical sense, but in terms of human behavior, this is where things get goofy. If a client yells on average 20 times in an hour, that means 18 yells or 22 yells fits the envelope for stable data. But if they only yell on average 2 times an hour, then that means 1.8 or 2.2 times an hour fits the envelope. Hope that makes sense.
Can you please explain the variation non-concurrent baseline design? I am not understanding how it could be possible to "apply treatment to several individuals at delayed intervals."
I had an exam question that showed dashed lines under the data points instead of solid ones. What is the difference and does it mean prediction when its dashed?
Thank you for this great video. Is it possible that high variability will affect the accuracy of the line? I ask because I created mock data in google sheets and compared my results using this method and the trend line google sheets generates. I got a negative trend line when just doing visual analysis, but google sheets said it was trending positively. I checked it many times to make sure that I hadn't errored in the process. Any thoughts or suggestions?
You are so welcome. Well, this is a simple visual method that is generally used by readers and others that don't have access to the data. I'm guessing what google sheets is doing is a different, but more complete calculation. So yes, the two methods can absolutely differ. Also, the visual method can change dramatically depending on the choice of a data point; the google sheets method likely "smooths" things out.
This was very helpful! I often here Withdrawal and Reversal designs used interchangeably. When taking a mock exam, I got a "reversal" question incorrect because there was no return to conditions without interventions in the example which essentially would have been more so withdrawal if it did. This helped me understand the difference ! Thank you :-)
Classical conditioning and operant conditioning were one of the first concepts I ever learned in psychology. I’m currently taking a Behavioral Analysis course during my last semester of my undergrad and the first things mentioned aside from learning, behavior, neuroplasticity, and experimental behavioral analysis, is Respondent Conditioning. I was struggling to understand the textbook due to its use of abbreviated language of unconditioned, conditioned responses and stimuli, but this video helped me build a more concrete foundations to its meaning and its difference from Operant Conditioning. Hello, Dr. Carl Liapson. My name is Roberta. I am a graduate student at St. Cloud State University, and I while digging for videos on single subject designs I came across yours! They have been really helpful , so thank you for doing this. On a side note, I ran into a doubt while reading one of your suggested articles for reversal/withdrawal dessign (Carrigan et el., 1995). They say they use a reversal design, but I was so in doubt. I think this is more like multiple baseline, maybe? They aren't changing the contingencies, just using the same contingency in different locations. The behavior is taking condoms out of the dispenser, and the reinforcers are the condoms. The behavior that is reinforced never changes, and there are no alternative behaviors. I understood they said it was reversal because they reversed the locations (A then B, then go back to A, then back to B). So, I actually am trying to figure out why this article could be considered a reversal or withdrawal and I would appreciate it if you could drop me a line here. Thank you so much!

This teacher sucks. There is no reason to pick at the kid reapetedly. If the student refuses to work but is willing to sit there, then fine. Let them sit there for awhile. The fact that he forced a confrontation, plus grab the kids arm is very unprofessional. Never touch a student. Especially and angry student.

There are so many things bad about what this teacher did I wouldnt even know where to start - he has an arrogant tone and basically throws gas and wood onto the fire and lights the match. This is a terrible situation. Bad teaching period.

Thank you so much for the feedback - I will email and let my students know. I lectured on single-case last night, and taught mostly used class activities to do so... but this is a great resource for students who still aren't really getting it. I will probably use it next time I teach this course.
Thanks to you video I was able to fix my swamp cooler! I rent and they sent out some guy who looked like a cave man and he did a lousy job. The pipe they used to connect the pump to the "spider" was too short, so the pump was too high to pump the water needed, and the spider was so clogged that only a trickle came out.
Gosh Heidi; there are programs in almost every school district in the city. This competition was just the Tucson region; there are lots of teams. Some are also run by Girl and Boy Scouting Groups
