The crystals could be big chunks or lots of small chucks. Over the years I’ve noticed the overall size (once they’ve fully grown) could be big or small.

Tom Joe Diesel emissions today vs 12 years ago I don’t see the actual benefit (minus visible smoke). Perhaps less CO2/NOx. But the DPF is just to trap smoke. Then the DPF needs to regen which means you’re wasting fuel to just regen. The engine needs to be running which just means it’s producing more of a carbon footprint. So waste fuel to not produce smoke. Okay. And what’s funny is you see more diesel trucks around town today vs back then. So the diesel footprint is bigger but emissions levels today makes it look like it’s ok cause they are “cleaner” then before. Lame.

To the rest of us its the exact same life-sustaining air as it was in 1970 before legislation went nuts. But at least we are MUCH LESS productive with all our equipment being the repair shop month after month until bankruptcy inevitably follows or customers experience some massive cost inflation driven up by their idiotic screaming for government sponsored "ice-cream".
Tom Joe We’re going from “cleaner” air to wasting extra fuel to regen. These diesel emissions tiers (I think it’s now in tier 4) just creates more problems for car manufacturers to solve. Let’s look at what VW they did a few years back to beat the diesel emissions. They cheated the system until they got caught by an tech school student or instructor. It’s hard to keep up on these emissions & the Government keeps pushing out more BS & it falls into place just cause. SMH.
I like to season my box with those seasoning packs. Before I’d wipe down the inside of box & keep a small jar of water & soaked humidifier in the box for 2 days. Wiping the inside caused the wood to crack. Box was 2-3 years old. It looked like it was many years old & needs to be tossed out.
TDNomad Those seasoning packs work great. I use to season my boxes by wiping them down. Wood got cracked after the 4 time doing so. I have no clue why the instructions in 1 of my boxes said to do so, but I highly don’t recommend doing so. Just add a seasoning pack or a small cup of water & humidifier.
Daniel Phillips, Welcome to the new diesel emissions that have been in place since mid 07. It just gets worse as time goes on. The days of no DOC (aka CAT) EGR, or just a DOC & EGR are over. Either buy a used Pre DPF year diesel or try & live with the new emissions.
I read your comment on the Boveda packs. Have you been using them Long? I ask cause I ordered some &I want to know if they do work & how long did the packs last before you replaced them.
+TDNomad I've been using them for some time now. I like them. They do work. At 1st I didnt. They only lasted 1 month before they needed replacing. (I even used their seasoning packs) They didnt give off the range of RH (Relative Humidity) that they claimed. But then they became stable & worked. Its like it took time to adjust itself in my box. Before you use the packs season your humidor using the Boveda seasoning packs. Now my packs avg 2 months before they needed replacing. The packs I have in my box right now are 2 months, 2 weeks old. They still have some life left in them. I may do a video on them.
***** Guess ill be ordering some seasoning packs. I hope I have good luck with them. Ive read a few reviews where they say these do & do not work. It seems like it didnt work for you at 1st. Maybe thats why the other say it doesnt work because they didnt give it much time to "set it." Thanks anyways. If I remember to do so ill report back my finding.
I have a 25 count humidor and i've been using that tube style humidifier. My problem is sometimes the humidity can be 72-76%. The lowest i've seen it is at 60%. (And yes I do season my humidor & my hygrometer is digital & I replace the battery often.) My question is, is it ok to have the humidity at 72-76% all the time? If I do remove the humidifier tube for a few hours a days, the humidity stays around 70% for a long time.
1st make sure your tube crystal humidifier is new or fairly new. (Replace it every 6-12 months.) If it is new/fairly new, remove it & replace it with a (basic) small round or rectangle sponge humidifier. Really only add the crystal humidifier if your basic sponge humidifier isn't cutting it. Humidity range of 68-75% is more like it IMHO. 76% & above is high IMO. Yes humidity will jump all around & it's hard to just keep it at certain %. Most say a range of 65-75% is where you want to be. Some may say 67-78% is where you want to be.
***** Yes my tube crystal humidifier is pretty new. I guess that my humidity numbers aren't that bad after all. I will remove the tube crystal humidifier, & replace it with the round humidifier that came with my box. Thanks for your help.
+TDieselz 303to702 Yeah, it's fine. Just keep up with seasoning, and keep track of the humidity %. Add/remove your humidifiers when need be. Something I forgot to mention. Don't keep your humidor in a non vented room, on a window ledge/direct sunlight, or on a warm surface. That will mess with humidity. Years ago when I 1st got into cigars. I kept my humidors in my walk in closet. My humidity/temp was all over the place. Mainly around 65%. Sometimes as low as 62% & as high as 67%. Plus make sure the lid is always closed, and that the box is in good shape. Not showing any signs of wear, cracks, or holes.
***** Those are great to use. You should know 1st what humidity % range that you want/like & if you live in a dry area get a higher RH pack. High humidity area get a lower RH pack. The RH levels packs. 75) 71-75%, 72) 68-72%, 69) 65-69%, 65) 61-65%. The RH numbers come in 62, 65, 69, 72, 75, & 84 RH. The 84 RH is really only for seasoning use. They last 2-4 months. But you can recharge them. Look up how to recharge them on. Its real easy. Wooden humidors Boveda packs needed based on humidor capacity. (1 pack for every 25 cigars.) Boveda Packs - Humidor Capacity 1- 25. 2 - 50. 3 - 75. 4 - 100. 6 - 150. 8 - 200. 10 - 250.
Are you talking about the humidifier fluid solution? If so, yes you can, but using regular distilled water is much cheaper, & easier to find. Humidifier fluid solution is mainly to help acclimate/maintain the humidity.
Had mine run out of DEF once also, the computer said will be in limp mode upon next restart, I just left it running. Probably totally negated what the DEF had done.
I have a question about bringing back 20 year old cigars. My box has a temp gauge and a brass circle where I have a sponge cut up for now then I took a small metal miniature bread pan and lined it with cotton pads and cotton then pads on top and then added distilled water then plastic wrapped it then poked several holes in it. Will this help? Thank you.
Very helpful. I've got a desk top humidor on the way and I've been researching on the web as to what type of humidifying device to put in it. Watched your vid, went to their site, found that my local smoke shope carried their stuff, problem solved. Thanks for posting this. Dave
Easy and simple instructions, one of the best videos in youtube. I don't think you need to damp the humidor with distilled water, this method is good enough. Just make sure your hygrometer is calibrated, check humidity and charge your humidifier as needed.
I'm new to cigars and I am waiting on my humidor, just thinking when I get the cigars in the tube or wrapper, do I keep the cigars in the tube or wrapper whilst in humidor??? Cheers
Just got my first humidor. How long will it stay at 70-75 for? Also, if it drops is it okay to put the jar back in while cigars are still in the box? Please reply thanks.
Soot is captured and burned into what? Don't know couldn't find out what it goes too. The DPF captures the soot and burns it even further. Not a fan of it either the new emissions engines just don't sound as good as the pre-07 DPF mandated engines. As much as I hate it too, it's good for our health and the air we breathe.
