I remember that promise when my parents immigrated from Germany. A father who grew up during the Great Depression and had to march in a war for the side that hated the Jews. We ended up in Canada and he really enjoyed haggling with Jews in Kensington Market. An immigrant could not share their old world cultural shopping practices in places like Eaton's. Canada was a place of peace and hope for both peoples, a nation that was an example to the world back then. That's not what I'm seeing on the streets with 9 years of Trudeau.

Using the 401 corridor as a transitway is dumb as there is already one along Sheppard. If you really want a full subway just build out the Sheppard line that may carry more people than the current stubway. As far as a bigger east=west highway goes, the 401 is already huge. The 407 is not that far away and as much as people hate the tolls they are what keeps the 407 a less congested route. What should be done is to construct new east west routes to add to the 401 and 407. Start by extending the coming 413 east of its current proposed terminus at hwy 400 across the top of metro all the way to Markham and further. And to the south, expand the Gardiner Expressway to 5 lanes in each direction and complete it through as the Scarborough Expressway to the 401 in the east. Also, I don't like driving in tunnels. The issue of what happens in an accident is why. On the 401 if there is a terrible accident and you''re not involved you can at least run away from the exploding vehicles. Not in a tunnel. Also the potential for a terrorist attack in a tunnel is quite frightening to even consider. Tinker with the 401 as much as possible, build out the Sheppard subway, build and lengthen the 413, and expand the Gardiner and finish the Scarborough Expressway. I say do the study and then go from there. While trudeau continues to stuff millions more people into the country, 95% of which will live in the GTA, something needs to be done. I am a professional engineer. I think that the gov't should evaluate the possibility of an overhead highway, similar to the Gardiner Expressway, over the 401. It would double the number of lanes. One option would be to prohibit trucks on the overhead highway. That would allow for a lighter structure and make the overhead more rapid. The overhead could have limited entry and exit points which would also improve transit time.
