Sea hares have a pinkish purple coloured ink. It is pretty cool. There are a lot of sea hares at the south african coast. I accidentally stepped on one and I saw it's pink ink.(he was not harmed)

Can't say i've been to a lot of tide pools, but i've seen a number of anemones and snails, and the ones shown in the video have been the most unattractive ones i've ever seen or even imagined possible. I think i'll just stay inside.

When i was in high school in late 80s in the spring time after big storms the beachs would have many dead and decomposing gumboot chitins. Haven't seen washups like this for over 20 years. When breeding they move into shallow water where storms can wash them up. They cut out the foot and pounded with a rock to tenderize before cooking/eating. The first nation people's utilized them as food. The butterfly plates are found in the shell middens or aboriginal food refuse piles around Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur.

That's the old Pacific Grove city raw sewer pipe going out to ocean. The pipe was discontinued by the 60s and a sewage treat plant replaced it.

I grew up on Monterey Peninsula and recognize this spot as Point Pinos, Pacific Grove. The island is only accessible at low tide and the shells on island Beach especially after big storms is fruitful. I have found empty shells of the giant keyhole limpet out there after big storms.

Here in Monterey Bay the sunflower star is locally extinct. The urchin barrens are evident. When I was in high school in late 80s I distinctly remember on Carmels main city beach at minus tide a GIANT sunflower star near the size of a small wagon wheel! This is no exaggeration! It was stranded on the sandflats by the outgoing tide. It was around 1988 as I recall. I wish I had a camera!

3:58 Hopkinsia rosacea. Fortunate to see more than one as nudibranchs have disappeared in many parts of California. Anisodoris nobilis or "sea lemon" nudibranch when you handle them out of water they release a strong penetrating fruity odor! Reminds me of juicy fruit gum smell × 20

Lovely finds :) Looks like a decorator crab, kelp crabs’ carapaces are usually more barren with a little fuzzy algae maybe. And the small pink chiton is a lined chiton, while the larger greenish chiton is actually a woody chiton :)

The "mystery animal" at the end is likely some species of 'Sea Squirt', the individual shown being freefloating, as primarily sea sqiurts are found glued to a surface. They are somewhat related to tunicates, and are likely our closest related invertebrates to vertebrates ourselves.

Haven’t seen the adults in Oregon where I usually go clamming in netarts, but hope is on the horizon. While wading through the rocky kelp area during low tide we spotted multiple baby sun star. We didn’t get any pictures as we are not trying to disturb them, it definitely nice to see them not waste away.

So glad to see you take us to interesting places! As a Califonia Native who does their best to learn about the ocean, I'm really surprised that this is the frist time I'm hearing the lack of sunflower stars contributing to the "urchine barren problem". I feel like urchin barrens are always brought up in the context of the lack of sea otters, and that it mostly took place is the 1850s. Very interesting to learn that in addition to the what ever effect the lack of ottters has, that much more recently Sunflower stars were also important.
@nudibranchnerd
@nudibranchnerd 2 месяца назад
That’s so true, it’s a common misconception that sea otters are the only animals controlling urchin populations but in reality it’s a much more complex situation. Thanks for interest and care! This is a very important subject.
