LOL Bacon’s character thought he COOKED with that line of questioning, too. And then, “Point out in these SOPS where the mess hall is… wait, it’s not in there? So you mean to tell me you’ve never EATEN at Gitmo?!” 🤣🤣💀 Even Bacon’s character sat there like, “Goddamnit… that was a good comeback.”
I don’t understand why Kevin Bacon’s character went into this line of questioning. Was he trying to establish that there was no obligation to follow Code Red orders or what?
Love Kevin Bacon’s expression at the end of this scene. He knows his antics with the books got shown up and he can’t hide his amusement at, and admiration for Kaffee afterwards.
A couple of questions were never asked in this movie. After Kendrick and Jessep testimony Kaffee should have asked Barnes who gave you the code red and have you ever been ordered to give one., called each of the men from the platoon and asked who gave you the order in testimony. Not all the servicemen would lie on the stand. When it was found out by the service men that told the truth that Jessep and Kendrick were lying that would be the end of this whole trial.
He was trying to cast doubt on the idea that "Code Red" was Marine Corps policy (albeit an unofficial one) because it wasn't in any of their guide books.
(Daytime at the court room 👨⚖️) Jeffrey Owen Barnes: (stating his name, rank) Corporal Jeffrey Owen Barnes, 🇺🇸 Marine Barracks Windward, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba 🇨🇺. Danny: (talking to Barnes) Cpl. Barnes, name some reasons why a Marine would receive a Code 👨💻 Red. Barnes: Being late ⏰ for platoon
One little detail I like, I that all the marines talk about chain of command and respecting the code. Corporal Barnes outranks Dawson, yet he’s still afraid of him and his willingness to stick up for the weaker men in the troop. Goes unnoticed but says a lot about Dawsons character without saying it out loud.
3:17 the faint little smile on Ross' face as Kaffee walks by screams "well played my friend". that's one of a couple things I liked about Ross, in that he wasn't taking the case personally or being unnecessarily antagonistic. he was doing his job and following the law and court procedures to the fullest extent of his duty. he himself believed that Dawson and Downey didn't deserve prison, but he still had a job to do. so he had no problem with Kaffee(with whom he was legitimately friends) getting one cleanly over him in court
Sorkin is rightfully lauded for his great rapid fire dialogue, but his best skill is his ability to find ways for his characters to say “I love you” clearly, without ever saying the words. Leo talking to Josh about the guy in the hole. Jed telling Charlie is he ever lies they’re through. Donna saying she’d run through red lights for Josh. Toby telling Sam he wants to stand beside him while he’s getting creamed in his election. Casey telling Dan he wouldn’t trade the last 10 years for anything. I could type a hundred more. He is fantastic at it.
So CORPORAL Barnes didn't do anything to Santiago because LANCE CORPORAL Dawson wouldn't allow it? Lmao, when I was with 2/7, Golf company, in 29 palms, I would have loved to see a grunt Lance Corporal order grunt Corporal do something.
"You got a Code Red because your palms were sweaty... you're knees weak, arm's heavy... there's vomit on your sweater already... Mom's spaghetti." "OBJECTION. You're honor, relevance?" "Overruled. Let him cook."
Compare the different witnesses and this is a masterclass in handling witnesses. Corporal Barnes is not a direct party to anything evil or vile or illegal and is clearly forthright and honest. Neither side berates him or insults him, just leads him to answer their questions. And you can bet that if "Captain Ross" ever writes a manual or chapter about re-direct or questions about unwritten context, this scene would be the framing device for such
