Hey! My name is Jessica Webb, and I've been a licensed nail tech since 2013. I'm currently in the process of opening my home nail studio. If you'd like to keep up with the progress, I'll be documenting it on my Instagram, @lunamothnails. Thanks for visiting my channel, and I hope you find it inspiring!
I really enjoyed this video and technique. So I got some foil transfer stuff and gave it a try. What I ended up with is not bad at all, but I wouldn't say it looks like an opal; more like milky quartz, and one of my thumbnails -- which was actually the first one I did, my right thumb so I had to do it with my left hand -- actually looks exactly like white marble! So they look good, even if not the design I was trying for -- opals, because my husband just gave me an opal necklace and earrings for my birthday in May. So I'll mount some of my fake nails to the the little magnetic stands and keep trying! This technique is much easier than any of the other ones I found for opals, and I already had everything I needed for it, except the foil transfer stuff. The main problem I keep having is making the nail too thick, from all the repeated coats. If I wanted to get a thinner coat, would it help if I dip the brush in acetone before dipping into the color?
Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply! I’m glad it was helpful! As far as using acetone to thin out gel, I’m not sure how the gel would interact with it. It’s possible it would negatively affect how well the gel cures, but I’m not super sure. I’ve never tried that before. I guess it’s something you could experiment with. Just keep in mind that incorrectly/under-cured gel can eventually lead to overexposure which will lead to a lifelong acrylate allergy.
Thank you so much! Going forward, I’m planning on doing two versions of each video, a full-service one and a “just the fun parts” one. 😁 Keep an eye out for more like this.
Wow this is such a different way of creating a gem stone effect. I’ve never seen people use foils before. It’s absolutely stunning. Truly a thing of beauty. Thanks so much for sharing this with us
It is pretty hard to tell with the holographic foils but the side that is less shiny (and sometimes a little less holographic) goes on the nail. If you accidentally put the wrong side down, that’s ok. It won’t ruin the foil. Just peel it off, flip it to the right side and apply it. I’ve put the wrong side down many times 🤦🏻♀️ but it always turns out fine in the end.
Because of the time and all the layers and products used, I personally would charge $10-12 per nail just for the design. That’s not including the base cost of enhancements or gel polish. I recommend breaking down your own product costs and time spent on the design to come up with a price you’re comfortable with.
@@lunamothnails oh absolutely..I've been a nail tech for 32 years but got very burnt out and let my liscense lapse, I was slammed every day for years but I was in downtown Charlotte NC, all banking woman and very conservative so I never had the time to learn nail art or design..so I got my license back this year and have been learning the more advanced techniques, but not sure how much to charge, especially since I'm not 💯 just yet, plus my timing is still not on point, so I just needed a starting point..the ladies I have started doing would love this so much...sorry about the life story 🤣, just trying to learn all I can. Even if you get burned out by doing nails, keep doing them on some level because you will loose your edge, I never thought I could loose my ability as I was on competition level as far as acrylic application..it's taken me a year just to get back to an ok level...anyway, thank you so much for answering me back, I love your work, God bless you always 💗
I know this video is a yr old…but…my sister just gifted me some opal earrings and I was looking for an easy, not too bulky opal nail tutorial, I found it! Thank you, these are beautiful and something I can try on my clients too☺️
I received this set from Amazon yesterday. I found if you use a gel polish in a black colour underneath then a no wipe top coat it gives a mirror effect. Also wiping the nail with isopropyl alcohol after curing helps the product adhere better. 🙂💅
How lovely is that💅🏻👏🏻 I love layering and if you have the patience it’s worth the outcome. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this beautiful nail art and adding some much needed sparkle to our lives right now 🥰🙋♀️🇬🇧 Have a lovely Christmas 🎄
I've tried this. It is glorious and great. Bless you. Thanks for this tutorial. I have a transparent pink that I will try adding in to make a pink opal nail. Thank you again 😊
This is by far the most realistic looking opal nail Ive seen and I just finished mine thanks to this tutorial and they look magnificent! Thank you so much!!!!!
Credible opal! Layers are important. Thank you. Such good work! The only tweak I might add would be to use some hard gel "builder in a bottle" on top and then file and buff to even up the final surface. Could also use it in an intermediate layer to add more depth..
