Donald Herbert-Holmes.....the highlights for me of this archival compilation , are without a doubt the 1930 vocal trio from I Lombardi, with Rethberg, Gigli and Pinza....as well as the 1920s recording of Solenne In Quest Ora, from Forza....by Gigli and the legendary bass Tito Ruffo...thank you.
The bow technique is a great deal superior to any actual living violinists . Also, the left hand vibrato is unique and the articulate phrases so clean. Of course, the slides are an essential component of that era ( Heifetz used them a lot).
I received this very same album back in the mid 1970s, when I was just a teenager, and I loved it the very 1st time I heard it. It is one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed. Thank you for posting this absolute treasure!❤
Amazing how the guys were able to make such soulful and swinging music with the technology available 100 years ago. Bix and the band were brilliant! It´s wonderful to be able to listen to this music in 2024.

I love the way you kept in the side breaks. It shows how listening to them back then really sounded. I have been collecting classical 78s for decades and know what it is.
PLEASE FORGIVE MY TYPING IN ALL CAPS BUT IT IS THE ONLY WAY I CAN TELL WHAT I AM WRITING! YOU HAVE HAPPILY INTRODUCED ME TO ELEANOR JONES A MARVELOUS SOPRANO - BUT I AM STUNNED THAT YOU HAVE RECORDINGS BY ERIK OLE BYE, ONE OF NORWAY'S GREATEST AND SADLY FORGOTTEN SINGERS. HIS RECORDINGS ARE VERY HARD TO FIND! BY THE WAY THE CONDUCTER ON THE COLUMBIA DISCS IS MOST LIKELY CHARLES PRINCE. THANK YOU SO MUCH: CANTOR RAYMOND HICKMAN IN FLORIDA
Thanks for this fabulous music. When CD's of the big band era began to appear, I actually missed the scratching noise from the old 78 records. This is memory lane for me.
Of course. Though I hold no connection to these tracks on a personal level like others have shared in the comments, I'm still rather partial to this Suite, Paul Whiteman works in general.
It's interesting how in the third movement the tempo is remarkable slower than what is usually played today, and also I heard a recording of Mr Hambourg playing a Chopin polonaise at a staggeringly faster tempo than what is played today. Funny how reversed everything is.
No one sang quite like Richard Tauber. A unique voice instantly recognisable. My late father’s favourite, mine too. Thank you for this although I have many of his recordings including many of these.🙏❤️
