FA7273 was my grandmothers phone number in the 60s so I used it as my ID here on RU-vid. (I often wonder why Myself) As you can see I have a wide range of interest My name is Bruce Burgess I am an Australian, male and live some 100 Km from Sydney in the Southern Highlands Retired bus driver I drive a clasic car (1958 FC Holden ) on weekends and visit different attractions as much as possible. I also love music from the 50s and 60s. Also love travelling with my little nipper caravan.
The moment you realise this footage is 29 years ago, and you’re getting old :) I have fond memories of having day trips from my home in Liverpool and going to Manly, and visiting the Manly Fun Pier, till it closed in 1989, and later the Manly Amusement Centre.
Spotted the old Lord Nelson pub on the Strand, where I worked behind the bar around the time this film was made. Loved working there, and found the locals incredibly friendly and welcoming, especially to someone pouring their pints! I think the place has become a live music venue now, which is great! I went back once years later when my band played at the Nelson. Good memories.
I miss old Sydney. It was beautiful. These reports bring the old feel back. I'm surprised how modern the production values of the news reports looked. Why did they try and stop the news camera filming? No free press in Australia back then? It looked concerning to me. Amazing recovery effort. Just shows NSW governments can move mountains when they have the will.
i did the same journey l think in the opposite direction about 88 /89 !! But from Dover Western Docks after leaving the ferry from Calais . It left Dover Western Docks about 2 or 3 AM as l remember !!
I turned it down lol, but thanks so much for all this footage. I don't remember the first three or four years of my life too well, but I have apparently been on evert type of train and line in this video. Pretty cool.
Since this time the town has changed enormously and as someone born in Deal the town centre has declined massively since 1980's. I do not come with Down from London rose tinted glasses. Deal in 2023 does not have a Marks and Spencer any more, it does not have many chains that a town needs for footfall and no shop out of town and it's doubled in size and continues to grow with 6 housing developments and another 2000 home scheme planned to Betteshanger. It's changed out of recognition sorry to say.
I love this footage. I was a Guard from 1980 to 1990 and used to love running the St Kilda/ Port Melbourne shuttles. They'd depart from platform 10 & 11 but down the other end towards Richmond was platform 12 & 13. Near the end of the platform was the pay office. Every second Thursday we would queue up and go up to the counter and show them our little medallion that had our employee number on it. Then they would count the cash out in front of you and put it in a little yellow envelope and hand it to you and you had to sign the ledger that you had received it.
2:15 Sadly #25 and #24 SMR locos are no more than rusted hulks at the Richmond Vale Railway Museum. They haven't been seen running on the museum's tracks since about 2005 or so.
Why couldn't Station NBN-Newcastle get Jim Sullivan to narrate this documentary instead of that "stuck-up" Anna Manzoni? Want proof of why she's so "stuck-up"? Listen to the pretentious way she says "railway", rendering as "rahlway". Station NBN-Newcastle did have other female presenters/newsreaders back in the mid-1980s who were *nowhere near* as pretentious as Manzoni.
Definitely between 88-90 owing to the livery on the Ostend ferry at the berth they only carried that from 1988 - 1990 whilst they had the Collaboration with Townsend Thoresen/P&O European Ferries the Dark Blue with Light blue Stripe was a livery pretty much thrown together to distance themselves from the Previous Order of Townsend Thoresen Orange and "TOWNSEND THORESEN" Name along the hulls
In 1960 , I crewed the "Adelaide" from Paringa to ECHUCA . WITH Les Telley in the Wheelhouse. I had many turns on the helm . I was only 8 years old....... and I remember being worried about the old Captain ...... He is very old , what can I do , if He drops dead ?? . Here we had an 8 year-old in the ADELAIDE Wheelhouse , worrying about our Captain . Now , that 8 year Old has plenty of white wiskers , just like Les Telley !!!
I miss the old green and yellow trams, i was reminded of the orange ones they used to have too. I dont miss the rattling creaking noises though, even for 1983 that sounded so dilapidated and old, and they kept using them right into the 90s.
My stepdad had four at one time, I don't know what he did with them I was young at the time, I loved them they were all very good looking and great running. Would like to have them back or at least one!!
