I was 10 back then and we lived in Cheektowaga. I watched a lot of WWII footage and things in Buffalo were not much different in terms of architecture and standard of living.
They used to have one of those at the fair. It wasn't all that great because they would spend most of the time loading it and then after it was full the big part would only rotate two times and then they would unload it. The line was always too long to worry with. I only rode it once or twice.
Brings back awesome memories. I was 1st man on the setup crew for the Skywheel back in 1978. Traveled with Blue Grass Shows, Murphy Brothers and Royal American Shows for a few years.
You don't see many of these anymore... Reason being that they take more time to load/unload than when the ride is in full operation (main boom also spinning)... At certain longer/larger carni venues, such as county or state fairs, the carni company would sometimes have two skywheel rides set up and connected side by side at the stationary supports...
Thanks for posting this. We lived in Toronto and my mother would watch the show as WBEN came in strong across the lake. She got some good cooking tips from the Millers. Living in Toronto was hard for a kid...we couldn't get Bosco up here!!
The image of Mildred Miller is a wheelchair was from 1960. She had broke her leg going down a spiral slide at the Fair earlier that week and did not raise her leg at the end, as she tried to brace her stop suddenly.
Taki syf robią złodzieje państw, serial kieler, i ludzie którym zawsze za mało miejsca na ziemi.. Jesteście tak ładni i piękni jak ten mur berliński i stan wojenny w polsce. I te wasze wizy. Samochwały same siebie wybrały i tak ciągle opowiadały. Do kogo jaki kontynet kiedyś należał.🙄
That was to get the momentum to flip the ride. This ride is really balance sensitive. On set up you can only put together pieces at a time. Then flip it to work on the other side. It is my opinion they are erected too much on one side before trying to flip it. It shouldn’t be that hard to flip it if you only build a little at a time. The entire wheel is cable driven and the outer wheels that hold the seats are rim drive.
My grandfather is Al Reigle. He was in the conservation building with the game warden/conservation/trapping booth for a very long time. My grandmother's name Shirley is on a plaque in there too!☺️ I grew up going to the fair, even have lived in Florida since a baby. My last visit was 2018. I miss it so much. Hope to be back soon.
