In the shop, we will be creating or attempting to create, design and repair various items. Some useful, some not so much. We will be using woodworking tools, 3D printers, electronics, lasers and more.

It’s still working great. A couple of things I would do a little differently is have a bigger container because the cat litter bucket I’m using fills up fast, put a sock over the top of the cyclone to catch fine particles and maybe run a ground wire over the tube and cyclone and ground it to the planner. Sometimes it build up a static charge that will give you a little shock.
Excellent to the point video. I am looking into purchasing this Dewalt 735X myself. One question - what does the cyclone serve as? Wouldn't it be just equally ok to dump directly into the bucket? Also will it help more if the upper port of the cyclone is connected to a shop vac? Thanks in advance for any insights you can provide.
The 735x has a fan that blows the chips out with great force. The cyclone serves as a simple way to separate the chips from the air without the need of hooking up a vacuum. You could dump it directly into a bucket, but the force of the air coming out of the 735x will blow a lot of the chip back out. If I was to do it again I would use a bigger bucket because it fills up fast and I would put a sock or simple filter over the top to catch any finer particles.
I do not understand the purpose of the Chinese made cyclone on top. Cyclones are typically to protect a filter from clogging by removing the larger chips from the air before they can reach the filter. Simply running the hose straight to the bucket would probably work a little better. It seems to be an unnecessary addition since there is no filter to protect.
Great idea! I’m doing this. Best I’ve seen yet for easy dust collection. Thanks! Btw there’s another video where a guy put a sock over the top to catch any remaining dust
You don't need to set any material thickness if you use the auto-focus? New to this, and watching another person's videos they say you need to know exact thickness of the items, i.e, how far the surface of the item is from the honeycomb tray.
When the machines first came out, they had issues with autofocus. Setting the thickness was a quick work around. The issue was fixed a while back and autofocus works fine. Thanks for pointing this out, I should do a follow up video.
Yes. It allows me to see the coaster much easier than if I set the coaster directly on the honeycomb tray. You could also use a piece of paper or nothing at all.
Excellent video! Wife just got one of those units, we were really taken back by the sheer volume of chips they can make, so we are absolutely going to have to follow your example! Also like the low profile for saving space when not using it, we have the same problem. Thanks for taking the time to post and look forward to seeing more of your videos!
Same setup, built Tommy’s One Minute Workshop version. Problem I’m having is blowback out the front of the planer. Config is same as yours, cyclone is open at the top, captive bucket underneath the cyclone. Seems the cyclone causes too much back pressure. Try it with hardwood, like a cutting board, to really see the blowback. Verified the chip ejector path is unobstructed. Even tried a config with chip ejector impeller removed, with (and without) vacuum pull on top of the cyclone. It’s a little quieter this way, and definitely less blowback but still occurs. Compare that to just using a big DustRight bag with the chip ejector - no blowback at all. Wish I could emulate that somehow in this compact footprint.
Yes, same setup as Tommy’s from One Minute Workshop. I do get a little blow back in the front as well but not a whole lot. I’m also using mostly pine and not hardwoods. I’ll have to give that a try and see if there is a difference. The problem could also be that the diameter of the outlet on the cyclone is slightly smaller than the outlet on the planer which could be the cause of the back pressure. Thanks for the comment. You’ve given me something to think about
Perfect table I am totally going to make mine now. I have a really small shop and am in need of a table for my planer. I just move it from spot to store it to the one table I use for everything now I have a simple solution because the other videos show these elaborate tables I don't need! Thanks for sharing!
I do get some static build up around the tube and have been thinking about wrapping it with some copper wire and grounding it to the planer itself. But really hasn’t been to much of a problem.
@@newhomerworkshop6595 gotcha. I built mine today. It has a shot vac and is on a cart for other cleanup. But use it the same as you do in this video. I got enough where there were sparks so just wanted to ask. Thanks!
Thank you! The cyclone I'm using, I purchased from Amazon. It goes by the brand name NeatiEase but there are many listed just like it, They are all made in China or somewhere near there. Here is a copy of the link I have in the video description for the cyclone: amzn.to/2TQb2Kf . They are probably listed on eBay as well, but I don't have a link for that.
The 2 1/2 inch tubing is what I had at the time I put this together. 4 inch should work as well but you’ll need a big reducer to connect to the cyclone unit.
Does the cyclone just slow down and collect the chips enough to better manage the chips? Otherwise, everything is going into one bucket so why not just bypass the cyclone and go straight to the litter bucket?
The cyclone uses centripetal force to separate the chips from the exhaust from the planer. A bucket could work if you enter the bucket on the side and exit from the center of the bucket.
I have a similar setup with my 735. I got more exhaust dust for some reason. So I hooked my dust collector up to it just to filter the exhaust air. I do have a larger can under the cyclone. Maybe that's why. Who knows.
