In fact, Andy could have escaped a long time ago, the tunnel had been dug completely more than a year before he actually escaped. But he did not escape then, because he wants to redeem himself enough for 20 years, which was reflected in his conversation (not easily noticed). For example, he said that although his wife and lover were not shot and killed by him, it was because of his character and temper, ultimately rooted in himself, so he was willing to be punished. But 'I have already received enough punishment,' after arranging everything, he escaped after 20 years in prison.~
From the first scene you're completely hooked. I'll never forget the first time I watched this as a 15 year old with my parents. We were all collectively in awe of how moving and captivating it was. It had and still has no equal. Years later one of my secondary (high school) teacher's asked some students to bring in a DVD of their favourite films and show it to the class. I brought in this. We had some exchange students from abroad who never would have heard of it. They were captivated like myself when I watched it first. Such a powerful film and everything works - the acting, dialogue, story, music, comedy, twists, villains, and some of the greatest side characters (Brooks, Tommy, Haywood). It's truly remarkable.
what's buried there? the murder weapon he used to kill his wife and lover. It was never recovered at the scene. If his escape fails, Red knows the truth. If he successfully escapes, he goes there, gets rid of the weapon and replaces it with stuff for Red.... how do you all feel about the movie now?
Excellent movie. But I always fast forward over the violence. The moral is perfect. Forgive yourself. Don't hang don't guilt. Don't exaggerate it. Red tells Andy he may have been a bad husband, but he was NOT responsible for his wife's death. From that moment on Andy is a free man. He believes red and accepts his own innocence AND his REAL responsibility. Her feelings of guilt and shame attracted the true killer.
It is a bit tricky. He hadn't buried anything yet when he was telling Red about it. He intended to bury it though as soon as he got to the hay field himself. He told Red to give him hope. He also wanted to see his friend again.
Andy: had hope, lacked purpose Red: was given hope and purpose Brooks: lacked hope and purpose You know their consequences, maybe red is the luckiest one.
The intrigued look on Red's eyes when he asks Andy what's burried in the rock and left without an answer is one of the most chilling scenes in this film. Robbins and Freeman worked to perfection.
Let it be known, this is what real love is. This degree of understanding, trust, honesty, sharing in another's pain and triumphs, not changing for another human but the other making you more of what you already are. Romance is lame, petty and does not promote mental sanity.
3:17 the tone changes instantly in this scene. Goes from mournful and reflective to straight up foreboding. The soundtrack with the piano chords sells it. When Andy tells Red to find the spot, that’s true intensity.
Shitty. Pipe. Dreams..... dear god, how did I not catch that before.... Oh that's right I haven't seen Shawshank since I was a teenager, when I thought I was clever and understood everything like my kids do now
Andy tells Red that he'll escape and move to Mexico. Red says that it was "S**tty Pipe Dreams". Well, Andy does in fact escape through a sewer pipe and makes it to Mexico!
