I remember WAAAY back when David Williams of ADV made the announcement of the license at Anime Boston. His reaction to the cheering was, "You guys are sick."
It's interesting, in these old school anime, especially the ones by Osamu Tezuka, you can really see influences from Disney and even Hanna Barberra. She could stand next to Snow White or Fred Flintstone and not look out of place.
