We are looking to relocate from Mc minnville. We are looking for a 55+ community. We are heavily involved in pickle ball and looking to join a group there to play with other active people.
I was born and raised in Bend and I raised my son in Bend..And I never had trouble with trains (actually when my son was little he would get excited when he saw the train). A lot of people are moving to Bend BECAUSE of its so called “isolation” (soon it won’t be so isolated if people keep moving here)
Bend is largely over rated. The weather here sucks and the migrants from other big cities do too. it's winter here for 6-7 months, then on fire for the rest. fuck outta here
I'm wondering what was there first. The trains and tracks or the homes. Sounds to me like you're one of those peoples that move next to a dairy, then complain about the smell.
Hi Pat! I'm the opposite of that, actually. I love Bend but believe it's best practice to be honest of potential downsides, as well as the good things about Bend and the area. And to be honest, most times I don't mind getting stopped by the train, it gives me a few more minutes to enjoy the mountains. I'm sorry you misinterpreted my messsage. I love Bend!
Hey you know where the winters are really great? Southern California! Please do the natives and I mean those who were born and raised in Bend, a favor. Re-locate yourself back to SoCal and take those tons of families with you. Adios!
Bend has been Californiaized more than any part of Oregon. It’s gentrification started a good decade even before Portland. There has been ABSOLUTELY NO CONSIDERATION for any negative economic and cultural consequences of the class colonialism by upper middle class progressives moving here from out of state.
Bend went from sleepy mill town to a high traffic, annoying tourist trap. This observation from someone who lived there in the 70s and currently lives in Redmond. Oh, and Blockbuster is awesome...just saying.
Copy that. I'm in La Pine now. Lived in Bend in 89-90. Even La Pine is set to glow up and price out long time folks. I rented a house on 1375 Davenport in Bend. Rent was 400 bucks a month, lol. I'm amazed the little house is still there and not condos.
Did you watch the entire video or any of my other videos? I absolutely love Bend. That said, when people are thinking about moving here, they need to know that there are some possible drawbacks. I feel it would be irresponsible to only talk about the amazing things there is to love about Bend. Have a fantastic October day, it's gorgeous outside today!
@@LivinginBend Sorry. That was kneejerk. I was born and raised in Bend. I graduated from Bend High. Do you know who Jack Ensworth is? Probably not.. My sister is still there. The town you know as Bend now is nothing like it was a very short time ago.
The snow ploughs here are in short supply, so are cinders. It is very dangerous in Bend in the winter because none of the neighborhood streets especially if they are on a hill have any cinders or are ploughed. I am used to snow country and the town should be ashamed of themselves for putting the residents in danger. There is no excuse for this. So where is the money going?
True on the train. Also since new neighborhoods are being built from scratch all over town, the sound from the early morning horn can now be heard more clearly (and all the increased traffic on 97).
im a million years late on this, but it just got recommended because I like watching peoples perspective on my (our) state. I grew up in Prineville and lived in Bend for years. winters could be worse, its not Fairbanks ;) but yeah, it gets early and stays cold a while, 30 degree lows from Halloween trough Memorial Day, often enough with 20 degree highs from late Jan through Feb. but its all good :) just get a snowmobile or a good set of skis and learn to love it. its WAY better than lake-effect states like Michigan and Wisconsin and such its funny being in Portland now because people here PANIC over the thought of the potential of snow, my 1st winter up here about 10 years ago we got just a couple inches and you had every street lined up with abandoned cars, it was crazy.
You are spot-on as to why people want to move to Bend. The scenery is phenomenal.........possibly better than Portland because the Cascades are easier to see from so many spots. The trees are gorgeous, but don't have the ground covering foilage that west of the Cascades gets. I live in Boise, which has doubled in size in the past 25 years also. We have vacationed in the Bend area the past few summers and love the area (much more green than Boise). Yup, houses cost too much. Property taxes are too high. Oregon state income taxes are too high. And yeah, you have sunshine, but you also get plenty of snow and cloudy, windy blistery days thrown in too. But,.......if I had the money, I'd move there. But I would bring my happy Pacific NW attitude with me.
My family came to Oregon on the Oregon Trail in 1845 and were survivor's of "Meeks Cutoff." I've yet to meet a Bendite whose direct descendants came here before 1845.
Bend used to be a great place until it wasn’t. Too many people moving to central Oregon with their entitled attitudes and rude behavior. Hunnel road is completely disgusting. The cost of rent and the price of a home make it impossible for the people that provide service for all of the rude tourist to afford to live here. Is not a good place to live anymore.
We are near retirement and wanted to know if there are nice 55+ communities (not the kind for assisted living). We are also active in pickle ball. Are there ample pickle ball courts? Enjoyed watching the video.
Great overview! =) What web site did you use to compare the cost of living in different locations? There's a lot of migrating going on around the U.S. right now, especially since working remotely is now more feasible - it's interesting.
No is the correct answer. Amtrak does not run through Bend. Chemult is a small community 65 miles south of Bend, so that's as close as you can get on Amtrak train. 65 miles up here means about one hour and 6 minutes drive time under ideal conditions. Not happening in Winter as speeds have to slow down. Be warned that stretch of 97 is very dangerous two lane in sections with icy conditions in the winter, especially between La Pine and Chemult. It is a snow and ice belt. Bend is beyond capacity to really grow much more and the housing market actually began to come back towards reality in the last 6 months, with homes losing valuation for the 1st time in recent years.
Hi mtnsofthemoon11! Although you are right, there are some that are in and above $1 million, there are a few options in the $800ks. I just looked online and there is a 3 bed, 3 bath, 2000+ square foot home that's available for $859,900. It's exciting to see over on the west side for new construction!
Thank you for the feedback and I am working on doing more of that. My goal is to do two videos a week, one where I go and tour neighborhoods and the other would be more generic about Bend and the area. Hopefully that will be helpful! 😀
Wow! Thanks for this great information! My husband and dogs are thinking about moving to Bend from Ohio for outdoor recreation of course! Looking forward to checking out your other videos.
Hi! Can you talk more about employment options in Bend? I imagine it’s hard to find a good job there unless you can transfer with an existing company. Any info on this would be appreciated!
Hi Shane! Yes, it's something I definitely need to cover because you are right, it can be difficult to find employment beyond the tourism and service industry here. Our biggest employer in the area is our hospital, but I am hoping that with some of the people moving from more populated areas might bring their business here eventually as well. Thanks for the great topic to discuss in an upcoming video and thanks for watching!
Hi Kelly! I actually love living in Bend, but find that it's helpful to be honest and real with people that there are both pros and cons of living here. Thanks for watching and commenting!
