July 7, 2020: Sandra and Cate did an interview where they said Debbie and Lou had a backstory that hinted that they had been a couple sometime prior to Debbie going to jail so, that is how Debbie and Lou know each other. That scene in the diner where Debbie says to Lou 'you were there with me every step of the way and Lou says honey is this a proposal, then Debbie say "ah baby, I don't have the diamond yet", gives a hint to their prior relationship. Oceans 8 production decided not to put any of their backstory in the movie, to put the focus on the jewelry heist
