This shot is 20X zoom on my camera. So no, it does't look enormous to the naked eye. However, at least from my personal perspective, I felt extremely small.😳😁
FOr those wondering why the trailer buckled just after the tire blew. PSI in a truck or trailer on commercial vehicles are minimum 90 psi (recommended) to a max of 100 to 110. Trailers such as vans and refrigerated or anything with a flat underside consist of two main beams around 8 or 10 inches with half size cross members, The rest of the support is the walls and most often the roof. Seeing as this trailer was obviously loaded, once the beams were heated by the fire in the trailer enough as thin as that steel is and when the tire blew from the excess pressure from the added heat, it bent/buckled and failed. Its an example of why many though the NE Patriots deflated the footballs, it was actually the cold decreasing the pressure by as little as 2 psi. Test for yourself, check your vehicles tire pressure in the middle of each season or once every three months, you can even check it before (cooled) and after (heated) at least a 10 mile drive So there you have it, lesson hopefully learned. Trust me I am an experienced truck driver (Class A) and Engineering and Science Enthusiast.
you can hear the sirens on the video and some one said "is that the fire dept" no that is the ice cream truck of course it is the fire dept I hate it when someone crap talks the fire dept when they don't know what goes on behind the scenes it is not like they live right beside you.
Huge respect to the guys who came in the Ambo , I'm assuming it's a volunteer station and y'all are firemen but took ambo to get a ride to scene although .... Maybe that's what your rescue squads look like , I only know what ours are cuz I ride it lol .... Stay safe brothers
great knockdown from beginning to end! to many moday morning quarterbacks commenting. easy to say this is what i would do when I'm sitting in a chair... they did a great job getting to lines charged and attacking the fire. some people said use the deck gun. im sorry but getting hoses on ot right away was the right choice. you have to be mobile on these tractor trailer fires. deck guns should be left for defensive operations and this was definitely offensive. long story short, well done all around from the IC who was on scene first all the way to the civilian who knew how to flake hose
Took longer to attack the WTC fires only to ind out it was not worth it, any building over a certain height takes longer to get to and fight than a vehicle fire.
This should be a good lesson that you can't just grab the nozzle, run 30 feet from the pumper, and stand and wait. Learn to deploy and flake your own lines so you can get that water quicker. Also, what's the dude doing that charged the hydrant? Supervising?
+Matthew Dietrich So you're saying that they shouldn't deploy the hoses while water supply is being established? I've been on truck 54 @ FDNY for 18 yrs, the whole house got a chuckle from your comment
This is another super intense fire on a truck cab. Wonder what makes these so combustible? Seems like some of these truck fires are way more intense than car fires and just makes me wonder why? Thanks so much for posting.
No. I said what it is AND I AM RIGHT. Fiberglass doesnt burn cause its made out of glass and did you ever see a glass bottle burn? No cause its made out of sand and sand doesnt burn. I think some people here were drinking beer or something like that and got drunk.
The steel of the frame was thin enough with the fire burning long and hot enough that it weakened the structural integrity even more when the box atop it also burned away, but the tire explosion did shake it enough to cause whatever weight of the load inside to make it bend/buckle.
I wonder if the deck gun could have had a little better reach for the top of the trailer. Excellent work just a thought on if that would have done anything. Greetings from WFD 29-1
+Mathew “856GreaseMonkey” Festoff They should have a pole with the nozel on the end so they can get higher up. Like how a selfie stick works but heavy duty and like 20 feet long.
Gotta love the ambulance driver, door is open before it stops and no seat belt. That's the 2nd leading result of firefighter deaths in this country. On my Dept. the Chief would have some very strong words for this idiot, plus a write up with unpaid time off and loss of driving privileges for 6 months. Safety first even for firefighters
juggalo537 Very true. Only low voltage wire is insulated. "Older" H/V overhead wire use to be insulated. However, nothing new is insulated. You can occasionally see this insulation hanging from the wire.
ctually modern power lines still have an insulating cover, thus why you see birds on them, the only power lines not insulated are the main/major supply/trunk lines which are so high powered the insulator would just melt off. Most residential and some commercial do have a protective insulator and seen many burn down and get SPARKY.
maybe is motor problem or what ever.. i am supose is volunteer FD,,,Great job. the drive is safe the rest truck and the trailer insurance pay that ! great video buddy ,,ty
Good video and excellent job by the fire department. Fine example that well-trained, well-led and well-equipped volunteer fire departments CAN be very effective.
Andrew Silva I can only guess but, there was 28,000 lbs or cargo (mail crates) on board. Maybe the heat from the fire combined with the shock from the tire explosion. Could also be the trailer "box" was part of the load handling structure. When it was compromised, it could no longer handle the weight. Really not sure.
***** The tyre explosion caused a pretty solid concussion, and the trailer flexed immediately. That was one helluva severe fire to reduce the tractor unit to an unrecognisable mess in such a short timeframe.
No clue. Saw a bunch of white smoke prior to the fire. Probably some sort of over heat or fuel leak. There wasn't much left that wasn't melted so, the task of figuring that out may have been difficult. Anything I would offer would be pure conjecture.
ffjsb Well, I guess everybody wanted the chance to throw some water. Looks like their crosslays are 200ft. So a lot of work afterwards. Since they had a hydrant, the deck gun could have assisted.
+JB91710 A deck gun can knock down a great amount of fire, and it's easier to lob in from the top. As for saving the contents of the trailer, most likely it's a loss and will be covered by insurance. A single FF can handle a 2 1/2" line if they know what they're doing. The basic goal is to knock down the bulk of the fire,. and then mop up with a hand line. You really can't save much on a vehicle fire, it's just putting out the fire and protecting exposures.
