After the disaster with 8, I reluctantly updated to 9 in April 2024 because 8 would no longer log into Ancestry. Then 10 was released a few months later. 10 is mostly fixes for 9. I'm done with this company.
Hi there! I do hope this finds you doing super well. I started doing this for a friend who I was helping. However, I kept it at 10 or 11 generations, and it has been running for three days straight. I knew he only wanted a smaller tree to give to some friends of his for their wedding so I hit cancel, only to see that the tree of 13000 was loaded and two of the lines had not even started from the parents. How can I start another run to add to the parents so I can make a five genertaion tree? Also, my old Roots 7 upgraded to a new version, and it does not look like yours. Many thanks for your help.
Please can we have an updated version of this for RM10? Struggling to understand what goes where when documenting sources such as Ancestry or Find My Past records. I have a copy of Evidence Explained, but I'm struggling
How do you determine the shared centimorgans of family members? Everyone in my family hasn't taken a test for me to determine that information. Am I manually entering DNA information based on potential family members that have taken DNA tests? Am I making a guess for family members? Maybe I'm overthinking this or not thinking enough, but how do I accomplish this?
Did they ever change it so that you can collaborate online with others without having to collaborate by using Ancestry? And has the merging system for Trees improved? We have large trees that need to be merged back into one and as of 7 and 8 it was disastrous to attempt to merge, creating duplicates of parents or children. Example one family would end up with as may as eight duplicate sets of parents.
It would be great if the report would show the sex of the person, so when you remove the name on the report (for the doctor's office, for instance), it would still show the sex, which might be pertinent to the condition.
It would be great if each successive criterion acted only on the results of the preceding criteria, not the whole database each time, as you mention in the example -- then it would first select Leroy's ancestors, and then from that group select only those born in New York. Hopefully there's some more explanation of the thought process behind constructing a search with this approach. I usually have to double- and triple-think multi-tiered searches anyway, and I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this!
It is wonderful that someone is finally adding the DNA into the family tree software! however don't stop improving this feature. Many people have multiple family members they have tested, and to put in everyone by hand is very time consuming and I am hoping a future update will give an option to upload from the DNA companies (something like how GDAT does it)
Where do I find the detailed videos? I must comment that your medical section is most disturbing. I do not want to use it and would like a remove button for this feature. It is very intrusive and could be used by medical companies to ramp up one's costs. I would also not want such details to be seen by other people! I am happy to have my genealogy pages public but not with such medical information contained. It is highly personal and I cannot in all conscience put my forbears medical information because they are dead. Please find a way to have an off switch for this section. My discomfort was increased by the glib manner in which you spoke about this facility. You seem to have no idea of the sensitivity of the subject.
This program resides on your computer. It is not online. This program doesn't put your data on any website unless you choose to sync the information with Ancestry. The information synced is only the information you choose to sync.
thank you so much for this video as my roots magic was stuck in a zoomed in frozen state - I now have the latest (10) version and my files are all there ... I can now add our new triplets, grandchildren - great easy to use video
Would really like to include a Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA). Even better, when you don't know the MRCA then have some way of documenting probabilities for MRCA such as probability that person 2's great great grandparents is person 1's great grandparents. Then have the ability to put in names of potential MRCA's for person 1, then be able to pull up all of the potential MRCA's that occur more than once for person 1. That could really help you find matches that point toward the same specific MRCA. Hope that makes sense.
I have trIed several times to open and start my Roots Magic Personal Historian 3. I cannot get it to open and I have received no reply to my several inquiries. I have been referred to the same RU-vid site for getting started with the Historian, but it doesn't deal with download and start up issues related to the Historian. RM10. I am becoming increasingly frustrated. 🤥

You have gone to much work in changing Roots magic 10. However,, I'm very disappointed in the addition. My research is in the 1700's to 1900's. I have no interest in their DNA, if it were available. Little is known about medical history of families living in Europe. The new program is complicated with a busy screen. The simplicity of a program is what is lacking.
Yes, go back to simple like in RM3. What is needed is ability to import/export to other programs like FTM. That would be very useful to me as I use FTM also to sync with Ancestry. Gedcom isn't useful since you loose images.
Looks good. I hope it can help me sort out duplicates better than what I have now. When you have multiple generations with the same name and they show up as duplicates but you don't have complete information one one, it's hard to determine if it's a duplicate or not. The search with the "&" may help a lot with this.
The software works on Apple computers/laptops, has for a while, but Apple tablets don't use macOS, and I don't think it would be profitable enough for them to code it for yet another operating system, with all that it entails, since most genealogists don't use tablets as their main devices. Chromebook also has a different operating system, so same issue.
Agree video is not confusing or bothering or childish. I am happy for it. I will still need to practice some of the new items, but happy and thankful for it!!!!! I have used Rootsmagic for years and see this upgrade with DNA as a beginning chapter for further upgrades in the future. Don't let these two previous negative comments bother you. That's their problem.
I don't know what is bothering or confusing nitsua803 and aram5642, but as a veteran of many versions of RootsMagic I find this video very informative and quite clear. Much effort and expertise have clearly gone into producing the upgrade. The UI is a bit unusual, but that certainly doesn't devalue the underlying functionality. I am eager to begin using some of the new capabilities. Very nice work, Bruce and team!
I think it would be nice to include DNA Haplogroup two additional fields... Maternal Haplogroup and Paternal haplogroup, with appropriate (sex-based since females will not have a paternal haplogroup) sentences.
The most confusing demo video ever! I am NEW to this platform. Not a veteran. If I had to purchase the product based on this demo, I would not. I would hope that the developer would be mindful of those of us who are new . Veterans are already sold on the program.
As the title [What's New in RootsMagic 10] indicates, this video is about new features in version 10. I expect they'll eventually release a Getting Started with RootsMagic 10, as they did with version 9.
This is great and is something that I need to start tracking. But, my next thought is that when I come across a disability noted on, for example, a WWI draft registration card, or for a chronic health condition noted on a death certificate, I want to add a citation to that document. It looks like right now the only place to mention that is in the notes.
I updated my version of Roots Magic from 4 to 9. Now I can't figure out how to add the date of birth for a person. I didn't have to read a manual to use version 4. Now I'm going to have to listen to an hour video to something that should be very simple.
I really need help here. I have watched this video twice now and it has me completely confused. The tool bar in the tutorial is different. Mine has only file, edit, view, insert, Organizer and Tools. There is nothing that tells me where I can add a story. Also none of the normal ways of copy and paste worked. I finally looked at the file category in the tool bar and found “Paste.” Is there any way to ask questions and receive answers. I have been trying to use this program for several weeks and am getting very discouraged. Thank You

Mine is currently dark blue and I'm not sure what I did to make that happen because I'm unable to see some of the icons with it being so dark. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
