I’m still using it. I put new spindle bearings, clutch coil, PTO side crank seal, gear box seals and hydraulic hoses on it. Been running mostly trouble free since then. Has about 1750 hours on it now I think.

That black stuff looks like molybdenum disulfide grease with some dirt on it but who knows.

I bought my 1600 in 1979...like operating it as much as my newer JD 4044m. I love that motor sound

What Is the numbers for the mower blades? I have the same machine. Thank you.

This is a CH25S correct? I'm having issues finding head gaskets. Mine looks like identical engine and the sticker is too worn to see exact engine model. I did a search to what engine came on a 2001 John Deere Ztrak m665 and found CH25S but even on jacksengines the model # is coming up with nothing. Thanks in advance.

@BlackDogGarage thanks. It looks identical from video . Not a lot of info on these horizontal engines with shaft on both sides. Other than videos, my JD zero turn is the 1st mower I ever seen with this style. Your video will help me a lot. Thnx again

@@dgmenace73 I have a CV730 they all look a lot a like. When I bought new head gaskets for mine, it listed something like 14 Kohler engines that use the same head/intake/exhaust gaskets as well. I highly recommend a good power wash BEFORE you take apart, trust me you will still need to do some clean up work. Just like this gentleman, the power wash makes life much easier. Good luck.

Finally, an upright model; I was beginning to think that my engine was installed sideways. Very well put together video; very informative.

I found a service manual online. Wasn’t too bad of a job, definitely check the heads for flatness, I think I would have been doing it again if I hadn’t taken care of that. Its been running good since the repair.

@BlackDogGarage mine had a sputtering hissing sound (i think that was exhaust leaking from heads). I hope its nothing more than restoring the heads and nothing in the bottom end.

Had my coolant flushed today and I noticed it splashed everywhere now I hear squeaking. Wife is pissed thinking they did something wrong but I’m trying to explain it could just be coolant on the belt and coolant is greasy so just needs to be driven till it’s dried out .

I have this tractor but it's a 1864 with power steering. Thank you for showing us the steps to change the head gaskets. A big job for me but very appreciative that you took your time and skill. The immense knowledge needed to repair reminds me to always check fluid levels and use the manufacturers required oil. Thank you.

Just put a similar cover on my 2000 Silverado 1500 and used your video as a reference as far as what to expect. Installation went great and I really like the product! I didn't buy it for the "bling factor", but more so I could have a drain plug on my diff cover for easier gear oil changes.

With the piston - the race is done hence the pin sliding. I think. Great channel you have here. We go to Delaware Beaches for vacation all the time. I saw the Cape Henlopen shirt. Hoping to get some surf fishing in.

i redid one like that ''motor was stuck'' did a great job just reringing it and honing the cyl..several times up and down each one...so far so good... liked to have heard the new numbers on the compression but i didn't check mine either everything looked fine, oil pressure went way up to around 40 and before was like 5.. Ferguson 40... ''My first'' ringing🙃

If you have not heard of the upgrade it is called "the poor man's power steering". Drop the axle out of housing and put some 1" needle thrust bearings or what ever size the spindle is on the bottom and reassemble. It is almost like power steering. You'll be tickled pink with the upgrade.

Just an FYI and maybe something to try...cage roller bearings and one washer on the lower end of the steering knuckle made a world of difference on an old Husqvarna I still have as a spare...just a thought

cranky ol command but, I bet she was stone cold at that temp. Command is one of the better modern day Kohlers there is in my opinion.

Yeah, since I took this video I had the starter off while making another repair and I found it was full of grass and dust🤦🏻‍♂️. Probably didn’t help. It had been sitting for a day or two in that weather too. I’ve definitely had good experiences with the Commands. I got this tractor used, and it must have had a hard life. It only had 250 hrs on it, but it looked like it had been overheated, taken apart, and cobbled back together. I honed it, re-ringed it and put all new seals in it. I’ve put 500 more hours on it since then.
