Some of literature's most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. They are joined by a core of original characters in a complex, frightening new narrative. Penny Dreadful is a psychological thriller filled with dark mystery and suspense, where personal demons from the past can be stronger than vampires, evil spirits and immortal beasts.
PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS is no longer available on SHOWTIME.
I am currently binge-rewatching this absolutely amazing show ❤ This scene gets me every time & that music just tips me over the edge just that bit more 😭
This intro was absolutely spellbinding. Captured the essence what it was all about. It’s really a shame showtime let this die the way it did. It could’ve done so much more by introducing more characters like the phantom of the opera, Sweeney Todd, invisible man, creature of the black lagoon. The third season felt so sloppy though still had powerful scenes. It’s really a shame.
I might be a bit late to the game, but does anyone know the performer singing Wagner's "Liebestod" Aria? It is the perfect musical accompaniment to the struggle seen between love and death in this amazing scene. It's one of the best since the love scene between Vampire Miriam and her Victim Sarah (played by Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon) in Ridley Scott's 1983 "The Hunger". It's hard to choose between the two, so I consider both to be the best "Love-Death" scenes ever in Movie History. Cheers, enjoy it!

Modern shows and movies like this look too fake, due to everything being shot digitally, and using CGI and green screen. There are simply too many computers involved.
Only eight comments for this wonderful scene. Such an incredible series. For the first two seasons anyway. It was a beautiful love-letter to Victorian gothicism.
Autopsies are performed to determine how something died. Does the subject line here imply that you think the scene failed? (I would feel obliged to disagree.)
I searched this show up after learning that my favorite childhood game Wizard101 has a character named Penny Dreadfol which is a reference to this show. She’s a death wizard NPC that you rescue from a dark cave and do paper work for.
As an artist developer in musical theatre and acting I had the pleasure of briefly talking with Patti (during the Covid shut down). What an honor. She was just brilliant in Penny Dreadful. Such a versatile actress and such a great addition to the show. Love her!
My favorite show of all time. You'll find me at Dorian's, sipping absinthe,.. feel free to join us Mr. Chandler. Us furry wolf boys need to stay together. Then a little Madame Guignol entertainment with Miss Ives, and a little tea and tarot and scones in the morning. As a Goth Victorian this is my world. I was so saddened there were only 3 seasons. Though I enjoyed Penny Dreadful City of Angels it doesn't come close to this cast. Just superb. So immersive. Love the character development, costumes, and sets. I have tons of Penny Dreadful memorabilia including several signed tee shirts and the super fun Penny Dreadful Clue game. As a concert pianist in real life you will find me Dorian's ballroom playing some sensual Debussy, Cyril Scott or Erik Satie with "boys" .. We also need to "convert" Viktor as he has had lousy luck with the ladies. LOL.
Our culture produces “Dorian Grays” everyday. We’re obsessed with youth and beauty destroying anyone who doesn’t live up to the impossible standards of beauty.
I watched this show 4-5 years around and I am watching it like it is the first time. I totally get why they ended it when they did to stay loyal to the source material but gosh I miss this show. The acting on all fronts was superb.
"Amunet girl, no much older" i always wondered what she meant by that! Who was it then? If not Amunet, then who? Satan? Also, has anyone noticed that every time she was possessed, she said things about men? "U man, u animal" 😂
Ms. Poole was annoying 😂 she was doing all of that witchcraft and doing the devils bidding to stay young when she wasn't even that young 😂 she looked to be in her 50's! Was it really worth it? I could see if she looked like she was in her 20's or 30's 😂😂 just saying!
Eva Green is Magnificent in anything she does👏. This Series is Clever, Intriguing and Not for the Fainthearted; weaving Classic Goth Horror Characters in a Single Narrative. It Pushes the Boundaries of Viewer Discretion; I can only Watch it in Small Doses.😲🫣😱
