Hello, I'm Tristan, a software developer who's been interested in gadgets, smart tech and DIY/homes - so I've loved seeing the rise in smart home technology over the past decade.
This channel will regularly post tips, tricks and tutorials covering various aspects of smart homes - especially including the Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant based platforms, (e.g. Echo and Google Home), along with Ring devices and more.

Ring is Trash. There are thousands of Chinese Video doorbells on ebay that record on your phone via the app or on an SD card at no cost. I wasted my money buying this scam product.
Was anyone able to get the Python Ring Doorbell solution working? I can't get past the setup, I keep getting an auth error but i've confirmed my pw, user, and 2fa are all correct. Assuming I'm using the correct 2fa; right now i'm using the number from "authorize a new device" since i wasn't getting a text or anything where my 2fa code normally goes
Hands down this is the best video out here on this topic! My question is for method 6 (running an etherent cable). I am running a 50 meter cat 6 cable underground from my Sky router to my outbuilding. What kind of router do i buy to plug it into. Ive heard people say access points and some people saying a basic router is fine. Just a little confused as to what would be best? Any advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks!
My plan just run out tried ti get basic plan £4.99 then when i went to pay it went up to £99 i dident proceed with payment tho im hoping it dident take money from my account still thats awful what all these corrupt companies are doing its all about making profit & they dont give a shit about there customers !
Before you buy it, make sure you have new enough phone, otherwise you gonna miss all action in front of camera (very big delay), make sure your wifi router close enough to doorbell, thats also gives delays. So new doorbell camera + monthly subscribe + new phone + extra work to get router close to bell makes it very, very expensive.
Yeah, I won't be giving ring any extra $ especially when it will just keep going up. I already have cameras & a security system with a DVR so I do need it anyways. It will just remain a fancy doorbell. Won't buy ring products again & I'll let it be known to everyone I know as well.
That was very helpful, thank you👍🏻 Do you know if the powerline adapter works if the secondary house is on a different electricity company meter? (I don't think so as it's not on the same electrical circuit). One annoying thing is that when searching for repeater or booster, internet gives results mostly for extenders that works on a different network, meaning you have to choose between your house network or the extender network, it's not the same thing, plus the one I tried was a fraction of speed, even in the same room as my router, I returned it. I think I'll use either a cable or a bridge system but it requires a second router in both cases, so the most efficient and economical is running a cable, not the easiest tho☹.👋🏻
hey, im currently using a powerline adapter from a different building, and the internet sucks, I know its not an issue with the system itself because its the same one I used in my last house where it worked fine. Id really suggest another alternative
@@samioy. I ended up running an ethernet cable from my modem/router to an access point (on the same network) , in the secondary house, the speed is now great there but I get disconnected very often in the main house, I might need to upgrade my internet service, or perhaps it's a coincidence.👋🏻
Great job. Was looking forward to seeing your kitchen with lights installed. Thank you for the video, it was helpful as im starting to get into hone lighting and im gonna in your footsteps.
Not sure if you're still active but does the RGB Hue lights let you change to the ambience color temps as well? I noticed on the top right corner there's 2 options, rgb and seems like ambience? I'd have to assume yes, but would like a confirmation to be sure
Wyze doorbell is only $47 and requires no subscription. Only caveat is you'll need onboard SD card to record but it's nice because it can record every minute of every day and not just motion detection which my old Ring Pro (2016 model) couldn't do and the camera is outdated anyway. I could see the price increase justified if they offer me a free camera upgrade but no, I have to buy a new/better camera on top of that. I've had the Wyze doorbell for 5 months now and it's been great.
I returned it before I get stuck with a bill i don’t want this all about making money the device itself should be enough for the price you pay on it so glad I returned it plus I live in a community that is toxic so it wouldn’t last long they will steal it no matter if they took your picture or not cops don’t care anymore 😜
I’m already paying for Amazon prime. Now I can’t use music because they’ve made anything half decent shuffle only! 🤬Time to cancel that direct debit and shop elsewhere. F you Amazon! 🤬 I urge EVERYONE to do the same. Only then will they take notice.
Thanks this was really helpful. Although after watching this I totally wish I could make echo sound like that funny robot helium voice you overlayed throughout this video. For some reason that was such a nice touch.
The Ring cameras are garbage. I will install at my house the CCTV I use for me shop. It is the same price hardware wise and does not cost per month. Ring, you charge people monthly for this crap and yet I cant even read a number plate, plus the footage is jumpy. Absolute crap. OH, and this is after I bought as Linksys mesh WiFi 6 ffs. I have better speed on my desktop now yet Ring still thinks the RSI is the same. Absolute trash hardware. I go into my Annke Vision app for my shop CCTV which is 10 miles away and the footage is perfect, 4K so its not my phone.
Thank you SO MUCH for clearing that up!! Really insightful. Aside from Tapo focusing on more niche products, I wonder if there's any 'philisophical' differences between the companies. For instance, does one embrace Matter/Thread more than the other? Sounds like the Kasa stuff isn't good for mesh networks, which is funny, because TP-Link sells a LOT of mesh routers! lol
I have 2 ring cameras in the front of the house on each end facing the front both cameras cover the front yard just different side how come I only get one notification on one camera for a motion then there’s time the other camera notifies me and the other doesn’t
Thank you, thank you for describing a disgusting change of service from Amazon. I pay monthly and I can’t control Alexa to do what I pay her for. Hey Alexis, stop putting songs I don’t want to listen to tracks other than what I requested. I’m discontinuing paying for this service. It’s a disservice to allow Alexa and Amazon to screw up our listening to music. Amazon, you guys need to think about all the other people who are gonna bail out of your $12 a month plan. Rip off you can’t even deliver the songs I wanna hear anymore. I hate you. I hate you, Alexa.

Ring doorbells and the like are garbage without a subscription! I just trashed it and all the shit they told me to buy and set it up as they said to set it up with the app they said to use. Without using security-compromising apps and a paid subscription, it is just useless garbage. I bought a security camera, night and day capable, for much less and use a Linux-based, open-source app running on a Linux OS on a SBC Rasperypie board connected to my PC by way of Ethernet. All of which is isolated from the internet and do not use any connections to WiFi or Bluetooth, or any other type of wireless connection. People who use any product that requires their proprietary software apps and a paid prescription are fools. They are lazy and hand over their private information and money for convenience. I do not need storage in any cloud! And I most certainly will not pay for it. I altered the doorbell camera of the ring crap and tethered it to the other cameras threw the SBC and to a conventional door chime. I have 24/7 video coverage with day and night vision and even an infrared camera. And all of it is less expensive than the ring doorbell and the other crap the company says to purchase with it. I never use apps on my cell phone! If I can not use it on my computers then I will not use them. The Apps and the information collected in the cloud are compromised. It is garbage and a scam. For the computer ignorant, technologically ignorant, and lazy people, this is the product for you. For those with the skills and an existing computer network, just do not be lazy and set up your own camera and doorbell system. This is my Beginner Friendly buying guide. If you resent this comment, that F**k you! You are an ignorant person and deserve to have your money and personal information stolen. I have no empathy for you. Have fun with your Ring crap!
