My name is Aodán Coyne. I'm from Ennis, Co. Clare on the West coast of Ireland. I'm a traditional Irish guitar teacher specialising in DADGAD tuning.
I've toured Europe and America professionally for the past number of years in the traditional Irish band, Socks in the Frying Pan. - "Best Live Band of the Year" (Irish Music Awards)
Then when Covid-19 put a halt on all the touring I decided to focus my energy on teaching guitar online.
I try my best to spread the word about DADGAD tuning and teach everything I know. So if you have any questions at all feel free to reach out, I'm very happy to help.
I also have my own solo music projects on the go. I have two solo albums released through my own label, STS Records. 'If We Only Knew' in 2015, and 'Gaps Between Stars' in 2019
- "What might very well be the best CD release of the year” (Irish American News) - “A singer capable of joining the ranks of the great Irish vocalists” (Folk World)
Would it be possible to have two signals on the transmitter? Like with a Y cable? The idea is to have one route from the table with the band's mix without bass and the other route connects directly to the d.i. from my amp, which would allow me to control the bass volume, is this possible?
Hey Aodan. I'm a late night pub player. I recently got a D18 and installed the K&K Pure Mini. I use the Tech 21 Acoustic Fly Rig as a preamp. I'm not sold on the K&K tho! Can't quit get the right balance.
All these darned chords where you have to spread your fingers over four frets. Impossible for people like me with small hands. That G chord for example. I wish you could show us some alternatives to that,
Im in deep now. Lots of work to do. But i see that everything i need is contained in the lessons. Im as grateful as i am excited. Ive been wanting to play celtic music for years!! And i had no idea where to start. Im alone in this pursuit. This far anyway. But i know that will change. Thanks again Aodan!!
I discovered you a couple days ago. I apologize for not commenting earlier. But ive been both overwhelmed and overjoyed with the scope and quality of the dadgad lessons you are so generously sharing here!! I found the three installments of the ‘skeleton’ scale on your channel. I cant wait until tomorrow to dig in to this. Ive been fascinated with celtic music. And especially dadgad guitar music. Thank you so much !!
Thanks. Unfortunately, I can barely hear the guitar because of the fiddle. I can't really hear the chords, but it does help to see the fretboard fingerings. Trying to learn dadgad.
A bit of magic which Im sure everyone figured out but has only just dawned on me (after seeing Martin Carthy) - is that if you take a guitar in DADGAD and tune the second (A) up to a C and the fifth (A) down to a G. Then if you play the exact same chord shapes as shown here but one string over (higher) you will be playing in G and have the whole of the guitar neck to do what you want, rather than capo'ing at the fifth. The sixth string is a bit redundant (Martin Carthy tunes his to a C but I leave it at D). Handy if like me, you have a short neck Parlor guitar.
jig strumming pattern is DOWN-up-down-DOWN-up-down, right? different than the kinda absentmindedly 4/4 acoustic guitar strumming i think most people do
Gary, I have a D18 with a K&K pure mini. I plug it into an ACUS amp but I think I need a pre-amp… it sounds a bit muddy. What (simple) pre-amp you think I need for my gear? Thank you.
Great. I’ve been playing with DADGAD for a while. Damh the Bard uses it a lot (I love his music). However want to do more and ultimately be able to join in when I next go to Feakle!
Nice video Amigo, do you really feel the bass amp does anything for the bass signal? I have a OC5 and its kind off synthy, no mids , no highs to work with
Hey, these days I'm using the Submarine Pro pickup and the OC3 (A lot of people think the OC3 tracks better and isn't as synthy as the OC5, but I haven't tried the OC5 myself) from there I'm now going into my LR Baggs Para DI and beefing up the bass tones with that. There was a great tip given by @David_Jackson. in the comments which I've been using for a while now - "put a cord that goes to nothing in your bypass Jack of the OC3 and you should be able to use the pedal as a mute." This saves on needing a separate mute switch which was my main reason for using the pocket bass amp. So I just cut the tip off an old lead and stuck that in the bypass of the OC3 and it worked like a charm. But, ya, if you like the pocket bass amp setup better it definitely also sound better than just having the OC3/5. It's just that the Para DI has far more scope to EQ those bass tone. Hope that helps 🎸👍
I've been using the Acus One-6T Wood since 2016. It's been great. I love having access to three channels (which I use to EQ my guitar, bass line & vocals). I can even make use of the 4th stereo channels by running RCA to 1/4 jack. It's a bit of a hack job, but it allows me to add my Stompbox (Porchboard or SPD1) into the mix, which doesn't need EQ. So it's an ideal little amp for my solo shows and you can sent the direct out to front of house. Although in the last few weeks I'm starting to hear a bit of a buzz out of it.. But, I got 8 years of good use with it being clean as a whistle. If I was to upgrade now, I'd probably go for one of the AER amps.
@@aodancoynemusicPlease explain me again what you did with your stompbox. The reason I bought also the ACUS was the 3 channels. Vocals Guitar and Stomp… how do you use a 4th channel? What you mean by bass-line? Playing bass also on it? I have many questions- hope you do not mind.
Thanks for the review. I'm a drummer and am considering picking these up for a theater production I'll be doing. One concern you alleviated is the solution of attaching an XLR cable to the stage box, then connecting the transmitter. Not surprised the head phones aren't included. So much personal preference, plus I'm sure it keeps costs down and makes it more accessible for more people. Great review!
I was learning this song off a certain DADGAD guitar channel and went looking for it and this is what popped up. This music means so much to me! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Aodan, should we be aiming to keep that same steady 3/4 strum on the melody section or is it ok for it to get a little looser there? Thanks for the great tutorial.
