I enjoy Saltwater fishing from my kayak. The fish I like to target the most are Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder. I typically like to inshore fish the marsh creeks and every now and then I will throw in some surf fishing. My current fishing kayak that I am using is a 2020 Hobie Pro Angler 360.
I guess that would depend. Mine hasn’t messed up at all since the video. Start at 1.5 to see how that works for you. May be some differences depending.
Just picked up a 171 my self and love it!! I just ordered the atlas micro jack plate. What bolt holes are you running yours at? On the transom and on the motor side
@@tpage1994 Yes, once on plane you can raise it all the way up and while idle in the shallows. Turning on plane depending on how tight the turn is with it all the way up you sometimes get cavitation
Beautiful day for fishing! Gulp jerk shad is a good one! One of my favorite winter urea is a Betts Billy Bay perfect sinker shrimp. I get the clear and quick dunk it in Spike It shrimp scented chartreuse dye. Let it sink then fish it with a twitch twitch pause.. it’s cold water trout / red candy for sure!
thank you for the video great job! Couple of questions for you can you fit our tackle box on either side of the sit left and Right ? Also how is the stablity of it ?
Thank you, I honestly cant remember. I think I just put mine under the seat but it is a very stable kayak. I know they have made some changes since I owned one so I would def recommend doing a demo on one first. I wasn’t to impressed with the tracking and turning if the older model I had. I also had 2 drive replacements which I think they have ironed that out now but I would definitely try one out first.
@@MudDuckFishing okay awesome I appreciate the response I have the same boat and I am looking to get a trolling motor. Do you think 60 inches would get in the way
@@zacharycawley1909 depends on how shallow you normally fish. I’m rarely out of 3 feet of water mostly the 1 to 2 foot range. One to 2 foot of water it will probably get in the way. I know mine does if I have to have it 6-7 inches below the water
Thanks for the honest video, I think I’m going to hang on the sidelines & wait for a ver2.0 360. It’s got a ton of moving parts which I think does not bode well for the long term future . All fine and dandy while it’s still under warranty.
So far so good. The front kick up fin is really sensitive now but that’s not just with 360. Almost 2 years but I’ll do a review in a couple months probably but I am going to warranty the kick up fin issue and see what happens.
I may do a review video but I have pretty much broken everything down in a reply if you go to my got a new skiff video. If you want read the replies from Jon jorstads comment in the mean time and I pretty much break it down.
@@MudDuckFishing how is the boat against other boats wakes? I know you said its a 5/10 against wakes but do you have to fully stop then go or do you slowly just go through?
@@XxAznVi3tTxX I drop it down to about 10-15 mph. I should have worded that differently. It will go just fine through wake but I was meaning without getting water spray. If you have no one up front and trimmed properly then you get little to no spray going wo. I usually have someone up front so I typically slow down
Do you have any problems with water coming in the back? The ping pong balls do not stop water from coming in at all, the self bailing deck only works when the boat is moving, I need to add an bildge pump and plug those holes I think, I took on a lot of water with 2 of us on the boat today.
What I did was got foam golf balls and put a rope and a washer to through that way they are easy to pull out. The scuppers work great when they are under water. What’s happening is water splashing/waves bringing water in because the scupper isn’t fully submerged to push ball up and seal.
I have the 54 terrova. It really depends on where you are going to be fishing. I’m mostly in 2ft of water and don’t deal with boat wake. If you are going to be doing a lot of your fishing deeper 60 will be better. I just don’t have a lot of motor in the water being so shallow so I didn’t want a lot out of water having to cast over if that makes sense. 54 all the way down im still good in deep water and big wake from boats. It really up to you.
Sometimes I do but rarely. The 55lb is great for where I fish. Spot lock is no problem at all in all currents but real heavy current and going against it you sometimes have to use like a level 5-8 speed setting to fish it. Flats .marshes, and normal shorelines that are out of main high current channels which is 95% of my fishing areas I never have to go above level 3-4 while fishing and I'm mainly in the 2 setting. If im moving to a new spot within that area and go to level 10 it scoots you along just fine. I also keep the boat light weight and use a lithium battery for the trolling motor, that saves 52lbs from what I had alone.
@@MudDuckFishing Thank You. Been looking at getting the same boat. In the same kind of situation. Fish from a 14' Jon Boat and looking for something bigger. Carolina Skiff isn't making a small flat bottom skiff anymore and this is the best alternative I can find. Want to put a trolling motor on it and wasn't sure what size.
@@marshallnixon165 I was going to go with 80lb but I don’t fish in direct current very often. It does do okay in heavy current but if you do happen to fish in direct current often the 80 may be a better option for you.
It’s an old one but I think I have several decent blowups that couldn’t make a full video. I may see if I can find some more and post as shorts. It’s really hard for me to not use a topwater when you get moments like that.
I'm looking at one of these this weekend and want to ask what ya think after a couple of years use. I'll be in the Northern tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay for crabbing and wondering how it does in a slight chop or with the big pleasure boats flying by. Thanks
I will say I absolutely love this boat but in heavy boat traffic it is probably a 5 out of 10. But I bought this knowing that though because I fish very shallow 90% of the time. I basically take this everywhere my kayak goes and have no problem in 6-7” of water with the trolling motor and with my jack plate on plane 9-10inches. If you need to get through the shallows worry free to place pots this is a great boat for that. With that being said we do use it for sand bar hopping as well but we never go on weekends because of the traffic and having to slow down every 100ft. If you are never in a hurry with boat traffic and plan of being around 10mph or less wake is fine. It does well in chop but is very rough which is to be expected. With the 50hp I get 34mph average trimmed out and with 4 people around 26-28mph. All in all I do love this boat for skinny water and weekdays making long trips but I try to avoid traffic. If you have any more questions I’m happy to answer.
@@MudDuckFishing Hey thanks! I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on this one. Definitely will be a upgrade from my 15' semi v bottom boat. I'm usually good til about 10 am before the big boats fly by, but not sure how far into the Bay I'll wanna take her. Thanks for the reply 👍🏽
Tracking is shit. Love the boat. I put a soft cooler in the front hatch. I never get to it on a day trip. Basically, I never have to use a paddle. My last yak was a 3 waters big fish 120. Could fit a cooler and a crate, but it was shit in the wind. I’m still trying to love the yak, just wish it would drive straight.
I think that boonedox makes an after market rudder for it now. Im not 100% but if you look it up on their site or just a google search I think some company made one if it wasn’t boonedox
I went from an outback to a PA12. I love the PA12 except for a short dude, I can barely reach the pedals. (Even fully adjusted) I'm surprised Hobie never made the seat adjustable. I'll probably go back to an Outback when they upgrade to the 360.
Great job man! Gotta quick question.. how do you like the 171 coastal skiff so far? I’m seriously considering buying one but there isn’t much in terms of reviews for them. I enjoy watching your videos!
Shallow water 10/10 I take this everywhere I take my kayak and can still use the trolling motor. Sometimes I have the trolling blades a little out of the water when necessary but 80% of the time no problem. I get about 34mph by myself with the 50hp and about 27-30 with another person. I do have a jack plate though which helps with varying the speed a little. Also with the jack plate and on plane I can go about in 10 inches of water. Long distance with boat traffic 6/10 it doesn’t do well at speed in wake or very rough chop. Slides a lot when turning at speed but with some experience it’s easy to counter. I love it for the fishing I do because I’m in 1-3ft of water 90% of the time. I would say this is a perfect boat for skinny fishing but if you fish deeper than 2ft the majority of the time I would recommend the coastal flats 195 it is quicker and handles wake, chop, and turns a lot better.
Really appreciate the video man! This fixed a lot of my issues. This might be universal on all 360 but it seems like my 360 handle is quite tough to turn my whole 360 drive, do you have that issue as well?
I still love it, and how skinny it gets. I did get a jack plate for it and that made a big diff on the trolling motor. I have the 50 and it goes 26-28 with four people and 2 dogs. By myself it will go about 33-34. It’s not that good a joyriding though and kinda rough as expected in decent chop. If you are looking to go where you would kayak then it’s definitely awesome for that. If you are looking to pleasure boat and fish I would suggest the flats they have. I think it’s a 19’ as far as fishing shallow and the sand bar trip every now and then I’m happy with ours.
I have a 2019 outback and I’m trying to decide if I want to upgrade to the 360. I fish a lot of lakes and I need to maneuver around a lot of trees and stuff easily. I also want to be able to stand more and I feel crazy unstable in my outback.
I felt pretty stable in my outback but in the pro angler it’s a whole new experience. My outback had to be sent back for a crack otherwise I would have kept it. On the other hand I wouldn’t have known how great the pro angler was for how I fish. It’s hard to say one way or another but if I had to do it again and had the money I would say I would have picked the pro angler since I have had both now.
