I'm a Wedding and Portrait Photographer based in Denver, CO.
My Video content is from my experience around Wedding Photography and other Portrait work. I hope you find my videos benificial to what you are looking for.
Thanks. Grids are just to help direct the light more precisely on your subject. If I was starting from scratch, I would just practice with one light and get comfortable with getting the exposure right and the settings dialed in. When I started out, I practiced in my apartment on my partner, objects in the house, self portraits, etc. I have other videos with just one light too.
It all depends. I set my ambient light in camera first and highlighting what I want to see (hanging lights, background). Then I will add the flash to the scene. If I want it more dark and dramatic I will darken the ambient light in camera and then add the flash and so on.
If I only have an on-camera speed light and want to light my subject, I personally like using the magsphere (like in the video). Point it straight up and click the speed light one notch towards the subject. And for portraits or vertical images, I do the same. Turn the speed light pointing up and give it a subtle shift towards the subject. This all depends on the location as well. White walls or ceiling to bounce off, nothing to bounce off, etc. Just depends. I personally try to avoid pointing the flash directly at, because it produces a flat light on the person.
I do use other large modifiers for other portrait shoots. Most recent one I use often is the 42" MagMod Octa Box. For a wedding day, I have found that simpler is best for me. I rarely will use a large modifier. I really haven't had the need for anything stronger then the ad200. With the MagRing I can double up the ad200's so that seems to work well when I am in those "high noon" sun situations.
Thanks for the inspiration. It's nice to see exactly how you've placed the lights. That's quite a tall light stand. Can I ask you what kind of light stand it is?
Gotta use that lens hood. Saw a lot of lens flare on the outside shots and not in the good way. Also, since you've got the magmod stuff, that hairspray shot would look cool with a blue gel or something like it over the ad200.
I'm using direct flash using magmod sphere and it works for me better than holding an umbrella while shooting the camera one handedly in outdoor scenario.
