Its because they was no train coming from the opposite direction. The 2 trains had not yet entered the local durban region where they will find durban metro trains hence for time efficiency, both trains were made to go on both tracks
A pity that rail services through Kwa-Zulu Natal were very brief. I've been on the old "Trans Orange" service from Durban to Cape Town via Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, & Kimberley TWICE since August 2000. A daytime service leaving Durban early morning to view the Midlands around Pietermaritzburg to Mooi River then further on to see distant Drakensberg Mountains to the west up to Ladysmith before afternoon sun would be a good feature of rail travel in South Africa. Properly promoted it could benefit all South Africans & get travellers of the dangerous highways & toll routes where speed kills many. I wish the decision-makers dealing with development of transport infrastructure would consider this for the future.
