The rings said the air was polluted by bacteria, so nuclear holocaust has occurred but it emphasized bacteriological warfare in the narration. it also mentions factories which produce oxygen.
Great video Joel. I was living near Toronto, when PofG was running ( not sure if they'd have got it in Thunder Bay). As I was in my late teens/early 20s I was too shallow, interested in girls and beer - which took me away from my love of sci fi ( although I was still reading comics on the sly). What a brilliant show, it is a digital museum that captured the thoughts and ideas of a generation of geniuses - like Kirby, Moore and Gaiman ( I read Miracleman religiously in the 80s). The Kirby interview is a historically significant digital artifact, that preserves some of the great man's thoughts before his dementia stole them. Cheers, and well done.
Very good review. I think the movie still holds up after all these years. "Tragedy of your times my young friends, is that you may get exactly what you want". Brilliant line.
I know that according to the story of the film, character of Buck didn't kill anyone, but his dumb, violent, pretentious wannabe rebel disposition reminds me of Charlie Starkweather.
Couldn't of been said any better have to so agree same can. Be said for books. Put to film so many good books that could be out to anime or films an they keep doing the same dull. Re run dribble
This is one of my favorite films ever, even with it's shortcomings. I was 19 when I watch it in 1979 and experienced for the first time a movie Overture which thankfully was included in the 33-1/3 rpm Soundtrack Album. I did purchase the DVD when it came out and many years later the Blu-ray, which had a limited release for Disney Movie Club members only and some of them were being sold in Amazon. This movie deserves a remake for all audiences.
Baron Munchausen was on the Amazing Race, sat upon a cannonball, he greeted the racers with the host Phil Keoghan, and although Phil doesn't call him Munchausen, he does call him the Baron of lies, and describes The Scene where the Baron rides The Mortar Shell on the way there and a cannonball on the way back. And as everyone knows Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam made up a third of The Monty Python Troupe. there was also John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, and Graham Chapman. Robin Williams was uncredited, I know I looked, But I knew it was him.
Wow! This was outstanding! Very well done and infomative. Thanks so much for letting me know about it. Really raises my appreciation for his ideas and writing.
One of my favorite childhood memories was watching this movie when it came on television about once a year, it scared the crap out of me every time. I also developed a mad crush on Alma, what a beauty.
I saw this several times at various theaters, downtown at its introduction, the neighborhood theater, and the drive-in. A top-flight cast, big budget, and great story. When I recently rewatched it. I was disappointed at the slow scenes of the Nautilus moving across the frame, which now come across as filler. The early scenes of the Nautilus in attack mode are still exciting.
I LOVED THIS MOVIE AND LOVED EVEN MORE DON USED SO MANY OF THE ACTORS FROM THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW. SO MANY CHARACTER ACTORS LIKE DICK SARGENT, RITA SHAW, CHARLES LANE AND OTHERS MADE THIS A CLASSIC. WARNER BROTHERS DID DON'S FIRST MOVIE THE INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET THEN DID NOT SIGN HIM TO A CONTRACT SO UNIVERSAL PICTURES GRABBED HIM AND ALONG WITH THIS ONE AND THE RELUCTANT ASTRONAUT CREATED CLASSIC PICTURES.
You guys have got to do more reviews, please. From this to your TMP video, I have loved it all and every so often check to see if you brilliant fellows have done anything new. All the love & respect guys! 🖖
Absolutely fantastic work here, guys. **clap clap clap** Loved the wealth of creativity on display; from your subject himself to your storytelling, craft and attention to detail.
Saw it first in the late 1960's as a Saturday matinee. I was 6 or 7 and totally blown away. Impressively, the film still holds up very well 50+ years later. All four of the principle actors are legends.
Saw it in theater at an Air Force Base in Japan - and they mixed up the reels so 1/3 of the way through it skipped to the last 3/3 section for about 10 minutes. With the intentional cuts back and forth in the film it took a few minutes to be sure it wasn't intentionally part of the film sequence! They fixed the reels and jumped back to 2/3 and advanced from there. Then it made sense- as much as it was going to. I loved it but rewatching today I see the flaws now. For me, the Robin Williams unleashed antics haven't aged as well.
In general, I think this review is spot on. I don’t think the control room sequences are a problem. I have seen the film many times and never felt those moments disrupt the rhythm of the story. And with regard to the development of Rebecca De Mornay character, I think that knowing less about her makes sense. We are following the story of these two men, and in the midst of that, she drops in and suddenly becomes part of their lives and eventually an equal player. We discover bits and pieces about her in the same way that they do.
