Adventures with an all wheel drive off road Mobility Scooter, 'The Turner Dragonfly' affectionally called Wood-E. Wood-E is a home made mobility scooter designed for both off road adventures and urban use. A total DIY mobility scooter project I designed and built Wood-E just for my own use. The main feature is Wood-E's all wheel drive from three 800w motors, a hub motor in each of the three wheels. I hope I can show the pleasure that can be enjoyed from mobility scooter ownership. Kind regards J J Turner
Scooter makers if they used light aluminium would cost them more and prob wouldn't get as many sales..so they use the easiest and the most cost effective way to build.
Your a braver man than me Joe. I prefer my scooters in one piece, not strewn across the workshop like yours. There again, Pride warned me several times not to make security modifications to my Colt as it would void the warranty. I told them I wouldn't need to if they designed the damn thing so dickheads wouldn't keep trying to knick it from outside Tescos when I go shopping. As it happens I have made a few security improvements. I've added a motorcycle security chain to the front through those 2 securing lugs at the bottom of the tiller so it's tethered to a steel pole where they keep the shopping trolleys. That will deter the thieving buggers. The chain is secured via a D Ring Shackle so I still have the warranty in place. btw, I've got a pair of button braces similar to yours. Nice video by the way. Michael.
Hi Joe , very enjoyable videos, bought a 4mph in January new , love being able to get about more, so hooked on the freedom have now bought a Flygo800 , marvellous freedom with more range.
You are an inspiration Joe, I have a scooter and have perchased a gopro I watched your videos with enjoyment. However what editing programme do you use I would love to have as professional videos as you. Please keep them coming. Best regards as ever Kem
Nothing special Ken, I use a laptop and Coral VideoStudio 2023. and just enjoy the fun of putting a vid together. I would say make sure you set your gopro to record at 60fps, regards Joe.
Sorry Steve, I love the stuff Markus-K knocks out, he's old hippy like me, and as an ex-biker my other love is heavy rock, but AC/DC and 9 inch nails is a bit of an a acquired taste. Kind regards Joe.
Welcome to the normal world 😂. I think the one you have is the same as my Father's one. It overheated going up a hill. Stability isn't awesome either as the width is too dinky. No good on anything other than pavement. It's taken some time but finally got the Mrs out on her Kymco midi-xls (2nd hand). We've got a Verso so with 2 of the rear seats down it fits the Kymco. We went up onto Plaster Down on Dartmoor with it and the suspension was so much better than her powerchair. Batteries didn't last long in the grass. 2x 45ah so I'm thinking they will need replacing.
Joe you are an inspiration, I have a scooter and have obtained a action camera. I intend to make videos for my enjoyment so I can look back on my rides when the weather limits me to being housebound again. What programme do you use to edit your trips I would love to be like you and make videos like yours. Unfortunately my council dose not upkeep the footpaths like your council the footpaths are overgrown and being close to Gatwick Airport the traffic is horrendous so the road is out of the question so the ability to get out and about is limited. Best regards Ken
Hello Ken. If your stuck for a video editor try the "One Shot Video Editor" its free and open source. Just Google it. There are loads of how-to videos to help you get started. It's easy to use, that's why I've got a copy. Although I have a GoPro 8 I haven't been out making films like Dave and Woody. I wanted to focus on securing my scooter and other models as security isn't high on the list of Pride and other scooter companies. All their interested is building them and selling them to me and you. Hope this helps. Michael.
I recently got veleco zt15. It's a bit hair raising until you're used to it but it gets me around okay and haven't tipped it on uneven ground yet. If I had the money it'd be great to go for something like this instead
Really hope you get sorted soon, me and Lylias enjoy your content and gives us the drive to keep on going. Thanks for the lovely update and get well soon Wood-e
Hi Michael, Wood-E is a unique, one off that I designed and built myself. I constructed the scooter within a foot print of 60 inches long by 28 inches wide. I have no objection to anyone wishing to copy the scooter and I would imagine that a 3 foot long adaption could be made with some thought, regards Joe
You are an inspiration Joe, I have a scooter and your channel gave me the push to do something similar I have squired a go pro and have been setting it up all I need to do now is work out how to put it onto you tube wish me luck. Best regards Ken
Nice ride out Joe. I noticed you passed Bilbo Baggin's house under that big tree on your right out there in Middle Earth. Should have tried the door to see if anyone was home. Do you have the GoPro on your chest? I've got a GoPro 8. I'll take some videos of Lincoln where I live. Michael.
Does your scooter have any security features built-in when you first got it? I have a Pride Colt Executive and there wasn't anything on it that could stop anyone stealing it. There are a few things on it now, like a motorcycle clutch lock on the tiller and a £50 motorcycle security chain & padlock. That should slow them down a touch. Michael.
I debated purchasing the midi xls, but decided to purchase the Kymco Agility purely because it has a slightly bigger motor (600w). Really happy with my Kymco scooter. By the way, I'm interested to know where Jim got the walking stick holder from, do you know?
this is Andrew spoke to you before, i initially bought a vita e from tga but that didn't work out so after watching your glowing video again i decided to buy the next size up Kymco Maxi, ill let you know how it goes. btw how many miles did jim get out of the midi on a full charge?
Those barriers are a nightmare, even for your bikes these days, because handlebars are wider and that poor guy trying to help you did the whiskey throttle. I shouldn't have that trouble, but it's not right they should give people people using mobility scooters a special key or something to give us Access So we are not discriminated could you get Quick release handlebars so you can turn them around
When my father was a live, he was a club singer we new lots of tv actors and people who came from clubs like Charlie williams ken Dod Jeremy Beadle, most of the corrie cast even dad was on corrie a few time because he worked For granada studios And emmerdale he was in reta, sue and Bob too we ended up drinking With chubby brown one night then when dad Retired he bought a guest house Right on the corner of blackpool, pleasure beach I could look up and see the big dipper from my garden the Stories I could tell you. His name was Claude powell
A lot of people don't understand about torque watts and volts but then you'll need a good controller to push all those volts and amps through it i might add another 20amh battery to mine and change the controller to a 1000 watts i have a mid-drive motor on 3 of my bikes and that bike eats hills for breakfast
I know, it is quite complicated but I don't think its to worry to much about. Amps and volts are about power available, and gearing is about torque delivering the power ....... Joe.
There isn't many people doing what you do exploring on a electric scooter and making videos but i exploring i do the same on my electric bikes but it will be loads better on my scooter but as your can see im still loving your videos Joe where are you going next 😊
Joe i don't understand why they don't make all acceseways disabled friendly, the questions we should be asking our government is why we don't count in society we should have the same access as everyone else, thanks again joe for the quick video 👍 very informative be safe my friend👍😎
My scooter in 21 and a half inches wide and 38 inch and a half long and goes 25 miles on the lowest setting and 12 mph so I can put it in my car boot with out Further the damage to my back and bonus plus get around small places easily do you know I've walked around town for ages except a few times on my electric bike but I'm finding hard to get my leg over the seat even when my seat is low but I new what I was looking for with the size of the battery and wotts volts and amps hours I'm looking forward to Receiving my scooter it will be like riding a legal go-kart the stuff of dreams Joe, in the mean time I'm watching your videos they Inspire me my friend O I love ride it's like a 4×4 it looks so comfortable and it's the only one in the world like that you lucky man 👍🏾
Thank you, it started out as a burnt out small scoot. But I got carried away, its called Wood-E because its made out of an old book shelf. Regards Joe.
@joeturner4woode that must be great to build it to your own specs and comfort. I wish I saw yours before I bought mine. I would have put more thought into it, but mine can fit into my SUV
