I don’t know but it seems a bit odd that even after so many years those papers are still buried in Windsor castle… if he was all that why not show the papers?

"Mistress"? At 08:20 mins, Wallis Simpson is described as the mistress of the newly proclaimed King? Why? When does a mere "girlfriend" become a "mistress"? This young man was single, playing the field, and had girlfriends like most young, single men do, and he later married a girlfriend, as most young men do. In an otherwise excellent doco, the script here prejudges & darkens the woman by labelling her his"mistress", although I've never heard this term used before for the particular female friends of a young, unmarried man. I've myself been happily married for 40 years, but no-one ever referred to my girlfriends before I got married at 23 years as my "mistresses". 😂
She was rather long in the tooth to be called a girl friend, which by the way was not much used in the post Victorian era. And in context Wallis satisfies the more common use of mistress as a kept woman, i.e. pay for play.
I watched this live. I was still awake and was staying with my Mum to care for her, after she had her hip replaced. My Mum was still awake in bed. I then told her what had happened. I was glad I was there with her. so she wasn't alone when she got the news.

the really puzzling thing about all this was winston churchill's support edward/ duke of windsor. if edward/duke of windsor was so pro-nazi why did churchill want edward/duke of windsor to be king?
Two minutes in and a major error. Edward's father and mother did not become King and Queen of England in 1910. The English monarchy ceased to exist more than two hundred years prior to George V's accession to the throne. George V's title (at the time of his accession) was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland. He held other titles including King of the realms of the Empire, but nowhere in that list of titles was the title King of England. The English monarchy was abolished when the Acts of Union were enacted on the 1st of May 1707. On that date England ceased to exist as a sovereign nation and was replaced by the new single realm of the Kingdom of Great Britain.
John Julius Norwich (I think) said in a similar documentary said that Wallis deserved a statue on the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square because she saved the nation from Edward at a time when we needed the best as our head of state
Excellent documentary. Even though the film quality is low. Truly Wallace changed the world. Several single factors could have changed WW2. The Royal Navies dominance. Winston Churchill. The loss of all personal at Dunkirk. The British radar system. Spitfires and Hurricans. The English channel. American lend lease. And having a Nazi King Edward as King of England. Edward should have been hung as a traitor.
The duke of windsor was a king and the way his choosen wife was treated was horrible. Even in death she got no HRH title lol. I think William or even Charles should fix this outrage. For his beloved uncle
Edward should of just married and had kids. Being king is what he was born to do. To do it for a women who can not have kids and is as scandious is such a bad joke.
A recent book and documentary covers similar topics to this. Documents have now become available that back up Edward’s Nazi links. He clearly wasn’t just a sympathiser, as some would argue he was. He was an active supporter who would have sold his own country to the highest Nazi bidder. It has even been established that Edward would have seen his own brother murdered just to reclaim the throne and make Wallis his Queen, which he thought Hitler would do for him. Edward was a fool and a traitor. Wallis didn’t steal a King, as history suggests. She took away a weak, pathetic man who was prepared to destroy his own country. The woman has been vilified by history, and there’s no doubt in my mind that they were as bad as each other in many ways, but Wallis sacrificed her life and happiness for a weak fool. Far from being vilified, she deserved a medal.
People aimply must stop using the description of trains running on time for facism. Really. It does not take a hitler to do that . Edward coudl have beocme one of the worts things to hit this wolrd in this millenia if he d been allowd ot hold the riens . Thank GOD for Churchill
I was 13 and asleep in bed when this broadcast aired. The next morning my mum entered my room around 7:30am to wake me up for school and she said, "Listen Jarred, a lot of people are dead over in America but everything's okay here in Australia." Then I got up, made breakfast, turned the TV on that's when I first saw it. At school that day, all our regular classes were cancelled so we could watch the news coverage. Sandra Sully gave a masterclass in journalistic professionalism and composure here; RIP to all who died on that infamous day.

From the short retrospective video, Channel 10 does have a higher quality broadcast archive. I don't believe they would have any incentive to release the full recording though.
