Correction: this was directed by Jonathan Miller. Colin Lowrey was production designer.

This is nothing new, merely a product of its time. How do you think the original play was performed? Whilst I don’t really condone it and it simply wouldn’t be done today, it’s also worth noting that it’s not a malicious portrayal. The same can be said of Laurence Olivier (although his makeup is exaggerated to a laughable extent unfortunately) and Orson Welles (an outspoken anti-racist in his day) in their performances of Othello. I would argue that it’s less blackface (as in the disgusting and morally reprehensible minstrel shows) as it is merely dark makeup. Hopkins is playing Othello, not lampooning him, and race is inherently linked to the character and his internal conflict, therefore on goes the makeup. What you make of it is up to you as the individual, you are free to disagree of course, and it is a complex issue. I love these productions regardless, you just have to take into account that they were made in a different era, but also that these particular portrayals were meant sincerely and not to cause offence and spread hate in the same way one of those disgraceful minstrel shows would do.

So disturbing to see Iago laugh at Othello’s suicide.

True but I think that's what makes his charather more unhinged and sadistic people think he should be upset but in relaity he succeed at everything he wanting to do so to his end he's delighted

I'd really like to see how Nicolas Cage would handle a classical tragic role.

non of you realise that this is the closest adaptation to the actual Play, if you have actually studied it in depth you would understand the technical depth Lowery had to go to in order to achieve this... Maybe watch and read and compare before making comments that do not coincide with his efforts...

He hits her because of a few hints that she might be unfaithful, and then murders her after a few more hints. I don't feel any sympathy for him, his speech falls on cold ears. It's Emilia and Desdemona I actually care about in this play. Everyone else, including Othello, can suck it.

Yeah, and it's the soldier's way out. As a soldier for the period there's only two honorable ways to die: in battle, or by what's called "falling on your sword" in this ritual suicide attempt. If Othello were to be taken to Venice, he'd be tried and given an un-honrable death for a soldier. So really, by taking his own life and by giving this transcendent monologue, Othello is our tragic hero, and that's the beginning of how Iago loses, because through this death Othello becomes a hero.

"I kiss thee ere I killed thee, no way but this - Killing myself to die upon a kiss" I had to analyse as much as I could in Othello in some of my course - I almost didn't want to in this line. It's better felt than put into words.
