TLDR for someone like me who is looking for a live link workflow: He just created part of a texture in Photoshop and imported to Substance. There is no live link workflow. (And Adobe owns both)
Hey, I have a question. First, thanks for this tuto, but I'd want to know if we can add different color to a grouped object. Because I do a lego project for my school, and I grouped a whole building to make it easier to use in my scene. But a question is in my mind since I finished it, can I add different colors to it ? (it's fused not just grouped). Have a good day, I hope you'll see my comment
Yes you can. To do it properly you need to UV map the model. Once it UVed (Laid flat) you can bring it into Photoshop or Substance Painter and paint it as many colors as you want. The other way that is easier but not correct is - select individual faces and apply a color to it. Do that as much as needed.
When i go to try to file/set/project and then file/open it is not opening my last saved copy- is that b/c it is in 'incremental scenes' and not just sitting under 'scenes' folder itself? if so, how do i get it back to the right place?
I never use incremental saves. Instead I manually increment save by doing Save AS. That way I know its saving properly and saving in the right spot. To answer your question, it looks like you have to create a project folder, then set the project folder. After setting a project folder, your incremental saves should be in the scenes folder of your project folder. If you simply create a new project folder, without the additional steps of setting the project folder the incremental saves wont save in the correct location.
Here is what I would suggest 1) You need to be a paid customer for the desktop version 2) You need to be logged into the ipad version with your same paid account log in 3) Your desktop and ipad need to be on same WIFI 4) You need ZBrush 2025 installed on your desktop 5) In ZBrush 2025 you need "discoverable" turned on in the GOZ preferences 6) You need to GoZ on iPad and you should see your computer.
I have that problem showing in Orca Slicer when I try to slice some objects. I have ignored some times and I can't really see any problems when is done. On the other hand, I have click "repair" and it goes fine. My point is, do I really need to do repair? Since your video is showing the issue during modeling, I am not a modeler, it looks like a different scenario than mine since I can't actually see what the problem is. I guess I would have to really look closer?
I you can complete the task and do see a problem I would not repair it and leave it alone. Sometime it has to do with the UV map (prepping for textures) and if you don't need that I would not worry about it.
When using ZBrush on the iPad, Can you export OBJs onto Google drive or save an obj file onto your iPad?? Can you only transfer/export projects and 3D files to the desktop?
Yes you can. Go to the export button (at top left) / 3d model (under goz button) / obj / export ( choose google drive or anywhere else you would like to save)
I cannot get zbrush 2023 to work, it's a god damn disaster. It is SO BAD that even with win defender realtime prtec disabled and drivers/bios up to date it does nothing. It even freezes whene xporting the base model. I'M RAGING, I'M RAGING SO MUCH AT MAXON.
@@davidbittorf no, i just can't go to maxon and do my stuff because I'm broke as shi. Another problem I met with ZBrush is that when I make it export tangent normals it exports object normals. Which to be honest would be good to coat beetles but I'm doing a cicada right now and cicadas look like bark. I have to re sculpt the fine details again. End it, Father.
@@davidbittorf I use Blender for modeling and sculpting whenever I'm modeling, and use Maya for UV editing and rendering (had to clean install windows two months ago because discord filled up the C drive, it was a basic Kingston 128 SATA ssd so now I got my stuff from shady thangs and could install everything except for Maya because Animales service executable would kick in and stop Autodesk installer even despite I'm using a keygen (license gen). I know this is too much information, but I'm a student that recently graduated with four master degrees and I'm fighting hard to make my demo reel because I got the green light by a nationally known art director to send them the reel (is sekrit though), but I don't have very high hopes either
@@davidbittorf i do use Blender, but my workflow is: modeling in Blender, UV in Maya, sculpting in Blender (or ZBrush if it is too much for Blender), bake maps in Substance designer or ZBrush, paint in Substance painter, rig in Blender or Maya, make Alembic and render in either Blender or Maya. The project I'm doing now requires a lot of details so I use ZBrush.
@@davidbittorf It says "This scene contains at least one transform node with multiple shape nodes. The plug-in will export only one of the shape nodes. The name(s) of transform node(s): |bulletSolver1" and the fbx is just empty, i already baked the simulation frames
@@NegaMogekoo I would recommend downloading my exact file davidbittorf.com/p/maya-dynamaics-series-files-577145 and see if you can successfully export it. If so, you know there is something wrong with your scene. Next I would compare the outliner to see what differences there are and go from there.
If you're using an external monitor, this app doesn't support any keyboard shortcuts to zoom in and out, and the rotate option is not good. And it's a paid app for very basic functions.
That is true. If you are using an external monitor and keyboard it seems like you are getting away from the "comfort" of using the iPad in the first place. Yes, the screen is small but I absolutely love this app.
@@davidbittorf I have recently found a way to rotate/zoom in and out of the canvas using a mouse and keyboard, somewhere in the accessibility settings. I use the Ipad to draw and use another monitor for reference images,
hmmm.. I have the lite version and relax is working just fine. Are you holding the button down the same time you are using the pen to smooth over an area? Make sure the topology is messy when you are trying it. If it is clean to begin with it will be tough to tell if its working properly.
@@davidbittorf Oh. Thank you for the reply. It worked after changing how the Pencil selects things in Cozy Blanket. I found an Apple Pencil setting. There's 3 of them. I chose Pencil select. I think, and the bar became available. I have a Mini 6.
Thank you! 🙏 as far as your question: If you mean proportionally, I don’t think so. If you mean always the same value you could go into bevel settings, make the adjustments, then every time you use bevel it will apply the same value.
@@davidbittorf yes, I figured it out! it is in bevel settings >offset as fraction and >offset (for everybody with same problem, if you do not have this as options, just put them in with clicking on the three lines in right up corner of bevel window).
I know this is a bit old, but the simplest way that I've found to transfer files from PC to my iPad is actually VLC media player. It comes with a local file transfer section on the app. You open a web browser on desktop, enter the IP address provided by VLC, then drag and drop. Its super easy and LIGHTNING fast. Transfers multi-gig files in seconds. (Gotta have a fast router though)
Great comparisons, I like this series. I'm learning Maya now but very comfortable in Blender. A few crucial hotkeys in Blender I think are worth mentioning: When transforming (G/R/S), you can also type a number to get precise increments. For example to rotate 90 degrees on the X-axis, it's R > X > 90. You don't necessarily need to use the numpad a lot. While orbiting the camera, you can then hold Alt and it'll snap to orthographic view. I find this is the quickest and most intuitive way because you don't have to worry about where the left/right, front/back of your model is. Just begin rotating to the angle you want to view from then hold Alt and it'll snap. You also don't need to press any hotkeys or menu buttons to come out of Orthographic view. It will automatically switch to Perspective if your orbit the camera again. I recommend rebinding the numpad period - Frame Selected hotkey to something super accessible like Mouse Button 4. This is my setup for navigation on a keyboard without a numpad and without using the emulate numpad setting. Because the number row hotkeys are also super important. 1=vertex select, 2=edge select, 3=face select. I do like the emulate 3 button mouse setting because it decreases the frequency that you need to click the MMB. Personally it's more comfortable to Alt+Left Click drag to orbit than to MMB all the time. Another huge thing that other software doesn't seem to always have, is holding Shift while dragging things to get finer control. This works on any value slider, gizmo, and works for transforming anything in any workspace. Holding Ctrl will snap in increments. Again, it works for any value slider or any transforming operation/gizmo. And holding both Ctrl+Shift, will snap to smaller increments, works everywhere as well. Super nice. I totally agree that Maya is slightly more intuitive but ultimately slower and a bit clunky (But I'm still working on seeing if that's simply a skill issue or not). And Blender is a bit harder to learn but ultimately, once the hotkeys are muscle memory, it's very nice and quick. The hotkey system is very well designed and consistent across workspaces. For example going into the Node Editors those same 'navigation' hotkeys work. Holding Shift, Ctrl, or Shift+Ctrl. You can move/scale nodes in X or Y directions and type numbers to move specific distances. And all the same hotkeys work in the Graph Editor too for moving/rotating/scaling points.
Wow! Thank you for the tips! This is the most epic comment on my entire channel! Thank you so much - you are a rockstar! I’ll make sure to try your tips out. The more I use blender the more I prefer it over Maya - for modeling that is. If you ever have questions regarding Maya let me know. I’m always happy to help!
Your influence zone is too big. If you are using Blender you need to middle mouse wheel down or if you are using Maya you B and middle mouse to the left.
You can paint on the uvs in Zbrush. If you “morph uv” the model it will show the uvs. Then you can paint on it. If you have access to substance I would use that instead for more control.
@@davidbittorf i have displacement textures from texturexyz that im trying to paint on my model...my problem with substance is that you cant warp/liquify the projection while projection painting, which you can do with zbrush's spotlight. i think polypainting it in a heavily subdivided mesh then writing it to the UV will be the best option...it would be nice to paint directly to the UV map though
🤔 I do hear what you are saying. Not sure if this would help but have you ever tried bringing in a high resolution mesh into substance so you don’t need to fiddle around with the displacement
Thank you for your tutorial! Very helpful! (Recently started to understand and learn about AI.) Really wonderful to see how Firefly/Photoshop and Midjourney can work well together. Thank you again!
Ugh that bums me out. Really want to switch to Blender and having it all in one would be amazing. Maya topology is just more intuitive. Would love to leave it behind. Seems like Blender can do everything now, animating, rigging, modeling, texturing, UV unwrapping. Would be so nice if it could do better topology than what's available.
There is more than one way to do it blender. In fact if you are willing to to invest a little I’m sure retopflow would blow Maya out of the water. I haven’t tried it yet but looks promising. Let me know if you try it out. blendermarket.com/products/retopoflow
