I read the Tao of Physics in my teens and have been fascinated by the connections between philosophy and physics most of my life. I am a pure mathematician with a philosophical bent and after working in IT most of my life, I'm finally getting back to thinking about the foundations of mathematics, the philosophy of science and the nature of the reality underlying physics. Thank you for this great interview! It was really interesting to get to know the man behind this book that has inspired me for decades.

Dude is literally big brother.....you can't make crime zero without micromanaging every action and every thought of an individual. The fact I have seen 1000s of these cameras going up, seemingly overnight, tells a lot about how little local governments care about citizens rights. All they see is revenue. "Those who would trade liberty for false promises of security deserve neither and will have neither."

This is one of the most dangerous companies in existence because it is networked to almost 100,000 cameras today and their use is unregulated.

This is not about crime. This is an attack on privacy. Garrett is the guy that created the camera that took away our freedom. Now the cops are tracking you daily. So they can control our lives more a communist society. I would like to sue this guy for stealing our privacy. we’re under attack by surveillance. Created by this company. Now I can’t leave my house Good job bro. three times. I’ve had cops follow me from the bar. I have a feeling it Hass to do with this new license plate reading system. good thing I wasn’t drinking. This company is an attack on the citizens.!!

Aaron should really read "Deidre Goulash - The case against punishment". That "if people were 100% sure they would go to jail for stealing a bike, no one would steal a bike" is deeply confused. He is projecting his own frame of mind onto the species.

Calling Democratic NIMBYs Republicans is not really that correct. NIMBYs are excessively for control by voting The likes of Bernie Sanders support NIMBY because no longer supporting communist dictatorship he wants everything companies and how gets what voted on Democraticly and the Demos don't want no section 8 people nor more traffic. BTW even renters tend to be NIMBY. BTW If building is allowed they generally end up not hating it at all.

Immigration is a loss for the countries the immigrants come from. We want educated people to contribute to our economies, but who will contribute to the economies of poorer countries if their best educated people move to Europe?

These guys who say progress didn’t exist before the Industrial Revolution are using an economist’s metric of progress. Real incomes weren’t always a great indication of wealth as not all exchange was done through currency. There was plenty of progress in a variety of things even through the dark age. We started to have much more progress following the invention of the printing press as information could be mass produced and delivered cheaply.

Yo. Marshall no one looks at these comments so I wanna suggest you eventually address your history with Israeli propaganda. I believe those in the industry say 'getting ahead of it.' Like you could have a guest on in something related to international relations and kinda segway into 'I did accept a job which included astroturfing something' you know on your own terms. If you've already done this somewhere than my bad.

Building a safe environment is more important, Natural disasters are real and people do not truly understand the mineral deposits underground including natural gas development that can cause explosions, there are also more potential hazards. People usually wait for accidents to happen allegedly before they make changes When construction sites excavate minerals under the ground they find massive rocks etc that they may not even understand existed.

Immigration is just a bandaid. You can't raid other people's populations forever. The solution is a from the roots revolution because the problem is spiritual not material. Our poorest people are obese, we are awash in material abundance and we aren't breeding. Neoliberalism saps higher purpose and identity and fills those voids with pursuit of Capital (purpose) and then choosing how and what to consume with that Capital (identity). It doesn't work. We aren't happy and you can't technocrat your way out of this.

what makes the nordic model work is the agreement that basic benefits are not up for debate, and it doesn't matter if we are talking about denmark, norway or sweden. between all ideologies, 90% of us agree that society must function in this way, while there are extremes on both sides who either want more or less of our welfare system. We also live for our holidays in Denmark, I have 6-8 weeks of holiday a year, including my time off for overtime, but I take the last three weeks as days off during the year. with a Friday off, a Monday an extended weekend Wednesday Thursday Friday, and + public holidays, it's like the old song with, huey lewis and the news workin for a livin. I work for a living and not the other way around, and it is completely allowed in the Nordic culture, yes, Norwegians, Swedes and Danes will all see it as completely normal, In fact, none of us have a minimum wage trade unions are strong in the Nordic countries, indeed so strong that they have helped to shape our countries. and culture. in Denmark, peasant culture is actually quite altruistic. with colleges, where back in 1880-1930 there was a lot of talk about henry george. I have personally gone from being a socialist to being pure Georgist, towards being geoliberitaian slightly anarchist with a clear georgian root. my personal ideal society is "the small state, with the big heart," and what does this mean, after all, a society with as little administration and bureaucracy as technically possible, the state must be small but strong, an unconditional basic income, for all of us , but based on the profit that the land rent gives to society. and senorage from the creation of money, which must no longer lie in private hands but must be state income as it is an infrastructure, this is the core of the lile state with the big heart, with a state-funded health system of course, and based on a Swiss idea of direct democracy, In our current model of society, we have not reaped the value of the technological advancements, there is a rather good book in Danish called psudo work, which describes quite like David Grabe's book. bullshit jobs. that much of the work we have in our current society is real bullshit, we have especially around the big cities created a whole rentseeking bullshit work economy which creates much of the land rent we see being created, with the demographic problems we will have in the future we will not have the resources to run this economy, while if we go the opposite way, yes, we will actually be able to have more freedom, and create more value in society through the small state with the big heart, which is basically described in Henry George's progress and poverty as a basic idea I have no problem with creating solutions for families with children, but I don't see it as a natural law that everyone has to live in a big city, Demography will determine our future, to a greater extent than climate change, and the solution is Georgism,

I have to say, I found Emad's answer to the alignment question laughable. It's pretty clear that his idea of "misalignment" is that AI will exhibit racism or sexism or one of the other isms. That is not the concern. The concern is that advanced AI will kill everyone in pursuit of some nice-sounding objective like "give everyone a great education". The question of whether you have enough data from a variety of cultures is basically irrelevant in comparison. The fact that people building the most advanced AI in the world don't even seem this is a problem, let alone have an idea of how to solve it should be setting off alarm bells in the heads of anyone who cares about being alive in 30 years. We're probably going to create AGI in the 15 years, and if we don't have a foolproof alignment strategy integrated into that first model, we are truly fucked. Even if we have a foolproof alignment strategy in place, the world is going to be so utterly transformed by AGI that it will be basically unrecognizable. AGI is going to concentrate power to a degree we've never seen before. Its creators will use it to make themselves brilliant far beyond any humans and practically immortal. If you don't believe this, show me the law of physics that says it's impossible. We sure as hell better hope that the first creators are the most kind, benevolent people we've ever seen, or else the rest of us will be irrelevant at best or dead at worst.
