Greetings! My name is Daniel and welcome to my LAIR! Actually, nah, this is my RU-vid Channel. I started in late 2010 making Sparta Remixes and YTPMVs till I got bored of them sometime in 2014. In mid 2015, I started to make ranting videos on Devs in the TS Community, before being inspired by Stuart K Reilly and adopting the TS News Show, a weekly podcast show in which many Train Simulator related things are discussed about and opinions are shared. You can check out the TS News playlist on the playlist tab. Episode 3 is where the standard format begins. Thanks and have a good day!
I feel like this has to be said: STOP TRANSPENNINE FROM OPERATING LEEDS-MANCHESTER STOPPERS. Northern are local operators and should be taking care of those routes and not TPE. That’s how you get more 185s to run as 6-cars. And also at this point just order more 802s if the DfT are gonna be bastards to TPE
When I took one of these from Edinburgh to Birmingham, the little dot board just said 'Milton Keynes' over and over. Everything was going great until the screen in the train blue screened. I thought the train had errored for a moment! Everything was all good, we just had no clue where we were. (The announcements were broken btw) good trains tho! I also exclusively hunt 390119 so make of that what you will
Nice video. I honestly wish that some of these 185s gave their middle carriages to one another to make four car sets, and provide eight car sets when running in doubles. It may make them not fit some stations, but I have heard of the voyagers (particularly the 221s) do that, and two 221 driving cabs and two central coaches were merged to make 221144* to ease congestion on the Manchester to Bournemouth service. *I don’t know if that’s the name. I think so? Anyways, nice one Dan. Thanks for making this. ❤❤
TPE are currently looking for 51 new units from questions ive asked theres not much info on them but they are saying they are definitely not replacing the 185 not sure if this is public info yet 🤔 also the 185s were supposed to be 4 car but they couldn’t due to the weight and also platform lengths (as in coupling them up would result in them not fitting on many stations)
Yeah I can't disagree with one thing in this one. The 185 refurbs were such a scary moment because I was worried they'd be ruined. Nope, best interior in the UK right now
Dewsbury (not) represent! Why? You could have substituted Beirut for it! The 185 are your classic upper mid-table unit - not brilliant, but comfy and reasonably reliable.
When i was in Sweden then i was at a station called Kävlinge and i think it is a great trainspotting the station has 5 platfroms 4 in use platforn 2 is not used for passenger trains normaly only in heavy traffic and it has nomal amount of stoping trains and passing express trains and a super express form Malmö to Göteborg and some fright trains from Malmö passing it is a good place to trainspot Hope it helped
Every 185 coupled up would be 3.6km long. Longer than the Humber Bridge, but still shorter than the average freight train in the U.S. or Canada. I wish I was joking, but I'm not.
Sorry i didnt come back there was a family emergency, my cat was throwing up and I had to go to the vet/hospital so yeah I literally just got back 30 mins ago. Anyway happy birthday and lovely stream. ❤❤🎉
Excellent review - I actually agree with your assessment of it being a great train just scuppered by the overcrowding caused by being placed on busy routes with insufficient train lengths. I used to ride them regularly - awful during standard commuting hours but at other times when not rammed full they were nice to ride on. I loved your jokes btw, especially the "bisexual operation in the case of the 802" at 3:38. You gained a new follower - I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos!
Happy birthday Daniel ! And thank you once again for your marvelous and funny train reviews. We,all your subscribers, are thankful for your effort and hope a great continuation to this beautiful series! ❤🎉🚄
@MaverickHunterDaniel Gotta love a 185, the sound they make is awsome and i think they look rather smart :) Also Happy Birthday man!!! Hope you had a great day 🎉
2:23 I can confirm that the 197s get absolutely crammed, was riding one on a Saturday afternoon and the crowds of people onboard were very trying. The seats are absolutely disgusting, some of the only train seats I've used where I was desperate to get off! Surprisingly the vast majority actually seems to think those seats are quite comfy, and are more padded than the examples on the IET, but from my point of view, the Chapman seats I had on the 150 back were luxurious in comparison! That's unless you are lucky enough to get a 3-car one that has a "standard plus" section on a service where it's declassified, where the seats are probably the best I've used in a modern train (and they recline), big tables with reading lights, seats aligned with the windows and 2+1 seating, whereas in standard class, not even the information provision and excellent soundproofing are a good enough tradeoff for those seats.
The current plan for the 185s appears to be to add another micro fleet that will go the way of the Nova 3s, because god forbid any lessons be learned.... Well, also god forbid the DFT not being bean counters and letting more 802s be ordered....
The current outstanding, yet-to-be-awarded tender is for 29 units; that’s larger than both the Nova 1 and Nova 2 fleets, not much less than both combined even. That’s hardly a micro fleet. It’s not clear what if any trains they will be replacing; in any case I find it unlikely they would be able to fully replace the 185 fleet.
It should've been refurbished the second EMR got their diesel covered hands on it. If it's refurbishment is to the same spec as the 350/1, /3 and /4 and they add another toilet onboard just like the other 350s, then I'll take it seriously. In the meantime...
@@compaq416 Once again, this is the presentation style of the unicum style reviews to use the (intentionally bad) TTS voice. It would be like asking me to make a milkshake but with no milk or glass to put it in.
@@MaverickHunterDaniel I think the TTS voice if half the fun of the video, it does a not bad try at being a professional voice over but adds to the humour
Quick note about the acceleration: I’ve been told that what’s listed on Wikipedia is indeed the maximum acceleration rate of the 185, but only on eco mode. As you said, they are a bunch of brisk bastards, mainly from the fact that they’ve been blessed with speed hacks. I don’t think that there are actually any concrete numbers about the accel, but I can probably say with confidence that they can keep up with a sizeable amount of modern EMUs (if they’re absolutely sent to the shops, that is)
@@nowapproachingyt Ahhhh. Okay that makes way more sense. I completely forgot to rule out eco mode and it's affect on performance. Thanks for the clarification.
I love this review format so much, cracking video yet again! I love the 185s post their refirb. As you say, they're pretty much ideally spec'd out aside from their length. If anything, they're very much like a modern version of the super sprinters - great interior fit, let down by insufficient number of carriages
My favourite train 🥳 I remember seeing it for the first time as a young kid going to my first football match in its dynamic lines livery and it looked brilliant It's been my favourite train ever since I agree that the silly number of carriages leading to overcrowding is the one negative about it though but other than that I've always enjoyed these running in my local area
Great review! The 185's are pretty nice trains! Overcrowding can be an issue on their services especially out of Manchester on 3 car services! As someone who knows the Harrogate Line really well, the 170's do have slow acceleration between Burley Park and Horsforth. There is also single track between Knaresborough and Poppleton which causes delays sometimes.
