Join me for some hiking, backpacking, camping, and exploring the great outdoors on two feet.

Hi folks, welcome to my channel. I'm Paul, from the North Yorkshire Coast in the UK.

I love the outdoors; day hiking, backpacking, thru-hiking, exploring and wild camping. I've been hiking since 2011, when a trip to Utah opened my eyes to some spectacular scenery. Ever since then I've planned most of my holidays around hiking and camping in the great outdoors. For me there's nothing quite like the feeling of freedom when you walk off into the wilderness for a week with everything you need in your backpack.

The videos I post here will mostly be records of my trips, information on gear I use or have used, and possibly even some tips too. I hope you find at least a few of them useful!

Thanks for stopping by and happy trails!

I was wondering if you considered doing the alternative (nueva variante) which skips the descent to Banos de Panticosa (and subsequent ascent) which splits from the main route at Refugio de los Ibones de Bachimana? I am considering that alternative in planning my GR11 attempt next summer.

why they just cant make a shoes that will last? i used a pair of la sportiva tx hike just on west highland way and had to send them back. i have nike zoom trainers that i wear almost daily for 3 years and they still alive and look fine. maybe it s worth to have a look at nike hiking shoes. so many complain abt altras falling apart now.. i m looking at topo trailventure,but my size is 180 pounds all i can find. which is too steep for similar trainers.

I hiked with someone recently who was using La Sportiva shoes, but can't remember the model. The grip had worn pretty quickly and the uppers were also wearing. The Topo's I've been using have impressed me with their durability.
@vvs3796
@vvs3796 5 дней назад
@@PaulandaPack That model of la sportivas seem to have a good sole and it didn't have any wear on it after whw,so performed well.but glue started to come apart on other parts of the shoe also waterproofness was compromised somehow.. Btw these Nike trainers I mentioned survived a lot including 2 washing machine cycles. I still wear them n happy. Just now trying altra Olympus 5 mids and some shite digging into my ankle bone causing pain..let's see if it will go away after I wear them for sometime. I mean what about environmental footprint all these "high end" products cause. Too much inferior stuff these days for ridiculous money with lot of promises.

The new Pursuit 2 has the non-absorbent sole but is softer with tighter fabric that's supposed to dry more quickly. Maybe the Pursuit 2 is the new in-between for MTN Racer 3 and Traverse
@PaulandaPack
@PaulandaPack 5 дней назад
It's possible, although the Pursuit is zero drop, whereas the other two have a 5mm drop. I think that's the main difference.
@TelosBudo
@TelosBudo 6 дней назад
In Topo's RU-vid Video introducing the Traverse, they note that the waterproof non-absorbent sole is firmer, but helps the shoe dry more quickly. The added firmer section under the medial arch is likely also contributing to the firmness.

Yeah, I did buy some of the FKT insoles from the USA, and use them in the MTN Racer 3, they do perform better than the standard insoles.
@TelosBudo
@TelosBudo 5 дней назад
@PaulandaPack Oh that's something I didn't think of. I was sold on the MTN Racers 3 except for the poor drying factor, which is the main reason I am switching from traditional water-proof hikers
@TelosBudo
@TelosBudo 6 дней назад
Great vid. The Traverses are sold-out in Canada, at the moment. I like that the shoe dries faster than the MTN Racer 3 and I like the water resistant coating. I may go with the MTN Racer 3s given you find those more comfortable. But I will be doing rocky backcountry trails with heavy bags, so I don't know lol!
@PaulandaPack
@PaulandaPack 5 дней назад
It's a tough one, especially if you're unable to try them first. I'm not sure if there's a 30 day trial period in Canada or if it's just the USA. On rocky trails with heavy bags, you might benefit more from the rock plate and the support the Traverse offers.
@TelosBudo

I have the DR Li, I think it’s the ultimate tent. Not sure I could live with all that crinkling noise. Would be good to know if it’s settled down. I agree not much porch space. For me they are a 1 man tent. I noticed you had the DCF why did you go to this one? Any feedback?
@PaulandaPack
@PaulandaPack 5 дней назад
Hey! I'll be doing a review video soon, and giving a bit of feedback on my experience so far. The material is really noisy, especially in rain. I sold my DCF version a few years back - I didn't like the DCF floor - it punctured the first night out on a not very sharp root. I also got really paranoid about the carbon arch pole snapping in bad weather. Finally, the single wall wasn't really working for me here in the UK. I did have the clip in liner but found it a bit of a faff, and it made the interior a bit cosier space wise. So far, the noise from the material hasn't calmed down, but it's still relatively early days.

@PaulandaPack
@PaulandaPack 5 дней назад
Hey, good question. I'll try to answer it fully in the next review video. The space inside this is much better than the CS, but the CS went up easier for me. The CS, being silnylon, sagged and retained water a lot, making it heavier to carry when wet. The DRDWU doesn't do either, but the material is noisy, especially in rain. Overall, I prefer the Rainbow.

I have this tent in the Silpoly version and have been traveling the world with it for a year. It packs small and is very compressible once you take out the tent poles and stakes from the bag. Silpoly is a game changer with this tent as it makes it not sag at all. I have had it in a heavy downpour in a thunderstorm on the Lycian Way in Turkey and found it completely waterproof. I appreciated the low fly edge and the high solid fabric side walls to protect from splash back and wind. The next day it was soaked with condensation but it seems to dry fast enough in the sun and wind. I usually keep mine with the inner and outer connected for a faster pitch. What I hate about it is putting the pole through the sleeve when the inner and outer are connected. It seems to always get stuck on the velcro tabs in one position or another. I found out that the best way to set this up is to stake one side into the wind then put the pole in from the other side. The tension seems to relieve the issue but it is far from perfect. I am currently using it in the Pirin mountains in Bulgaria and have had it in some decent winds up to 30mph in fairly exposed alpine conditions. I stake it low as I can using large MSR stakes for the six primary points then add guide lines to the arch pole in a "V" on each side adding 4 additional Easton stakes in total. I then put my dirty socks on the tops of my trekking pole handles and extend the trekking poles to the apex on each door side under the vent. This gives the tent horizontal stability under wind load. I am a bit worried that it could wear the silpoly fly material over time. It seems like it is prone to holes and not a durable as silnylon from an abrasion standpoint. The tent flaps around in the wind especially when it is hit broad side against the door. The trekking pole trick make a huge difference. I think I may also get some fixed lines on the 4 additional guide out points along the fly in even more exposed conditions. I think this would help with more stability in winds. Im also not a huge fan of the "free standing" trekking pole set up. It works okay using the inner only and 140cm poles. The only time i used it like this was when I was drying out the tent with the fly attached to get more airflow and have a bug free area to eat lunch. I would never trust it like this in any real weather. My set up with a tyvek ground sheet, 10 stakes, guidelines and tent with bags is about 3.53lbs seam sealed. It is only about 12oz lighter than a full free standing option like the MSR Hubba Hubba without the groundsheet and I feel it might be worse in weather than that option. I would consider a Slingfin Portal 2 but I am a bit too tall for it at 6'2 with 13 US feet. The Portal 1p has the 88 inch length like the double rainbow but much smaller living space and no second vestibule. The Slingfin tents do look well built and made for real weather.
@PaulandaPack
@PaulandaPack 5 дней назад
Hey, thanks for posting your experiences with your tent. I totally agree about the pole catching when the inner and outer are connected, that's something I'm not keen on. Your sock trick with the trekking poles is a good one. I've not had winds above 15mph with mine yet, I do worry a bit about when wind hits those sides, good to hear that the pole trick works well. Safe travels!

I wanted something that I could take on shorter trips, in warm weather, when my X-Lite would have been overkill. I was going to buy a Z-Lite, until I saw they were £50. For something that I wouldn't use that often, I thought that was a bit daft, so looked for an alternative. I should probably do a follow up video to clarify things and say how I've found the pad now that I've used it.

I love the altras I wish they figured out how to have consistent sizing along the whole line of Altra sneakers. I wear a size up in the Olympus 5 vs the lone peak. I like the zero drop and wide toe box. The laces on the Olympus 5 are way too short to reach the back eyelets and are better in 54” (even 60” would be better). There’s not much heel cup so using all the eyelets locks in a foot better and not possible with the laces they come with. Vibram soles should be on all the Altras at the price they cost- lone peaks wear out too fast.. I had cascadia brooks goretex that were way too tight in the laces area- I can’t wear them/sold them.

Hi Paul, Thanks for the video, great info! I am a novice hiker, preparing to walk the Camino Frances in 5 weeks. I'm 58 F, fit, but totally new to distance walk/hiking. A week ago I bought a pair of Topo Ultraventure 3. So far I have put about 18 miles on them, i find them very comfortable climbing on a very rocky peak near me, but on the flat trail I can feel the arch (im accustomed to minimal shoe in the gym) and cushioning feels "mushy". I don't feel totally stable. Does the Traverse with less cushion have the same arch feel? I'm inclined to go down in cushion, but im afraid that 10 or so miles out I might regret it! So far 6 miles is most i walked in one day, all flat. Would the Mtn Rcr 3 be a better choice? Any advice would be appreciated. I want to stick with Topo. I tried the Lone Peak in the store and my toes were hitting the front and heel slipping out, even in the store. Thanks!
@PaulandaPack
@PaulandaPack 2 месяца назад
Hey there, thanks for watching! There's a lot to tackle here, so sorry for the long reply! To start with, all the Topo models I've tried tend to have a good deal of arch support, I've not tried any of their zero drop models (the Pursuit in particular is extremely popular) so can't speak for them but I'm guessing they'll be similar in that regard. Are you used to wearing zero drop shoes? (same stack height at the front and the heel, so your foot is totally flat in the shoe - Altra's in particular). If so, I'd say have a look at the Topo Pursuit or Pursuit 2 if available where you are. If you're not used to wearing zero drop, (example most 'normal' trainers are higher at the heel than the front of the foot), it might not be a good idea to switch to them before such a big walk - it generally takes time for your body to get used to using them (in most cases, although some people have zero problems). I'm not hugely familiar with the Camino Frances but I'm guessing that a high percentage of it is on pavement/road/hardpack trail? If so, I'd say avoid the Traverse and the MTN Racer 3. They're both trail shoes and have the same aggressive grip with big lugs which will wear down pretty quickly on hard terrain, roads etc. The Pursuit has a rock plate which you probably won't need, and is also quite firm and supportive. The MTN Racer 3 is a high cushion model, the highest Topo offer I believe, so you may not like the feeling of that if the Ultraventure felt squishy to you. I love the MTN Racer 3, but it's tread and lugs wouldn't last very long on roads and pavements, plus it may feel a little odd with the lugs being so big. I'd say maybe have a look at the MT-5, I've not tried it myself, but it's got a less aggressive tread, smaller lugs, (still Vibram for good grip), and I believe it's designed for more of a mix of light trail and hard surface. The cushioning is similar to that of the Traverse I believe. Bear in mind that mile after mile on hard surfaces, you will probably be glad of a bit of cushioning after you've done a few days! Failing that, I'd say check out Topo's road shoe offerings, though I can't offer any advice on them as I've never used any, sorry! Hope some of that helps, and hope you have a great trip!

@LoremIpsum1970 hey, my feet actually measure about a 10.5, but I go for an 11 in everything, and that usually works out. The Traverse I found to be a little tighter at the front, and I noticed that I was getting quite a lot of toe bump on downhills. I'd go for an 11.5 UK if I bought another pair of them.

@@PaulandaPack Many thanks for getting back. I have used the online shoe sizing site for Hoka, and they state UK11 Reg / US12. so will see how they go in a day or so. I have noticed looking at each manufacturer's size tables that they can vary by +/- half an EU size against UK/US. Topo state EU44 as UK9/US10 which is so wrong. Looking at the same Mango MTN Racer 3s UK11 which are available online. I might just take a chance on those.

any update on how waterproof it is? can it be dropped in a river?
@PaulandaPack
@PaulandaPack 2 месяца назад
Hi mate, it definitely can't be dropped in a river. It doesn't come seam sealed (unless that's an optional extra now) from SWD. I used mine without sealing it, and without a liner on the GR11 crossing Spain. One day it rained the entire day and the contents of the bag were all wet, not damp, but wet. I've since sealed the seams and also use a pack liner now. The Ultra fabric is also de-laminating in high use areas such as the roll top, so that has an impact too.

We have the same tent in the polyester fly version. We have only used it once on a very damp trip of 7 days, British Columbia, early April. It was tough for two people due to the amount of condensation and how close the inner wall is to the inside of the fly. The problem was less the width of the floor but the angle the that the corners rise to the top cross bar. There is not much room between the inner tent and the fly. So any contact against the mesh inner caused condensation to drip into the living area. We were a 3 person party so we switched tents after the first night and used the Rainbow as a single. The footprint was somewhat large for the size of the inner. This was a problem because we often only had limited camp sizes available. This surely contributed to the condensation problems because we were never in a position to pull the vestibules fully taut. Using the fly attached setup was difficult for us as well. Since we’ve returned I have slathered the pole sleeve with a very thinned out silicone. This added almost no weight but stiffens the entire sleeve so I can get past the Velcro connectors. So we seemed( at least in the home trials) to have got past that problem if we wanted to use that feature. That said, with the condensation we encountered, we will probably pitch inner first and keep inner and fly separate to dry things out. We also found the tent was better with the cross bar on the outside of the fly. We wrapped that little black cross bar with a bit of yellow reflective tape because it look like something that could disappear in the brush if dropped. The reason it is better outside the fly is, on the inside, the fly and tent are directly in contact with each other at the apex. That caused a drip spot for moisture to collect and drip. We have some practice to do with this tent. It is very light and compressible. After thoroughly seam sealing it inside and out it was very rainproof. But the condensation with two people, in that very wet climate was difficult because of the double wall construction. The seasons young so we will see and I’ll comment further with any solutions to problems we encounter. Thanks for posting. Cheers

Hey, thanks for posting your experience with your DR. Interesting to hear how you got on with it on your trip. I know what you mean about the side walls tapering in as they rise, that would definitely be a concern for me if I was with someone else in there on a regular basis. For me alone though, it's certainly no problem. I've not experienced any bad weather in it yet, just a little light rain. No condensation so far either, but I was thinking of doing the same as you and keeping the fly and inner separate when packing up. I like your idea about the pole sleeve, very inventive! And you're right about that small cross strut - I'm going to keep a close eye on that - if anything is going to get left behind after packing up, it's probably that!

One more thing I forgot to add. One solution we found for the slack inner panels is to pull up the excess mesh and clip it to the center pole sleeve. We used a large plastic paper clip so as not to damage the mesh or fabric. This seems to be working on a pitch at the park. It pulls the inner wall tighter and away from the fly. I’ll let you know if it works in reality. Look forward to hearing about your trip to the Alps. Just subscribed. Summer here in the Pacific Northwest is very dry this year. Not looking good for fires. Fingers are crossed on that.

Argh, my time in the PNW was wet, cold, rainy and snowy every day on the PCT. Tent never had chance to dry out. I've packed a couple of clothes pegs with the tent now. With my X-Mid, I could lie in the tent with the doors open and have a pretty much unobstructed view, but so far, I've found with the DR that the side wall/door gets in the way a bit when I'm laid down. The peg let's me just fix it out of the way a bit more. Not a deal breaker by any means. There's always stuff to figure out I guess, it's just a learning curve. Do you use a groundsheet with yours? I've just had one arrive from Tarptent.
@twhis9843
@twhis9843 2 месяца назад
We didn’t use a ground cloth. We just haven’t got around to making something. As far a the floor it was pretty tight. We had 1/2” thick closed foam on the floor with Nemo inflatables on those so there wasn’t any water under us from condensation. Yeah, the only real difficulty was the tight space inside with two people. I swear condensation goes up exponentially with the number of people.

@@twhis9843 I got one of the silnylon sheets from Tarptent, it's only just arrived in the post though. I've tried Tyvek in the past and it takes up much more room than I expected when folded. I've been using polycro recently, but both pieces I have are about shot, so I decided to go with the silnylon.

Nice job on the vid. I'm trying to decide whether to buy these or the MTN Racer 3. I've been wearing and enjoying the Altra Lone Peaks for the last few years, but the build quality seems to be going downhill. I bought a pair of the Topo Trailventure 2 boots for winter use. I really like them but they're a bit stiffer than I'm used to with the Altra. Do you think the MTN Racer are a bit more flexible than the Traverse?
@PaulandaPack
@PaulandaPack 2 месяца назад
Thanks! Having used some Lone Peaks myself, the MTN Racer 3 is much closer to them than the Traverse is. The Racer feels much more flexible, nimble, and offers much more ground feel than the Traverse. The Traverse is pretty far away from the Lone Peak - they're really quite supportive and offer little ground feel due to the rock plate in the forefoot. Hope this helps!

at 14:44 you can use the designated hole to avoid the crazy bend, the over the top method is when you pitch the tent with the fly attached i think

Urggghh, showing off again! 😂 I do really love this tent. Although they don't do a solid inner, it's nice that it has a solid section at the bottom to cut out some of the cold air. It's the perfect size for one person I think and so many nice little touches. So tempted to get one. Awesome detailed review matie. 👍
