I know this is an older video but my tbi 350 did the same thing but it also made the tac jump around. Only when cold never hot. But it turned out to be the pick up in the dizzy
I appreciate the reply! I changed that last year, as well as the ECM. I think the pickup is often to blame. I've pretty much shot the whole parts cannon at it now with no change. Apparently a sloppy timing chain can cause it, but I think I'll go LS before going any further now.
I believe Diesel and V8 is the best combination for a Motor with good low end Torque. I mean a V8 is known for torque. A Diesel is also known for Torque. V8 Diesel will always perfect for hauling stuff
My father had a 80 Chevy with the same joke engine 4 years later still didn't learn his lesson then he bought an Oldsmobile with the same joke engine, but after a few months later we had a miracle the car got stolen and the insurance replaced it by a newer car with a 305 in it
That is the best sound early GM diesel I have heard in a LONG time, and its a 5.7 Oldsmobile diesel?! That is nuts! And I bet that Jimmy was a nice cruiser with that diesel. Don't need to go fast, just need torque and putter around in comfort.
I have their tiny 8 snowaway, smallest in their commercial line and it is a fine performer, fell off ramps in ice storm from my Toyota and it just laughed, built like a tank , I also have two ariens , if one of those had fallen off , definitely something would of broke, simplicity would also chop chew ice and chuck it with its little 8 hp, fantastic easy to operate! I bought this 1 day before the big blizzard in 90’ in Connecticut, guy said he was sold out except for the tiny 8hp baby I took home, my wife said what the hell did you buy that for! Next day with 4-5 foot drifts, she watched from the door and said wow that’s really nice👌🏻I would definitely buy another
Looks and sounds beautiful. Curious why the 5.7 liter Oldsmobile duesel in a truck ? I can see it in a car but guven the power ir rather lack of power for a truck why this choice ? Dont get me wrong this is an epic swap .
It was swapped by the original owner back when it was new. Couldn't order it with a diesel, so he put one in it. I have since pulled and sold the engine. It was cool, but not modern enough for our needs. Also really stinky if the top is off.
@gregs_garage the 5.7 diesel was cool, but I need this to pass and maintain 80mph interstate speeds down south. That N/A diesel with TH350 was not the combo for the job.
Oldsmobile. GM's experimental division. Olds engineering with GM research were tasked with new stuff to come out with and test run on the car brand after having run through the proving grounds tests.
I had a 1/2 t0n jimmy with the 5.7 diesel . It was a old j.d. service any way I was the second owner (got it worth the money ha ha)had good luck with it for then the glow plugs went bad and the parts store wanted a hundred bucks each for them and I decided a can of starting fluid was a lot cheaper and when you got the looks when it was nintey -five outside lifting the hood and watching the people thinking i LOST MY MINDwas worth it .The rear main went out and was getting oil all over it and went and put a olds. gas engine in and run it three more years .Had to be a olds. engine in it because the starter wires are on the left and chevys were on the right.WHAT A GOOD TIME I HAD.HA HA
It was not factory. The original owner ordered this Jimmy in, and bought a brand new C20 diesel off the lot and swapped the drivelines. Wanted something nobody else had!
@@Geoff240ti how do you remove the chrome outside bezel? In some pictures on their website I can see four screws on the outside bezel. Any tips are greatly appreciated man!! Thank you
@T.A_Outdoors the grille was off a factory truck as far as I know. It was a salvage purchase. It's actually a 2018 Duramax front end on half ton. As for removing the bezels there were some screws, and then doubled sided tape held on a large portion of the front. Can't recall if there were clips as well.
We had an '81 Serra Classic w/ the Diesel, when it piles up, we bought a rolled truck out of the Oil industry and the local GM dealer swapped it over to gas.
I had a 82 impala wagon that came with a diesel 5.7L in high school, it excites the heck outa me seeing them in prime condition. Thanks for keeping an underrated historical piece of GM history on the road that nobody anymore really would know existed. I aim to source a few cheap rebuilders for experimental but good purposes, and put some more power into them. Could you offer any advice? Id love have one with more power in an 81-84 c10 custom deluxe LWB mated with a SM-465. Or 79-80 c10 with 81-7 front clip.
Very Nice !! I’ve never had that nice but I’ve owned 4 or 5 of the GM 5,7 diesel cars and worked on some for other people . I got along with all of mine really well ! I miss them . The sound and the smells were awesome !
Pretty cool video. I had two of those engines YEARS ago. 1981 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and a 1984 Olds 98 Regency, both with the 5.7. I've always loved the clatter of those engines. They just had a unique sound, compared to other diesels. I've driven 1980s Mercedes diesels for the past 27 years, and while they're superior by far, I still miss the sound of that Olds. Thanks for sharing!
The first shop I worked in when I was 16 we converted one of these trucks to a 455 olds because the owner blew a head gasket and kept driving the diesel which in turn overheated it and nuked the motor. We put a big cam and intake and carb on the 455 and used the diesel high flow manifolds.. can’t believe the condition of this truck. It’s beautiful
Thanks!! The 455 would definitely be night and day from the 5.7 diesel. It's soon to be LS3 powered, but appearance will remain stock other than wheels/stance.
I remember when that motor came out. One of Oldsmobile's goals was a short-stroke V8 diesel, something that hadn't been tried before. The prototypes would only run a short time before failing. Olds should have given up on having such a short stroke and instead based it in their big block with smaller bores. A long stroke 350.
Sold the boat.. the motor leg was actually not long enough for the boat so I couldn't plane out. At low speeds the 20hp was no problem, I think you could go heavier.
I can’t thank you enough for making this vid. Just wanted you to know that it has definitely helped an owner of an ‘84 to try & fix the same problem. Thank you sir. 🙏👍🏻👍🏻
The great thing about Alpharex is they offer a converter if your truck had factory led turn signals. Without it you will get hyper flash. I bought another company's headlights and I experienced hyper flash and they had no work around to fix it. Here is my 2018 Silverado with Alpharex headlights. I feel that they are worth the money. They make things hassle free and they are great to watch. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HPsccn1vmq8.html
They look great, but I feel at 12 hundred dollers u should get more, I'd rather go with the pro series and spend another 100 bucks on led bulbs, that's still only 600, half of these nova series, just my opinion, for 1200, they should come coler matched to grill!
I worked on a lot of these years ago. The Oldsmobile diesel engine program was another example of GM doing their R and D work with their customers money! They took the best/ most durable gasoline engine they have ever made, and turned it into a terrible diesel. By the time they finally got most of it's problems sorted out, they had so poisoned the market nobody in their right mind would buy a GM diesel of any kind. The people that bought vehicles with this engine, and paid a premium for them at the time, really got screwed when the time came to sell or trade them in.
That's pretty bad ass! I have always heard great things about Simplicity blowers. What I find really cool about your video is that the machine seems to throw a tight "stream" of snow rather than a finer "spray" of snow from the chute even though it has the ribbon augers. I have a Troy-Bilt Arctic Storm with the "closed-flight" augers, and it throws snow in the "stream" pattern. I have found that this helps reduce (not eliminate) the blowback when it's really windy. Anyway, thank you for the awesome vid!! :)
Thanks Paul! When I bought this machine it had some damage to the auger drive shaft and impeller. I bent things straight, and this was the first trial. I was quite happy, but coming back up the driveway it had some spray (not the stream like I had walking down). That is my only disappointment. I'm not sure if it's my machine or by nature. Sounds like your Troy-bilt had some nice engineering done to get it right from the start. I'll have to keep and eye out for one of those in action! Not sure why, but snowblowers always fascinate me.
One of the very few 2wd Jimmys/Blazers that I've ever seen. It's really surprising to see a 2wd where there's significant snow (Saskatchewan)!!! Was the 5.7 a factory option or was it originally a 6.2? I just watched a video the other day about a 1981 Buick Century with this engine.
