Hollywood missed the talent of Peter Cook ,he was the Benedict Cumberbatch of his time ,an ability to adapt to any character and voice , where as they chose Dudley ,some movies were great then not so ! Never mind ! Peter Cook as Sherlock Holmes or in an Agatha Christie movie for sure !
R.I.P Parky thank you for putting my hometown on the map (and Cudworth/Cudeth) love this interview, two people who are totally at ease with each other and their professions.
It's easy for those who only know Peter through "Derek and Clive" to completely under-estimate the wit and thoughtfulness of the man. Peter Cooke is not Clive. Clive is not Peter Cooke.

I happen to be guilty of loving Peter Cook. Who else would turn around the question (it did take him a while; I fault Dud, his ad libbing into a nonexistent glass stole some of Peter's genius from him but it was still at the least funny) of "Do you have sex before . . ?" A truly idiotic question, but one you can't get on TV without asking a guest, I guess, or why else am I on TV?
I so loved Beyond the Fringe and on the first day I finally managed to get to London, I went out to explore and miraculously came across two life-sized, mounted photographs of Pete and Dud outside of where they were appearing in "Behind the Fridge". I bought a ticket immediately, of course. I later saw the show again in the US where it was called "Good Evening" and they had added the wonderful, incredible, amazing Tarzan audition sketch. The last time I saw one in person was the sad occasion of the wake for Peter at the Director's Guild in L.A. We were told that Dudley would be there but he was very late and not in good condition. We assumed he was drunk which was totally understandable since he had lost his partner but it became obvious that something else was going on when he could not recollect any story about Peter. In retrospect, it was a symptom of the brain disease that killed him. I am so glad that I got to see them even though the last experience was so sad.
This is the one where Parkinson says, “ And now, if you ‘d care to show me your greatest triumph ? “ I.e Goodbyee, and Dudley Moore gets up and starts to take down his trousers. I might have that wrong, but it’s all a long time ago
