I remember reading in your interview years ago that you were a fan of,or listening to,Shubert and Schumann. Can you recommend any great pieces of theirs? Thank you for sharing hope you are well God loves you deeply shalom 🤗🐼♥️✝️💐 Philippians 4:8
God bless Jeff Berlin ! The absolute most important reason at the age of 20, that I attend B.I.T at Musicians Institute in 1986/87. I was in the only class of 40 bass players that had the profound privilege of studying under Jeff, throughout the first half of our year in the original M.I. building, and the second half of our year in the present facility it exists in now. That exceptional year in my musical life was the best decision I could have made In my most formative time as a music student. And now at 58 years old, I continue to strive to maintain the principles that I was taught by Jeff with my students. Much love, respect and admiration for the great Jeff Berlin !
Bravo Maestro❗❤✊👍 It may be just me, but a couple things in there sounded reminiscent of Stephane' Grappelli which would totally make sense considering .....
Thank you for sharing! Surprised to hear the metronome (just kidding). Very sweet playing, nice piece. Recently picked up your Lumpy Jazz cd. It is so good. Would like to have you play here in Greenville, South Carolina Thanks for the video.
Playing, "out" so-called, is a matter of context. RU-vid music instruction videos are 99.9% of the time entirely based in conventional music with a commerce aesthetic. Where are the videos showing musicians playing non-tempered scales in free time? Players who excel in extemporized music featuring non-tempered scales in free time are world class players of the highest caliber: Veryan Weston, Lol Coxhill, John Butcher, Cecil Taylor, Barry Guy, Mette Rasmussen, Keith Tippet, Fred Frith, John Zorn, Mark Sanders, John Edwards, Okkyung Lee... I've observed far too many conventionally educated musicians who froze and completely clammed up when they found themselves in a context of music without bar lines or tempered scales. Playing "outside harmony" requires a knowledge and skill set not often found in conventional, codified music circles, and an entirely different kind of listening is required, for both performers and audients. There is no "inside/outside" dichotomy, only dogmatic attitudes and closed minds.
Great to see you here, always something to be gleaned(swiped) from your process! Really surprised you haven't popped up in my feed before today, but I'm subscribed now and will check it all out! Thanks for all your valuable insights.
I admit I like a little of both inside and out. We just have to be mindful of where we resolve and hopefully, it's in the upper register or else it's not effective. jmho
Nice lesson Jeff. I agree that getting too "out" is worse on bass because it clashes against foundation of the chord's root, which is why I tend to play very diatonically. You can't go wrong! Then again, it's nice to be able to "go out a bit" now and then and you do that beautifully.
